LEADERSHIP TEAM REPORT

From the Principal
I would like to start this week by congratulating our students for their great return to school. Getting around the classes, it is wonderful to see the industrious work going on. We have already seen a lot of year 2 and 4 students coming down to proudly show their work to Mrs Seed and I.
Last week we held our leader's induction parade. It was a lovely celebration of the students and their families. Congratulations to our year 6 students who received their badges. I look forward to presenting more leadership badges as the year continues.
I would also like to acknowledge our P&C. Already we are seeing the rewards of how hard the P&C work to support the school. You will have noticed the greatly reduced price of swimming, with the P&C funding all buses this year. This is a saving to our families of $750 a week for the duration of swimming. We estimate with sw3imming, camps and excursions this support to our families will exceed $20,000 this year.
Over the last few weeks, we have been looking at the safety of our pickup zones in the afternoons. In particular the Stop and Go Zone in the carpark near prep. Please see the information below if you are using that area.
STOP GO ZONE
Students who are leaving the school via the prep gate to meet parents in the Stop and Go Zone will be expected to do the following:
Wait at the black school gate until they see their parent. Once they have seen their parent and the car is stopped, they can go to the car. Please discuss this with you children. Class teachers will also be reminding children of the procedure.
Please be aware the Stop-Go Zone is a pick-up and drop-off area where parking is not allowed. It is a place where you can pick up and drop your children in a fast and safe way.

Reading at JHSS
Learning to read is a process that needs step-by-step teaching and plenty of practise at school and at home. Unlike walking or talking, reading is not a skill that we learn naturally — everyone needs to be taught how to read.
Reading requires two very important skills:
- decoding (reading) the words on the page
- making meaning from the words, sentences and paragraphs that are read.
For children to learn how to decode words, they need to understand how sounds and letters link together. They are taught that: - words can be broken up into sounds (the word ‘cat’ is made up of 3 sounds: c-a-t) and that sounds can be blended to form words (the sounds c-a-t blended, forms the word ‘cat’)
- the sounds in words can be represented by letters or groups of letters.
To support implementation of the updated Australian Curriculum, the Department of Education in collaboration with P&Cs Queensland provided an online reading session for parents and carers to support reading at home.
A recording of the Twilight Reading Session for Parents and Carers is now available for school use, along with a supporting fridge poster.

Kind Regards,
James Watt - Principal

NAPLAN QUESTIONS
Have a go at answering these NAPLAN Questions. Drop off your answers to the office (put in the Gold Box) to go in the draw for a prize.

NAPLAN
Year 3 & 5 students will be participating in The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is a literacy and numeracy assessment that students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 sit each year. It is the only national assessment all Australian students have the opportunity to undertake.
As students’ progress through their school years, it is important to check how well they are learning the essential skills of reading, writing and numeracy.
NAPLAN assesses the literacy and numeracy skills that students are learning through the school curriculum and allows parents/carers to see how their child is progressing against national proficiency standards.
NAPLAN is just one aspect of a school’s assessment and reporting process. It does not replace ongoing assessments made by teachers about student performance, but it can provide teachers with additional information about students’ educational progress.
NAPLAN also provides schools, education authorities and governments with information about how education programs are working and whether young Australians are achieving important educational outcomes in literacy and numeracy.
Further information
Visit ACARA’s For parents and carers webpage for further information, including how student results are reported.
