LEADERSHIP TEAM REPORT

WELCOME BACK
We would like to welcome back all of our students, families and staff to Term 2. With only 3 days in the first week, the children settled in well and participated in ANZAC Day Services and the Junior Cross Country.
CROSS COUNTRY
Before the holiday we ran the Senior Cross Country and last week we ran the Junior Cross Country. Congratulations to all participants who braved the wet weather conditions and wet ground to run for their house. The whole school scores for the houses was very close with RADFORD – 199 points, MCPAUL – 176 points and DORAN – 175 points. With Sports Day on the 27 June, it looks like it will be a very close contest.
ANZAC DAY SERVICES
Jones Hill SS commemorated ANZAC Day by attending services and showing our respect and remembering the Australians who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. The year 6 students attended the ANZAC Service in Brisbane, at ANZAC Square. Mr Watt and Mrs Seed attended the Dawn Service with our School Captains and a group of Jones Hill students. This was at the new Memorial Flame, in Memorial Park and was a very moving service. A large group of students joined us for the ANZAC March in Mary St. We wore our uniforms, relative’s medals and showed our respect with pride.
2025 REPORT CARD CHANGES
This year the Report Cards will change with different Achievement Ratings for Prep – 2 and for Year 3-10. Below is a table that shows the Achievement Ratings, Effort and Behaviour Ratings for all year levels. Your child’s Semester 1, 2025 Report Card will reflect these changes

ACARA NAPLAN TRIAL – TESTING QUESTIONS
Jones Hill SS has been selected by the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) to participate in this year’s Item Trial. The purpose of the Item Trial is to evaluate potential NAPLAN test questions (‘items’) for use in future NAPLAN tests. ACARA appreciates the participation of your child in the Item Trial.
Your child’s involvement and the results from the trial will help ACARA ensure that NAPLAN tests are valid, reliable and fair for all students. About the Item Trial • The Item Trial is being held in approximately 400 schools across Australia between Monday 19 May and Friday 13 June 2025.
- Schools are carefully selected to ensure that a range of student backgrounds and abilities is represented.
- The Item Trial is about testing the questions, not about testing your child or their ability. Your child’s results are not reported.
- Your child will sit two Item Trial tests. These will be, for example, a Reading and a Numeracy test, a Reading and a Conventions of language (spelling, grammar and punctuation) test, or two Writing tests. • The tests will be administered at the school by external invigilators. As the tests are online, your child will use the device that they use for everyday classroom activities, such as a computer, a laptop or a tablet.
- All selected students are expected to participate in the Item Trial unless they have been exempted or withdrawn from NAPLAN tests. If you have questions about your child’s participation, please raise these with your school.
Further information about NAPLAN is available at www.nap.edu.au

SENIOR CHOIR PERFORMANCE
We are very pleased to have our Senior Choir performing at parade in week 3, Friday May 9. They have been practicing very hard, and we know it will be a beautiful performance.
VOLLEYBALL
Congratulations to all our volleyball students on a successful start to our competition this week. We had a record 14 enthusiastic students sign up for the weekly competition to be held at Gympie State High School. We were the largest group of students from any of the schools, and therefore, have been given permission to create a 2nd team. This means we will have two teams of 7 next week, which will also allow optimal court time for our students.
CCC were short of players and asked if some of our students could help them. Hayden, William, Emerson and Kristian graciously accepted to play for them. Despite playing for another school, these students represented our school with pride and helped their team secure a two-set win.
Whilst our Jones Hill team didn't come away winning their game, we certainly demonstrated the best team spirit and improved greatly from the first set to the 2nd set, closing the gap from 14-44 to 20-34 against Victory College. This week, Cooper led the team as Captain, successfully playing off for the first serve of the match. Our player of the match went to Carter. He served well, attempted to get to each ball that came his way and was impressively seen diving for the balls, despite not yet having knee pads. All students demonstrated tremendous teamwork and gave it their all. Many staff from schools across Gympie and committee members of the Gympie Volleyball Association commented on how lovely it was to hear our students encouraging and supporting each other. The cheers were loud as we celebrated our wins, no matter how great or small, and that made Mrs Elson so proud!

FROM THE BUSINESS MANAGER
Hi Everyone,
PACER
The Parliament and Civics Education Rebate (PACER) is an initiative of the Australian Government that provides some financial assistance for students in Years 4-12 across our country to travel to Canberra, our capital.
Under PACER, pupils who learn about civics and citizenship in the classroom see their knowledge brought to life when they experience our capital first-hand.
Taking the knowledge gained in the classroom and seeing it in person gives our children an understanding of our democracy and how our nation got there historically. This year our students will be immersed in learning opportunities at Parliament House, the National Electoral Education Centre, the Museum of Australian Democracy, the Australian War Memorial, National Gallery of Australia, and National Capital Exhibition Centre plus many more venues during their Canberra trip.
Students being exposed to democracy ensures that young Australians are actively informed about our nation’s government and our country’s past, present, and future.

LITTLE KIDS DAY OUT

P&C NEWS

WE NEED YOUR HELP, JONES HILL FAMILIES!
At our recent P&C AGM, we were unable to fill the role of Fundraising Coordinator — which puts some of our favourite events at risk for 2025, including:
- Mother’s Day & Father’s Day Stalls
- School Discos
- Christmas Concert BBQ
- Raffles and more!
These events help raise around $20,000 each year for projects that benefit every student. Thanks to last year’s efforts, the P&C is covering all school bus trips in 2025, easing the cost of excursions and swimming for families
Instead of a single coordinator, we’re now forming a Fundraising Committee to help share the load — and we need YOU! A letter has been sent home with your child with more information.
No need to attend every P&C meeting
Kids welcome at meetings
You’ll be supported by an amazing team of volunteers!
Without a coordinator or committee, these events won’t happen in 2025. Let’s come together to keep them going for our kids!
Interested?
Email Gina or Louise at: pandcsecretary@jonehillss.eq.edu.au or let the school office know and they will pass your details on.

NATIONAL FAMILY READING MONTH

NATIONAL FAMILY READING MONTH is an initiative that represents the heart of our business— literacy being the key to learning and achievement. We believe that all children, with the help of their families and reading role models, can benefit from a lifelong love of reading.
This year marks the 29th Scholastic’s National Family Reading Month (NFRM), which encourages families to read together on a regular basis to create strong reading habits. Most of us know how important reading together is and its long-term value to our children’s success in school and in life. However, we also know it is not always that easy to put into practice with our busy schedules and increasing competition with screen time.
That is why we ask you to take the 31-Day Challenge— to inspire you to make reading together for at least 10 minutes every day a focus, to create positive, long-lasting reading habits and lifelong readers!
NFRM will launch on, THURSDAY 1ST OF MAY 2025, AT 11AM AEST AND 1PM NZST where it will be livestreamed all across Australia and New Zealand via Facebook and YouTube. Mr Luke will read his book Guess What We Are Doing Today? together with illustrator Chris Kennett and kick off the 31-Day Challenge, as we
READ EVERY DAY! READ MORE IN MAY!
You are invited to go to our website to download more assets and join the 31-Day Reading Challenge with us. Visit scholastic.com.au/nfrm for downloads, reading tips and exclusive content from Mr Luke.
Let’s encourage the 31-Day Reading Challenge and celebrate National Family Reading Month together!
