Leadership Team Report
Hi Everyone,
School Leaders
Well done to our impressive students who tried out for a role as a school leader. Everyone put a big effort into their speeches. Congratulations to our 2016 student leadership team.
School Captains: Charlotte K and Cooper R
Doran Captains: Flynn O and Taylah S
McPaul Captains: Declan J and Tashma A
Radford Captains: Kobe L and Grace P
The school and house captains along with our student leaders will play a vital role in helping students and staff during 2016.
Bomb Threat Hoaxes
As you may be aware there have been several Bomb Threat Hoaxes across the state recently. Last Thursday One Mile State School was the latest victim of this. Congratulations to the One Mile staff and students for the way they handled the situation. While our school has always demonstrated a smooth and effective evacuation process teachers will being ensuring students are prepared for such an event with a walk through this week on top of our scheduled drills.
Parking Safety
Nothing is more important than the safety of our students and no matter how much we educate our children in road safety, there will be times when children who seem to know all the road safety rules won't necessarily remember to follow them. So it is important to be very vigilant with road safety around the school. Please ensure you follow the signs on Heilbronn road when picking up and dropping off your children.
Recently we have had cars stopping in the no standing zone near the gate. This is a dangerous activity and it reduces the vision of students crossing the road and cars approaching the crossing. Your assistance in keeping our students safe is appreciated.
SWPBS
School Wide Positive Behaviour Support
(SWPBS)
Weekly Update
What does SWPBS look like at Jones Hill State School?
- Expectations for student behaviour: Safety, Learning, Respect and Relationships
- Effective behavioural support is implemented consistently
- Appropriate student behaviour is taught
- Positive behaviours are publicly acknowledged
- Problem behaviours have clear consequences
- Student behaviour is monitored and staff receive regular feedback
- Effective behavioural support strategies are designed to meet the needs of all students
The 4 expectations – Safety, Learning, Respect and Relationships are our key words. This ensures we have a common language across all year levels. We use posters in classrooms and signage around the school to make sure everyone is aware of our school expectations. Please take some time to discuss with your child/children what they know about the 4 expectations.
Each week we focus on one topic to teach the students about an appropriate behaviour.
Our focus for week 6 is: Learning in the Classroom
All classes will be involved in a lesson to teach this focus. All staff will be looking for students demonstrating the following:
- Be an active listener and follow instructions
- Try your best
- Follow adults directions
- Take pride in personal effort and achievement
Parents, teachers and students working together make a powerful team!
School Uniform
Wearing of school uniform has very many advantages to both pupils and teachers. It reduces peer pressure, raises school pride and assists in identification of our students on excursion. Uniforms also help create an identity for the school within the wider community. This year we will be reinforcing the need to wear the correct uniform at school every day and at any event that students may participate in outside of school hours. The following is an excerpt from the current school uniform policy. If you have any questions regarding the school uniform policy or any of the exceptions surrounding the wearing of our uniform, please contact the school office.
It is expected that the school uniform will be worn whenever our students are:
- Attending or representing the school
- Travelling to or from school
- Engaged in school activities outside of normal school hours
Benefits of having a uniform policy
- Ease of identification of our students
- Fostering a sense of belonging at Jones Hill State School
- Developing mutual respect amongst students by minimising visible evidence of economic or social differences.
Consequences for breach of the Uniform Policy include
- Discussion with students re Jones Hill SS Uniform Policy
- Verbal request to make necessary changes
- Detention in reflection room
- Contact with parent
- Withdrawal form relevant school activities
Playgroup
Playgroups are exciting and full of fun and Jones Hill School's Playgroup is no exception! It's not just the children who have a great time and learn new things, parents and carers also enjoy playgroup. Parents and carers get to make new friends, meet staff and learn more about child development and get great ideas for easy activities that can be done at home. Children will have the opportunity to sing, dance, do crafts and play with other children. In doing so, they will learn new skills including problem solving, co-operation and sharing, as well as making new friends.
Playgroup will start next Thursday, 25 February, from 9:00am to 11:00am. A gold coin donation will be collected per family for resources and tea, coffee.
It will be held on the ground level of I Block in the vacant classroom beside 1B (same room as last year). Please bring hats, water bottle and a fruit to share.
This year we have a teacher aide to help organise the morning. Can't wait to see you there!
Canberra Trip
Last Wednesday night, Pam Walsh, Manager of EducaTours of Australia, visited the school and spoke with parents, detailing for them the trip that the students will take in July to Canberra. Pam shared with the parents the many educational activities that the students would be undertaking. Parents and staff were very impressed with the level of learning experiences that will be available to the students and also the fun experiences such as the day in the snow. It is also interesting to note that the students will be visiting areas in Canberra that are off limits to the general public.
The staff attending the trip are; Helen Grogan (Deputy Principal), Stacey Seed, Rob Callaghan, David Walters and Tammy Pengelly.
The second payment installment was sent home on Friday. If you have any concerns at all, please contact the school office.
The fundraising chocolates are available to take home as well. Please remember that payment of $50 per box is required before you take the chocolates. The chocolates are available from the school office.
Old Furniture
The school has some old furniture to give away. Please see the photos in this newsletter. If you think that you would like some of the old furniture then please contact the school office on 5489 0555.
Photocopiers for Tender
We currently have two photocopiers for tender. If you are interested in placing a tender for one of the machines, please write your offer on a piece of paper, along with your details and place in a sealed envelope. Please write on the outside of the envelope "Tender for Photocopier" and hand the envelope to staff at the school office. Photos are attached of the photocopiers.
If you know of a charitable organisation that would benefit in receiving a photocopier, please have them contact us in person, via phone or via email – admin@jonehillss.eq.edu.au .

P&C News
FUNDRAISING NEWS TERM 1 2016
BULB FUNDRAISING
Last year the P&C Fundraising committee was able to raise just under $17,000 through a lot of hard work. This year fundraising will go towards new projects including air-conditioning classrooms and new furniture for classrooms. To start the fundraising off this year we are having a Bulb Drive. Today order forms for the bulbs were sent home. Please have orders and money back to the office by March 11. Orders will be handed out in the first week back of term 2, in plenty of time for Mother's Day.
Garden Express Fundraising provides every customer with free Growing Notes with their order. It outlines special requirements for all varieties, how deep to plant them, how far apart, when to plant them, when they flower, plus heaps more tips and ideas. It's all you need to have fantastic colour in your garden this Spring. Bulbs can look deceptively delicate, but they are surprisingly hardy and easy to grow.
EASTER RAFFLE
We are seeking donations for our annual Easter Raffle. If you are able to help us by donating eggs, bunnies or other Easter items please drop these to the office. Raffle tickets will be available from the school office next Monday February 29.
SCHOOL FETE PROPOSAL
There's nothing quite like the buzz of a school fete and the Jones Hill P&C is proposing a fete for October 2016. It would be a great experience for the children and the profits would go towards AIR CONDITIONING in the classrooms.
A fete will need a team of enthusiastic parents to make it all happen, so we'd like to make sure we have enough willing parents before committing to it. Do you love organising and planning events? Do you prefer helping out behind-the-scenes? Or maybe something in between? Now is your time to shine! We will need people for all types of roles - big and small. If you are interested in being part of the fete team, please come along to a meeting, at 3:10pm on Monday 29th February in the Library. If you are keen but cannot attend, please call or text Carmel Window on 0418 810 850 or Louise Younger on 0477 042 883.
UNIFORM SHOP
The uniform shop sale times for 2016 will be every Friday 8:00 am to 8:45 am. If you are unable to attend at these times, order forms and money may be placed in the P&C box in the school office. Orders will be filled on the Friday and uniforms delivered to your child's classroom. Please click on the uniform order form below.
