LEADERSHIP TEAM REPORT
Hi Everyone,
I hope you have survived the hot weather and storms without too many issues.
Recently there have been several parent friend requests to teacher's personal FaceBook accounts. Our department has a stringent ICT policy which includes staff FaceBook and mobile phones. Teachers are generally unable to accept parent requests and discuss aspects of schooling on FaceBook.
STUDENT RESOURCE SCHEME 2017
Thank you to all those parents who have returned their student resource participation forms. For those who have not, please return the form to the office tomorrow as stationery for the scheme needs to be ordered for the start of the new school year. Please make sure you return the form even if you are not participating.
Below is a summary of how the scheme works and a detailed form is attached to the bottom of this article.
- Payment of an annual levy. This payment can be paid in one of three options – one payment in full, three small instalments or Centrepay deductions
- All participating students will be issued with work books as required
- All stationery items will be provided as well as required replacements throughout the whole of the year
- Expensive items such as calculators and dictionaries will be available in class sets and will no longer have to be replaced each year
- Textbooks and all licences for Computer Programs (this includes Apps for iPads) and other class learning experiences are included in the levy.
We really appreciate the questions that we are being asked about our new look Student Resource Scheme. Following are the answers to the four most asked questions.
- Yes, parents will be able to cover their child's exercise books if they so wish. Books will be given to the students in the first week back at school.
- Participating students will be given stationery as required and are expected to be responsible for their own stationery. This means students will have their own ruler, sharpener, eraser, scissors and pencils etc. named, in their pencil case, in their desk. Some of the younger grades will use class sets of colouring pencils, crayons and glue.
- If you have a special item (like a nice pencil case or special set of colouring pencils), then your child is most welcome to use them. We do encourage that parents use only the pens, pencils and easers from the resource scheme as they are of better quality and will not fail like many novelty items. Used stationery listed is expected to be kept by students.
- Students who do not participate will be required to purchase all items on the booklist and will receive an invoice for reprographics and textbooks in early 2017 as per previous years.
STUDENT ABSENCES
Parents/Caregivers are advised that Jones Hill School will soon begin using mobile phone SMS text messages to notify parents of a student's unexplained absence.
From approximately 18/11/2016, parents will be informed by mobile phone SMS text message each time their child is away from school. The safety and wellbeing of students are the highest priorities for our school. Parents need to know if their child hasn't turned up for school, and schools need to know when and why a child is absent.
Parent/s will receive an SMS text message based on the mobile number that they have provided the school. It is very important that your details are up to date and correct in our OneSchool system so that you are able to be notified. Please call the office on 5489 0555 if you would like to update or check you details.
A SMS text message will be automatically sent to the mobile phones of parents explaining that our records show that your child is absent from school. The message will read as follows:
Jones Hill SS 14/11/2016 John
Black is absent from school today.
Please reply with a reason.
The message will arrive on the phone displaying the number, "0428 630 669 ". Parents should store this number in their mobile phone under "Jones Hill State School" so that when the message arrives, the parent is aware the message has come from the school. Parents can then reply using a SMS text, phone the school absence line 5489 0566 or enter details through QParent. For SMS text reply simply press the reply option on your mobile phone when you receive a message from the school and add your son or daughter's reason they are absent or late.
If your child is absent and a reason has been provided, then you will not receive an SMS.
The school expects parents/caregivers to contact the school in advance if they know their child is to be absent or late.
Please call the school office on 54890555 if you have questions regarding this process.
Fire Safety
During the year we have a number of evacuation and lock down drills to ensure everyone is aware of our emergency procedures and ensure the safety of all in a real emergency. Yesterday's drill included a visit from the Fire Brigade who congratulated the students about how well they conducted themselves during the drill. The station manager also spoke to the students on having a plan at home in case of a fire. The Queensland Fire webpage includes an online planning program for creating an evacuation map for home. Below are the details for accessing this sight.
http://www.qfes.qld.gov.au
Under the Community Safety tab click on Escape Plans then use the Online Escape Plan tool. If you are unable to print at home once you have made your plan, you could always copy it onto a piece of paper. Don't forget to look around the web site for other interesting fire facts and resources.
SENIOR SHIRTS
The process for ordering the senior shirts (Year 6 only) for 2017 has begun. Sizing shirts are now available in the office so please bring or send your student down to try on a shirt to identify what size will be required. An order form will soon follow with the cost of the shirt. Payment of the shirt must be returned with the order form.
Kind Regards,
James Watt and Helen Grogan

BOOK CLUB
BOOK CLUB gives parents and children a convenient way to purchase affordable, age-appropriate books to bridge the class-to-home reading connection and keep the reading momentum rolling in our school.
Issue 8 Catalogues were handed out to students last week, orders are DUE Wednesday, 16th November.
Our school earns 20% in Scholastic Rewards on all Book Club orders to help us obtain free books and additional learning resources.
LOOP enables parents to order and pay for your child's Book Club order, thus removing the paperwork and payment handling. Teachers still give out the catalogue and distribute the purchased books to the students, so the fun of Book Club is maintained.
