LEADERSHIP TEAM REPORT

Hi Everyone,

Last week I attended the biannual State Principal’s Conference at the Gold Coast along with the other 1238 State School Principal’s.

I must say this was an excellent conference and has reinforced the strong education improvement agenda we have for Jones Hill School.

The conference focused on strong leadership and high quality teachers working to help students achieve their potential.

Dr Jim Watterston, our Director General, set the scene around strong leadership building individual capability within our team.

One of the most inspirational presentations came from Corporal Mark Donaldson VC. Corporal Donaldson spoke about the valley in Afghanistan, where in September 2008 his display of extraordinary courage saw him awarded the Victoria Cross for Gallantry. He also articulated his story of life events leading to him joining the SAS and the types of leadership, knowledge, resilience and effective communication that are corner stones, not only in the military but life.

SPECIAL PARADE

Parade this Friday will be held at 10am and will include a special performance by the Queensland Police Pipes and Drums. ‘Kops-In Kilts’ will perform a free concert of traditional and modern Pipe Band music as well as children’s favourites such as Bob the Builder and Limbo Rock. A part of the performance will be interactive and some students may get the opportunity to be involved in providing additional percussion to music.

The Police Pipes and Drums wear traditional Highland dress and a member of the band will provide an explanation of the uniform and the reason behind its use. They will also explain the history and operation of the bagpipes and drums.

Parents are welcome to attend this parade which will also include the weekly student award presentations.

BANGERS AND MATHS NIGHT

Tickets for the Bangers and Maths night being held at the Gympie Civic Centre Wednesday March 8 are available from our school office until 12pm tomorrow. This is great opportunity for families to hear a positive message about mathematics education and to learn some great strategies and games to use at home. Jones Hill School will cover the cost of tickets for Jones Hill School families.

CANBERRA TRIP

From 24 June 2018 to 29 June 2018 Jones Hill School is planning a school excursion to Canberra. This excursion will be available to the students who are currently in year 4 and year 5. This excursion was first run in 2016 and was very successful with students coming away full of amazing memories and life-long impressions of Australia’s past and present. The itinerary for the trip has not been finalised yet but will follow closely to last year’s visit. This trip is highly educational as well as a lot of fun. The students will have the opportunity to develop an understanding of Australia’s origins, political history and layers of government with visits to Parliament House, the War Memorial and the Royal Australian Mint. There will also be a chance to visit the National Gallery of Australia, Questacon, enjoy a trip to the snow and the Sydney Opera House just to name a few.

In order to give parents the best opportunity to pay for this excursion we will begin payment plans as of Term 2, 2017. This will allow all families the chance to participate. It is hoped that parents and students will fundraise to help reduce the cost for all students. All payments will need to be finalised by the end of term 1, 2018.

An expression of interest will be sent home to the current year 4 and year 5 students this week. Please fill in this form and return to the school before Friday March 25. This is to gain an idea of how many students are interested in attending. A nonrefundable deposit will be required in term 2. This deposit is paid to the airline company and is nonrefundable to the school. The first parent/student information session will be held term 2 to discuss the proposed itinerary, payment plan options and answer any questions. Pam Walsh from EducaTours will visit the school at the end of this year or early next year.

If you have any questions at all regarding the Canberra Trip 2018, please don’t hesitate to contact us on 54890555 or admin@jonehillss.eq.edu.au.

Kind Regards,
James Watt and Helen Grogan

LEM PHONICS NEWS

LEM Phonics News

This week our rule is No. 6. The phonogram ‘a’ is usually used for the /ar/ sound when followed by two consonants. E.g. ask, last, fast. (Exceptions -words ending in ‘sh’ and ‘ch’) When students hear the /ar/ sound in words they will often spell the word exactly as it sounds e.g. larst. If we teach this rule we are helping children to spell words such as, after, ask and father. Can you think of 3 more words where this rule applies?

Next week our rule will be No. 7. The phonogram ‘a’ usually says its fourth sound when followed by ‘ll’ or ‘lk’ e.g. walk, talk, ball, fall. This rule helps us to see that we cannot spell the word ‘talk’ as tork or ‘small’ as smorl.

Here are some of the underlying principles of LEM Phonics.

  1. Every syllable needs a vowel
  2. Vowels and consonant sounds are different.
  3. The movement of the jaw indicates the number of syllables in a word.
  4. For spelling have your child always repeat the word aloud using their hand under their jaw to calculate the number of syllables in the word.

Expectations before and after school

2A discussed what before and after school looks like. Here are some of the responses from students.

  • Madelyn knows she is not to play on the playground but to wait near the gate for her mum.
  • Sienna knows not to go into the hall of an afternoon but to wait quietly for mum to pick her up.
  • Lucas checks to see if the classroom is open but if it’s not, he sits in the undercover area until the bell goes.
  • Harrison picks up rubbish in the undercover area before school.
  • Joel likes to play handball before school. He knows to bounce it and not throw it at people. He knows to be safe.
  • Emmett has learnt that he needs to be patient while waiting for mum to pick him up.

Disruptive Behaviour

2A discussed ways to minimise disruptions in classrooms. Picture below depict their suggestions.

Our P&C is a very active body of parents who work together as a team to enhance the learning outcomes of every child. Our volunteers are wonderful people who give their time, talents and energy freely and we recognise the important role they play, and the huge contribution they make to our school.

On Tuesday 14 March the school community would like to thank the members of the P&C with a BBQ but would like to take the opportunity to invite along all parents interested in how the P&C works and meet our friendly team of volunteers. The afternoon will start at 5:30pm with a BBQ at the school hall. There will be free face painting for the children. At 7pm there will be a normal P&C meeting. We recognise that volunteers are usually very busy people who juggle many different activities but we hope that you have time to come along and learn how your support can help make a difference in our school.
