LEADERSHIP TEAM REPORT

Hi Everyone,

KOPS IN KILTS

Staff, students and parents enjoyed a visit from the Queensland Police Pipes & Drums 'Kops-in-Kilts'. A range of songs were played, from traditional to children's favourites, Bob the Builder and the Mexican Hat Dance. A few lucky students performed with the band. If you missed this performance we have two small videos on our Facebook page for you to enjoy.

SENIOR SHIRTS

After much anticipation our year 6 senior shirts have arrived. Students were all smiles when they received them and looked most impressive in their new shirts. Thank you to Kelda Krafft for all the work you put in to organise the shirts.

2017 BANGERS & MATH NIGHT

Wednesday night, March 8, the Gympie Mathematics Alliance (Gympie West, Gympie Central, Gympie South, One Mile, Two Mile, Jones Hill, Chatsworth and James Nash and Gympie State High Schools) hosted our annual Bangers and Math evening at the Civic Centre. Over fifty members of the Jones Hill School community enjoyed this night and found it very informative.

Aimed at families it was attended by a record 302 people from the seven primary schools in the Alliance. Attendees enjoyed a fun family mathematics session filled with engaging games and positive messages about the importance of numeracy and how it is taught.

The session was presented by Rob Proffit-White, a renowned expert in the teaching of mathematics. Rob provided families with lots of helpful hints and tips to enable their children to feel comfortable and confident in using mathematics. His presentation also included information about how mathematics is taught and showed videos of how students think, solve and do mathematics. The session was followed by a free sausage sizzle and every family received a gift bag with counters, dice and games to play at home.

Research indicates that the level of parent and community interest in high quality education can have a direct impact on the achievement and aspirations of students. Thank you to all of the families who supported the event, it was great to see so many people interested in improving the long term numeracy outcomes of their children.

CANBERRA TRIP

From 24 June 2018 to 29 June 2018 Jones Hill School is planning a school excursion to Canberra. This excursion will be available to the students who are currently in year 4 and year 5. This excursion was first run in 2016 and was very successful with students coming away full of amazing memories and life-long impressions of Australia’s past and present. The itinerary for the trip has not been finalised yet but will follow closely to last year’s visit. This trip is highly educational as well as a lot of fun. The students will have the opportunity to develop an understanding of Australia’s origins, political history and layers of government with visits to Parliament House, the War Memorial and the Royal Australian Mint. There will also be a chance to visit the National Gallery of Australia, Questacon, enjoy a trip to the snow and the Sydney Opera House just to name a few.

In order to give parents the best opportunity to pay for this excursion we will begin payment plans as of Term 2, 2017. This will allow all families the chance to participate. It is hoped that parents and students will fundraise to help reduce the cost for all students. All payments will need to be finalised by the end of term 1, 2018.

Please return expression of interest notes that were sent home two weeks ago before Friday March 25.

Kind Regards,
James Watt and Helen Grogan

LEM PHONICS NEWS

Once again the LEM committee would like to say a very big thank you to the parents and carers who came along to our second LEM Phonics session on Friday the 10th. Thank you for taking the time to learn about spelling the LEM way!

This week and next week we are revising all of the rules covered in Term 1.

  1. Vowels usually say their second sounds at the end of a syllable. e.g. no
  2. Vowels usually say their second sounds if Silent Servant ‘e’ is present.
    e.g. note
  3. Usually use ‘c’ for the /k/ sound if followed by: ‘a’, ‘o’, ‘u’ or a consonant.
    e.g. cat•tle cot•ton cut•ler•y clean
  4. Usually use ‘k’ for the /k/ sound if followed by: ‘e’, ‘i’, ‘y’.
    e.g. ket•tle kit•ten Ky•lie
  5. Vowels usually make their first sound when followed by a consonant in the same syllable.
    e.g. cat
  6. The phongram ‘a’ is usually used for the /ar/ sound when followed by two consonants.
e.g. ask (Exceptions - words ending in ‘sh’ and ‘ch’)
  7. The phonogram ‘a’ usually says its fourth sound when followed by ‘ll’ or ‘lk’.
    e.g. walk tall

At Jones Hill, we are continuously developing and refining our spelling program. All teachers are involved in creating spelling lists that match words to rules and the phonograms and rules are introduced gradually and taught explicitly in all classrooms.

SWPBS

Our School Wide Positive Behaviour Sessions have focused on Learning in the classrooms and Respect and Relationships in the playground. In Prep M we have explored what a great learning environment looks like, sounds like and feels like to us. Our students created pictures to collect and share their ideas and decided that a great learning environment has the following qualities:

  • It looks like- Everyone busy learning.
  • It sounds like- Everyone having their turn to talk. Every person in our team has ideas that are important and are valued.
  • It feels like- Safe and happy. “I can do my best”.

For the values of Respect and Relationships in the playground we discussed and used role play to act out and practice:

  • ‘Being a kind friend.’
  • ‘Taking turns with others.’
  • ‘How I can ask to join a game.’
