LEADERSHIP TEAM REPORT
Hi Everyone,
Welcome back to the start of term 2!
Thank you for your patience and understanding around the unusual end to the term in the wake of Cyclone Debbie. Due to the nature of the unfolding weather events, information was shared as soon as it came to hand. As there was an overwhelming number of requests to send information out, the state-wide system was slow to respond on occasions. However, the right decisions were made from a regional perspective that placed state-wide student safety as a top priority.
Due to the closure of the school for the last two days of Term 1, the following activities have been rescheduled.
- Purple Day to support research into Epilepsy will now take place on Friday 28th. (Next Friday) Students can wear purple and bring a gold coin. Cakes and biscuits previously ordered will be given out during break time on this day.
- Due to Anzac Day and Easter Activities happening at parade this Friday there will be no awards presented. Students who were to receive awards at parade on the last day of last term will now receive their certificate next week, Friday 28 April.
- Easter Raffle and the Year 1 and 2 Easter concert will take place at 9.30am this Friday, following the Anzac Day parade which runs from 9.00am – 9.30am. Parents are welcome to attend all activities.
- On-line Tuckshop orders that were placed on these days can be delivered on an alternate day. If you placed an order on-line please contact Jo in the Tuckshop to discuss this.
ANZAC DAY SERVICE AND MARCH
JHSS will be attending both the ANZAC Dawn service and street March on Tuesday 25th April. Students will need to be in full school uniform, with a hat and water bottle. We welcome all students and parents to join us for the services.
- Student Leaders (students who are a member of the school leadership group) will receive an invitation to meet outside the Gympie RSL at 4.30 am, to take part in the Dawn Service. Other students and parents are welcome to join us at this early hour. The children march from the RSL to the Memorial Gates, where our School Captains will lay a wreath. Parents will pick their children up from the area near the memorial gates.
- ANZAC Day March: school staff and students are to meet on the Mary Street footpath between the 5 Ways Round-A-Bout and Smithfield Street at 10.00am until the veterans and vehicles come through. Not in Smithfield Street as in previous years, due to roadworks. The parade commences Mary Street from the Smithfield Street intersection at 10.30am and parents can collect their children immediately after the march in the Memorial Park between Reef Street and River Road. Parents are welcome to March with the school.
Below is a picture of some of the ANZAC day merchandise available from the School Office. We have a limited number of red poppies, purple poppies, stickers and tattoos. All items are 50cents each.

YEAR 6 SCIENCE EXCURSION
On a recent excursion to Brisbane the Year Sixes had the privilege of seeing some cutting edge robotics research at QUT. They visited the laboratories of Dr Matthew Dunbabin at the Gardens Point campus of QUT. Part of 6C and 6G science studies have been about the overpopulation of crown of thorns star fish (COTS) damaging the Great Barrier Reef. One of the solutions, scientists developed, to control COTS, is using a robot to scan for and inject them with a poison. This robot has been developed over the last ten years by researchers at QUT. Students also got to see other aquatic robots, agricultural robots, medical robots, and research into robot vision. I was very proud of the students conduct and the intelligence of their questions to Dr Dunbabin.
