SPRING FESTIVAL
To view our Spring Festival flyer please click on the link below for the program and list of what students need to bring on the day -
Home Baking
We are asking for donations of home baking for the Spring Festival to be held on Friday 13 October. The P&C have kindly provided some 12cm x 12cm plastic trays for your baking. If you would like some of these trays, please drop into the office and pick some up. Baking can be dropped to the office the Thursday afternoon 12 October or on the morning of the Spring Festival, Friday 13 October.
Surf Life Saving Queensland’s Westpac Lifesaver Rescue Helicopter Service
Surf Life Saving Queensland’s Westpac Lifesaver Rescue Helicopter Service is one of the oldest community-based helicopter rescue services in the world, this year celebrating its 40th anniversary. The service has been operating across South-East Queensland since 1976. With a highly-trained team of skilled men and women, the service exists for one purpose – to save lives. We have been lucky enough to have the helicopter and their dedicated crew visit us at our Spring Festival on Friday 13 October. The service is very kindly attending free of charge to help raise awareness of this vital service. Once the helicopter has landed the crew will address the students and we would like to be able to thank them with a donation to go towards this invaluable service. Students can drop in their gold coin donation to the office before Friday 13 October.
Spring Festival Tuckshop order forms
Please find attached to this newsletter, breakfast and lunch order forms for Friday 13 October. Please return all forms with correct money on or before Wednesday 11 October to the P&C box located in the office. A coffee van will be present on the day for parents to purchase a morning coffee.
While there will be extra food on the day it is preferred that students and parents order lunch in advance to ensure that everyone gets their food at the same time without any waiting and ensures accurate catering, reducing waste.
All students from years 1 to 6 will need to bring a sock, recyclable bag and small plastic bottle with lid.
Student Resource Scheme Survey
Jones Hill State School operates a Student Resource Scheme (SRS) for students from Prep to Year 6. Participation in the scheme is voluntary, and there is no obligation on a parent to participate in the scheme.
2017 saw an excellent uptake of the scheme and was also greatly appreciated by the teaching staff. Not only do the students all have the same items but not having the first day inconvenience of sorting books and stationery allowed a much more organised and calmer start to the year for students and teachers. Next week the new participation forms will go home to all families with a full explanation of the scheme attached. Booklists will be sent home in November 2018. As this was our first year of implementing the SRS we of course have identified areas that can be improved. To help us with these improvements we are asking that you fill in the simple survey below and return to the school before Friday 13 October. For further information, please visit our webpage

Student Banking
The P&C are looking for a volunteer to assist with the school student banking process. This only requires an hour of your time per week. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact the school office for further information.
Student Competition
The P&C are running a competition to find a new name for the school tuckshop. All students are invited to participate. Please be as creative as you like. Please place all entries in the P&C box at the office, clearly named. The winner of the competition will be announced at our school parade on Friday 27 October and will receive a $30 credit at the tuckshop. Another competition will be run to find the best logo for our tuckshop after week 4. The name and logo will take effect at the grand opening of the new look tuckshop in January 2018.
ROBOTICS CLUB AT FRASER COAST TECHNOLOGY CHALLENGE
Prior to the holidays Angus P, Steph W, Cody K, Caleb S and Kenzie H represented Jones Hill State School at the Fraser Coast Technology Challenge. I was very proud of our robotics students giving up their own time to represent the school. They met the challenge with maturity, patience and a good sense of humour and fun. The challenge is a high pressure situation that requires the students to problem solve and constantly tweak their programing over about a 5 hour period. We didn’t place anywhere this year but that’s not really the aim of the competition, although the students probably wouldn’t agree with me there. A big thank you to the parents and grandparents who came along, your time was much appreciated.
Regards, Rob Callaghan.
PREP 2018
Spaces are filling quickly. To ensure you secure a place, please contact our administration staff regarding registration, we still have some interview times available. For information about our Prep Transition program please click on the link below.
INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC NEWS
On Thursday the 14th September, all of the Beginner Brass Woodwind and Percussion students) from every State School in the district were invited to attend an intensive workshop hosted at the Southside State School. The workshop was facilitated by the local Multi-Instrumental teachers.
Participating students engaged in Ensemble techniques, team building, expert sectional development and rehearsals. The final product was a concert for Family, Friends and Southside State School students. The combined ensemble performed two contrasting pieces as well as a play complete with actors accompanied by the Beginner Brass Woodwind and Percussion orchestra including 15 short pieces to accompany the story. All pieces were rehearsed, workshopped and performed by participating students for the first time at the workshop. The students from Jones Hill School enjoyed their day and were very well behaved and participated fully. They were excellent ambassadors for themselves and their school.
The Beginner Brass Woodwind and Percussion workshops were a great success. Students demonstrated outstanding behaviour, commitment and impressive results were obvious from the first note of the performance to the last.

Book Fair 17 - 20 October, 2017
Reading for pleasure inside and outside of school has real and long-lasting benefits. It unlocks the power of information and imagination and helps children discover who they are. Here’s what you can do to help children develop stronger reading skills and a love for reading:
- Set the example. Let children see you read.
- Have a collection of books in the home. Update this collection routinely to keep pace with changing tastes and reading skills.
- Support our school’s Book Fair. Allow your children to choose their own books to read.
Our Scholastic Book Fair is a reading event that brings to school the books kids want to read. It’s a wonderful selection of engaging and affordable books for every reading level. Please make plans to visit our Book Fair and be involved in shaping your child’s reading habits.
