LEADERSHIP TEAM REPORT
Hi Everyone,
STUDENT RESOURCE SCHEME PARTICIPATION 2018
With the great success of the Student Resource Scheme in 2017 we have decided to continue the program in 2018. We have made some changes to the stationery list with input from parents and staff but the cost has remained the same at $120. Students have received a yellow Student Resource Scheme participation form. This yellow form must be returned whether you are joining the scheme or not. Forms need to be returned by Friday 27 October and either full payment or your first payment of $40 must be made by Friday 1 December. Families who make full payment before the end of the year will go into the draw to win a LOWES voucher of $100 to purchase school uniforms.
For those parents who do not wish to join the program, a non-participation fee of $40 will be charged and you will be required to purchase a full stationery list. Parents will also need to pay for extra learning activity consumables such as cooking and computer programs, e.g. Raz Reading and Pat-R reading booklets that only the school can provide. Due to the changes on the list this year it is important that only the items on the booklist are purchased to support your child’s learning. Teachers have planned their stationery around the SRS and it is disruptive to the students when they do not have the same items as the rest of the class.
This year the exercise books have a protective plastic cover and will be in a range of different colours. Most classes will use the different colours for different subjects making the books easily identifiable. The books will not need to be covered by parents. These are the only type of exercise books to be supplied by parents not in the scheme.
If you have any questions at all please contact the Business Manager on 54890555. This information is also available on our website below

SPRING FESTIVAL
Thank you to all the students and parents who participated in our spring festival ensuring it was a great success.
The students, staff and parents did an awesome job with their displays in the hall. We had record entries in each category, especially the mum and dad entries. It was a beautiful display of the talent held by our Jones Hill school community.
Despite the poor weather conditions the children were able to attend all the timetabled activities, enjoying interacting with a variety of animals, market stalls and community groups. The Police Van and Rural Fire Brigade were a great hit; with students who enjoyed being finger printed, trying out a bullet proof vest and testing the siren and water hoses for the rural firemen.
Prizes will be delivered to students throughout the week for their works of art. Parent prizes will be presented at this week’s parade. Parents unable to attend will have their prize presented to their child.
We are making every effort to get the Westpac Rescue Helicopter to reschedule its visit in the near future.
A special thank you to the following people:
- Our Groundsman Mr Rentz and his lovely father who helped set up all the visiting activities and displays and rescuing them when the weather turned nasty.
- Our P&C volunteers who organised and operated the canteen and did an awesome job. From the tuckshop, Jo and Ashley who were appreciated by the volunteers as they enjoyed the refreshments they supplied.
- Our wonderful group of teacher aides who ran the craft and game activities. The teachers who ensured the children were organised and involved in the activities. The specialist teachers for running activities. Mr Watt for coordinating the parades and ensuring all activities ran smoothly.
- The community members who gave up their time to work with the children. A list is attached at the end of the newsletter.
- The group of year 6 students, Maryem, Mahalia, Eva, Indianna, Lara, Lilly and Shanae who helped with organising the day and looked after visitors.
- All the parents and grandparents who contributed to our home baking stall.
- The organising group, Mrs Wells, Mrs Pengelly, Ms Coates, Mrs Cole and Mrs Grogan.
Feedback is welcome as we are sure another committee will take it on board for an even better festival in the future.

STAFF TRAINING
It’s a Jungle!
On the Pupil Free Day, the Jones Hill State School teachers and teacher aides attended a workshop called It’s a Jungle! run by Dr Brenda Heyworth (psychologist) about the emotional state of children. Children need to learn how to cope with their emotional world, but their emotions are swirling so wildly that they can’t work it out for themselves. It’s our job to teach them how.
The key is SELF CONTROL. The three steps to Self Control are -
- Know the Line – self control is to know where the line is. The line tells us where things go from being okay to not okay e.g. it’s okay to be angry but it’s not okay to hit your sister. The line is “no hitting”.
- How to Settle – if emotions have swirled up and over we need to be able to settle back down again. Need to be able to bring them back inside the line. Time and space is effective. The ultimate would be settling emotions down before they bust over the line.
- Move on – once a mistake is made it’s best to leave it behind, forgive ourselves and move on, not carry the mistakes and allow it to fester inside us to make us feel bad. Let them go and start again.
Dr Brenda Heyworth has written a book called It’s a Jungle! Parent Guide. Jones Hill State School and Gympie South State School have teamed up to present a parent session at Gympie South SS on October 31 (see details at the end of this newsletter). A great opportunity for parents to learn how to help their children with their emotions and behaviour.
Kind Regards,
James Watt and Helen Grogan
