LEADERSHIP TEAM REPORT
Hi Everyone,
SCHOOL LEADERS
Last Friday we inducted our School Captains and Leadership Team for 2018. What a wonderful group of young people!
Congratulations to Billy R and Chloe B our 2018 School Captains and to our Sports House Captains, Doran – Campbell G and Shelby D; McPaul – Jackson T and Eva Z; Radford – Aidan R and Keeley K.
During the investiture I outlined the 10 Qualities of good leadership as defined by the Make a Dent Leadership Institute, which include;
Being trustworthy
Being self aware and insightful
Learning, growing and expanding your abilities
Having high self worth and self esteem
Being excited by life
Being able to find solutions and not blame
Refusing to gossip
Grow as a person
Being open to others
Being able to engage and energise those around you
Each of the leaders that were inducted on Friday have demonstrated these qualities and are supported by great families with strong moral values. Congratulations to all those students and their families.
I look forward to working with this leadership team over the year.
Students in year five will continue to work towards being our school leaders in 2019.
CANBERRA
Tuesday night we held our Canberra Trip meeting which was well attended by our families in year 5 and 6. Pam and Danielle from EducaTours talked us through the trip and attractions supported by a photo slide show.
We will be sending 50 students this year to our nation’s capital where some will see snow for the first time!
Last night students received a package of forms and information. If you were unable to attend last night we have sent these home with your children today. If you did not receive the package, please contact our school office.
Canberra Government Funding Contribution
Students from our school will be undertaking an educational tour of the national capital from June 24 to June 29. Students will be given the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy.
The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government is contributing funding of $60 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs.
LEM PHONICS PARENT INFORMATION EVENING
Tuesday night we also ran our first LEM Phonics session for the year. It was great to see parents support this initiative and learn a bit more about supporting their students with the learning of phonics. In Term two we will run the second instalment for parents to learn more about this program.
For those who were unable to attend the first parent evening we will be holding another parent session. The date and time will be advertised soon.
Thank you to Mrs Levis for her time and work on this in her new role as Head of Curriculum.
QUEEN’S BATON RELAY
On March 26 our very own Amber S (Year 6 student) will be running with the Queen’s Baton in Mary Street for the Commonwealth Games Queen’s Baton Relay. Our grade 4 to 6 classes have been given the opportunity to attend the Queen’s Baton Relay Community Celebration in Albert Park and then cheer on Amber as she completes her course on the relay run in Mary Street and see the baton first hand. Activities at the Celebration include live entertainment by Caitlyn Shadbolt, children’s entertainer Games Boy ’18, and the Gympie Council has organised mini Commonwealth Games sporting activities for the students to participate in. A reminder to parents that permission and medical forms must be returned to our office no later than March 9.
2017 YEAR BOOKS
Did you miss out on getting a copy of our 2017 Jones Hill School Year Book? We still have a few copies left full of memories and photos. Only $14 each. See our office staff to purchase yours today.

LEM PHONICS NEWS
We had a slight misprint in our last newsletter, so we’re including last fortnight’s information again.
What is LEM Phonics and why is it important?
Phonics is the explicit teaching of the connection between letters and sounds. Each sound in the English language can be represented by a single letter (k, t, v) or a combination of letters (ay, eigh, tch). These written representations of sound are called phonograms. There are 75 phonograms that represents the 42 sounds (or phonemes) of the English language. Systematic, explicit phonics instruction teaches all the letter combinations (phonograms) that are used to represent the sounds of English because the 26 letters of the alphabet alone are inadequate. LEM Phonics provides students with the skills to break words into syllables and either decode them (for reading) or encode them (for spelling) by using specific reading and spelling rules.
LEM Phonics Reading and Spelling Rules
Every week, your child will be learning a new reading and/or spelling rule.
Reading rules answer the question, "What sound is that phonogram saying?" For example, “Does the ‘c’ in the word ‘cent’ say /k/ or /s/?”
- LEM Rule: ‘c’ says its second sound /s/ when followed by ‘e’, ‘i’ or ‘y’.
Spelling rules answer the question, "What phonogram do I need to use to say that particular sound?" For example, “Should the word ‘clown’ be spelled with a ‘c’ or a ‘k’?
- LEM Rule: usually use ‘c’ for the /k/ sound before ‘a’, ‘o’, ‘u’ or a consonant.
Your child will also learn specific syllable rules giving them the tools to confidently break any word into its parts. Syllabication is an essential skill to successfully decode (read) and encode (spell) unfamiliar words.
Children in Years 1 to 6, have already learnt the following rules:
Rule 1 (Week 2): Vowels usually say their first sound when followed by a consonant in the same syllable. For example, can, step, trip, flop, fun.
Rule 2 (Week 3): Vowels usually say their second sound at the end of a syllable.
For example:
Rule 3 (Week 4): Usually use ‘c’ for the /k/ sound if followed by ‘a’, ‘o’, ‘u’ or a consonant. For example, catch, cook, cutlery, cloud.
Rule 4 (Week 5): Usually use ‘k’ for the /k/ sound if followed by ‘e’, ‘i’ or ‘y’. For example, kettle, kitten, Kylie.
The rules that your child will be learning this week and next week are:
Rule 5 (Week 6): The phonogram ‘a’ is usually used for the /ar/ sound when followed by two consonants. The third sound of ‘a’ is /ar/. (Exceptions: words ending in ‘sh’ and ‘ch’.)
For example:
Exercise: Use the above rule to complete the following words (and “code” the words if you can):
cl__ss |
cr__ft |
gr__sp |
p__lm |
bl__st |
h__lf |
dem__nd |
photogr__ph |
Rule 6 (Week 7): The phonograms ‘c’ and ‘g’ usually say their second sound when followed by ‘e’, ‘i’ and ‘y’. The second sound of ‘c’ is /s/ and the second sound of ‘g’ is /j/.
For example:
Exercise: Use the above rule to write down the correct phonogram ‘c’ or ‘g’ in the following words (and “code” the words if you can):
__entral |
re__ipe |
__ymbal |
__entle |
ori__in |
ener__y |

Before school Routine
At JHSS we have a morning routine that provides a safe area for all students. If students arrive before 8:00 am they are to go to the office.
When the bell rings at 8:00am, students can put their bags on the port racks then move to these areas:
Prep students sit on the
verandah outside their classroom and wait quietly for the 8:30am
bell.
Years 1-3 students sit quietly in the 1-3
eating area until the 8:30am bell.
Years 4-6 students sit quietly in the 4-6
eating area until the 8:30am bell.
Students are not to loiter at or around the classrooms or any other area
even when they are accompanied by a parent.
Students who have tuckshop may place their order at the tuckshop and return
to their eating area.
After School Routine
The first bell rings at 2:55pm, this is the pack up bell and students will be directed to pack up by their teacher.
The second bell rings at 3:00pm and students will be sent home. Students are then to gather their bag and belongings and move safely to the area they will be picked up. When catching the bus, students walk to the bus area and sit quietly.
The only areas students can walk out of the school to be picked up are:
- The gate at the hall.(Heilbronn Road)
- The front gate. (near the crossing on McIntosh Creek Road)
- The gate near the tuckshop. (McIntosh Creek Road)
- Prep gate (next to Public Car Park at the corner of Heilbronn Road and McIntosh Creek Road)
Students are not to walk out through the staff car park or be picked up in the staff carpark. Students are not to wait at the staff carpark gates to be picked up.
This ensures the safety of all students at Jones Hill State School.

MEET OUR STAFF
FIONA COLE
This is my 35th year in Education Queensland’s employment. I’ve been fortunate to work in some amazing places in the state (following my husband’s principal promotions): Bamaga, Saibai Island, Mackay and Moranbah before settling into loving our piece of paradise at Pie Creek. I’ve spent most of my time teaching at Gympie East, however have thoroughly enjoyed reducing my carbon footprint by living only eight minutes from home. This will be my sixth year at Jones Hill and I am enjoying this year especially teaching siblings of children in past years, so I’m feeling part of the Jones Hill State School family. I’m a proud mum of two children who are currently studying their Masters of Teaching! Now-a-days, I’m happily learning Rock n Roll dancing for fun and fitness.
JODIE LOUGHLAND
Hello, my name is Jodie Loughland and this is my second year teaching at Jones Hill (with a year of maternity leave in-between). I've been teaching for about 12 years, in schools from Logan to Longreach. Teaching is both a challenging and rewarding job, and I've loved teaching in different schools and on different year levels. My time out west was incredible and I encourage everyone to 'go west!' if the opportunity arises. The photo above is a special memory of getting to steer the paddleboat down the Thomson River in Longreach. I'm teaching part-time this year with the marvellous Mrs Millers on Year 4, and am looking forward to a great first term!
MATT HAMMANN
Jones Hill is a special place for me. That’s saying something, because my wife Cathy and I have each been in education for 45 years in NSW and Queensland, in both primary, secondary and a university college, in a variety of roles in teaching and administration. For me, that’s included teaching secondary history, special needs, a variety of primary classes and religious instruction. Yet I have never enjoyed teaching so much in a long time, as I do here; don’t tell Mr. Watt, but I think it’s a dream job. Teaching values in “You Can Do It” curriculum is great, because I believe we are all here for a wonderful purpose, and you give me the chance to support what you are already doing in trying to help your children. That’s to confidently discover what they each uniquely have to offer in looking after our fellow human beings; I believe that’s why we’re all put here together on this Earth, don’t you?!
Nonetheless, I have to admit the highlight of our joint lives is our three grown-up children and our six grandchildren. On weekends we enjoy church, our donkeys and Gympie. When I get the chance, I love to go camping in the ute, pull out the awning, and roll out the swag for a couple of nights. It combines a chance to read, reflect and relax. Also Cath lets me take and cook some of the tasty ‘guy-food’ I’m not often allowed at home.
If you already know me, you know I really enjoy meeting the folk connected with Jones Hill, especially the parents. Everyone has their own great story. Three days a week is enough for me at my stage of life, but not enough to get to know as many of your stories as I’d like. It’s a test of my memory to say each name within 3 seconds of seeing your children, but that’s my goal every year and last year I managed to get all 400 by the end of Term 1 and of course I try to add at least one of their interests to that corner of my brain. Thanks for enduring old Mr Handsome’s sick sense of humour that at least some of your children have somehow remembered enough to repeat when they get home. I can almost hear your groans now. Keep it coming, I say! I also dearly hope they tell you something else they remember about the lessons when you ask them.
