LEADERSHIP TEAM REPORT
Hi Everyone,
We have reached the end of what has been a very busy term one! Particular congratulations to our 73 Prep students who have settled in beautifully. Also our year 6 leaders who have started 2018 with great ideas and plans.
HOLIDAYS
As Friday is a holiday we will have no parade this week. Our last day of school for Term 1 is Thursday March 29. Monday April 16 is a Pupil Free Day and school resumes for all students on Tuesday April 17. If you would like to enrol your child/ren in holiday care for the pupil free day on Monday 16 April, please visit the Camp Australia website and register. Have a safe and happy Easter break.
MORCOMBE FOUNDATION PRESENTATION
Last week 150 students attended a talk with Bruce and Denise Morcombe about staying safe. Three of the messages were around having a plan, walking home listening to your body signs about danger and having a family code word for other people picking you up if parents can’t. QUEEN’S BATON RELAY
On Monday March 26 the year 4 to 6 students attended the Queen’s Baton Relay and participated in some Commonwealth Games Sports including long jump, relays and modified javelin. We listened to Caitlyn Shadbolt perform and went to watch Amber S from our year 6 leadership team carry the baton with pride and school spirit. The Jones Hill year 4 to 6 students cheered for Amber as she became part of history as the baton made its way on its journey to the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast. We are very proud of Amber and she is a worthy ambassador for young children everywhere.

GOODBYE TO A WONDERFUL VOLUNTEER
Chris Beckmann has been working in our tuckshop voluntarily for the last two and a half years. Chris has been a tireless worker and has made many friends with staff, students and parents. This Thursday is Chris’ last day as she heads off to enjoy time with her husband, travelling around Australia. We would like to thank her for all her hard work and wish her all the best in her travels.
ENROLMENT MANAGEMENT PLAN
Due to increasing enrolment growth and Jones Hills’ great reputation, we are approaching our enrolment capacity and as a result we will now be implementing the school’s new Enrolment Management Plan for our catchment area. A school catchment area is the geographical location where a state school’s core intake of students must live.
Any student, whose principal place of residence is within the school’s catchment area, is (subject to the Education (General Provisions) Act 2006) entitled to enrol at the school. Under the Act, the student must be living within catchment at the time of enrolment application in order to be eligible to enrol. This means that new enrolments must have proof of residency. The school Principal will reserve places for students who move into the catchment area throughout the school year.
There are circumstances which allow the school to enrol students from out of the catchment area. The following groups of students will be entitled to enrol, even though they may reside outside the school’s catchment area.
- Siblings of current students at the school in 2018
- Students whose parent or legal guardian is employed by the school
- Children and young people who are subject to child protection orders grant guardianship or custody to the Chief Executive Officer of the Department of Communities, Child Safety and Disability Services (Child Safety Services)
- Students who live outside the catchment area and are verified with a disability can enrol in the school to attend the specialised disability program if it is the closest program to their home and meets their individualised needs
- Students who have been excluded from another school, dependent upon the conditions related to the exclusion, subject to agreement of the Regional Director.
Salvation Army Breakfast
Recently our School Leaders and I attended the annual 2018 Gympie Salvation Army School Information Breakfast held on Tuesday 27 March. The Salvation Army is best known for their fundraising drives and in particular the Red Shield Appeal. It is our hope to promote the great work done by the Salvation Army and continue to build on these important community relationships.
KNITTING CLUB
In preparation for Winter Trees on Mary Mrs Gills will be running a knitting club. Students from years 4 to 6 are welcome to join starting Monday week 2, Term 2. We would greatly appreciate any donations such as wool (especially the school colours), knitting needles, French knitting dolls, crochet needles.

MEET OUR STAFF
JULIE MITCHELL
I am Julie Mitchell. I have been teaching with the Jones Hill team since 2014 and have been working with our Preps since 2015. For me, it is a privilege to watch our students begin their formal learning journey and to see their enthusiasm and love of learning grow throughout their first year of school.
Outside of the classroom, I am ‘Mum’ to my three children. My boys are 14 and 12 and are now both in high school. My daughter is 4 and will start Prep next year. We enjoy living on acreage, along with our very spoilt cat and chickens. On the weekends we spend many hours outdoors swimming and surfing together on our fantastic local beaches.
KELDA KRAFFT
Hi, my name is Kelda Krafft. This is my second year as a teacher aide at Jones Hill School. It is very rewarding watching the children learn and grow in front of your eyes.
I am not new to the school, I have been a parent here for the last 8 years. I have 3 children, one in grade 2, grade 4 and grade 7. I love to be an active part in the school environment and volunteer where needed. I am a member of the school P&C, fundraising coordinator and uniform liaison for the school. When I am not at school I am often found at a sporting field around town. During the summer months I am on the baseball field with our local kids playing for Redbacks baseball.
JASON HUBNER
Hi my name is Jason Hubner
My family moved here to Gympie in April 2016 from Toowoomba. I have 2 girls that attend Jones Hill State School and my wife is the Adopt- a -Cop for the school as well as being a Scenes of Crime Police Officer.
I grew up in a small coal mining town called Moura in Central Queensland and was a trades qualified Boilermaker in the mines. I have been a teacher aide since the start of 2016 and I am enjoying my time here at Jones Hill. I love my rugby league and I follow the St.George Dragons in the NRL.
TINEKE FISH
Guten Tag
My name is Tineke Fish and I teach German to the Year 5 and 6 classes at JHSS.
I grew up in Brisbane. My parents came from the Netherlands and I grew up bilingual in Dutch and English. Several generations back some family members came from Germany. I learnt German at school and because I could speak Dutch, German was easy for me to learn. After school I majored in German language and literature as part of my Bachelor of Arts degree at Queensland University.
I have visited the Netherlands and Germany quite a few times both as a child and as an adult, sometimes staying for months at a time so I understand European culture quite well.
I enjoy teaching German because I use a combination of songs, games, partner conversations, computers, online learning and artwork as well as the regular bookwork.
Danke, Frau Fish
