LEADERSHIP TEAM REPORT

Hi Everyone,

Volunteer and Visitors Training

A wide range of people visit school for a multitude of reasons. Our school is committed to maintaining a safe environment for everyone. On Monday May 21 we will be conducting a session for all volunteers and visitors to our school to complete a new mandatory training guide. This guide covers the key messages and responsibilities you need to be aware of when helping at a school. All volunteers, visitors and contractors are now required to read and sign this mandatory training guide. The session will be held at our school office from 9am and will take approximately half an hour.

If you are unable to attend this session and are one of our many vital volunteers please see office staff for a copy of the guide.

Canberra Meeting

A meeting for parents will be held on Tuesday 15 May in the Library at 5.30pm. At this meeting we will discuss the final details for the trip. It is essential that all parents/caregivers attend this meeting. Items such as departure and arrival times at the school, contact details, spending money, mobile phones, cameras and behaviour expectations will be discussed.

Jones Hill Walking School Bus

Walking to school with friends promotes physical activity, social interaction and can provide a positive mindset to start the day. Due to a number of factors, the opportunities for students to walk to school safely are often limited. To provide an opportunity for our students to walk to school safely we are planning to introduce the “Jones Hill Walking School Bus”. Students are invited to join our walking school bus for its first journey on Thursday, May 24th at 8:15am. Parents and carers are also welcome to travel on the “Jones Hill Walking School Bus”.

The “Jones Hill Walking School Bus” route begins at Echelon Park, in the Echelon Estate, travels along the paved footpath on Presidential Avenue, then Heilbronn Road to the pedestrian crossing near the school hall. School staff members will be available to supervise and manage the safety of students during the walking school bus. If successful, this event may be extended to once a term with the objective of developing vital road crossing skills while promoting the health benefits of walking.

NAPLAN

On Tuesday 15, Wednesday 16 and Thursday 17 May, students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 will take part in the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy, or NAPLAN, as it is commonly known.

Skills that will be assessed include: reading, writing, spelling, grammar and punctuation, and numeracy.

These assessments are done here at school and are considered just another part of the curriculum.

It is important for you and your child to know that NAPLAN is not a pass/fail assessment. It simply looks at what level students are achieving in literacy and numeracy against National Standards and compared with student peers throughout Australia. The data is used to improve programs and planning for individual students.

The children have been well prepared for the assessment and need not stress about the day. It is imperative that the children be present on the day. Students who are not participating on the day have been catered for with alternative arrangements.

Later in the year we will send you an individual student NAPLAN report that you can use to view and monitor how your child is progressing.

More information is available on the NAP website:

Premier’s Reading Challenge 2018

I am delighted to invite all Jones Hill State School students to join in the 2018 Premier’s Reading Challenge.

Reading plays an important part in students’ lives during their school years and beyond.

It allows children to actively engage their imagination and opens up a world of educational opportunities.

Last year, an outstanding 156,000 students from 850 schools took part in the challenge reading a total of 2.19 million books.

The reading period for the 2018 Premier's Reading Challenge commences on Monday 14 May and closes Friday 24 August.

This year the Premier has challenged all state and non-state school students from Prep to Year 2 to read or experience 20 books, Years 3 and 4 to read 20 books and Years 5 to 9 to read 15 books. Experiencing books can include shared reading, listening to stories, or reading picture books. The aim for the 2018 challenge is to engage more students than ever before.

Every student who completes the challenge will receive a Certificate of Achievement signed by the Premier. Students who participate but don’t complete the challenge receive a Certificate of Participation from the school. It will be my great pleasure to present these certificates during the Premier’s Reading Challenge celebration weeks to be held 5 – 16 November 2018.

For more information about the Premier’s Reading Challenge, please visit:

http://education.qld.gov.au/schools/readingchallenge/

You can play a big part in your children’s future by encouraging them to be part of this positive initiative.

I look forward to seeing as many of our students as possible embrace the 2018 Premier’s Reading Challenge.

Teddy Bears Day Out

Last week we had our Pre-Prep friends visit us at Jones Hill SS for the Teddy Bears’ Picnic. The children and their families enjoyed time with our Prep students and teachers doing the parachute game, threading teddy bear pictures, water play, sand play, the obstacle course and play dough.

The children brought along their teddy to join in the fun! We had a great time meeting all of the children and their families and providing the opportunity for them to transition and get ready for Prep next year.

There will be more transition activities later in the year.

THE JONES HILL JUGGERNAUTS

The Jones Hill Juggernauts are a team of very keen and dedicated reading machines! Our small team are preparing to do battle in the Children’s Book Council of Australia Reader’s Cup on May 23. It is our very first time in this long running competition and our team of readers Eva Z, Billy R, Darcy H, Alice F and Lily B are all are doing a wonderful job. We are looking forward to the regional finals where we will meet with other reading teams to answer some really tricky questions about the four novels that we are reading.

Thanks to author and Jones Hill parent Karen Foxlee who has visited and given us some great advice and support. Our beautiful poster above was designed by Alice F.

Yours in reading, Mrs Blake (Year 1/2 Teacher)

Our Reading Team Mascot

The school would like to thank Sonia Blake and Karen Foxlee who donated the reading books to the Juggernauts, your generosity is very much appreciated.

NRL DEVELOPMENT CUP

On Thursday April 26 Jones Hill participated in the NRL Development Cup, a rugby league competition at Albert Park. After playing five teams from the Gympie region, Jones Hill finished in fifth place.

The whole team demonstrated excellent behaviours on and off the field. On behalf of the Jones Hill State School, I would like to congratulate the players for their resilience and hard work. We are certainly proud.

The team would like to acknowledge and thank Phil Rentz for giving up his time to train, organise and support the players.

Guy Littler (HPE Teacher)

NAPLAN QUESTIONS

Here are a few NAPLAN questions for you to try:

LEMS PHONICS NEWS

Reading and Spelling Rules

Rule 14: Use ‘a’ for the /o/ sound (its fifth sound) if preceded by a /w/ sound (‘w’, ‘wh’ or ‘qu’).

Rule 15: Use ‘ar’ for the /ar/ sound when followed by one consonant or at the end of a word.

For example: mark, star, dart

Exercises: Why is ‘a’ saying its fifth sound (/o/) in these words?

squad, quality, wash, squash, wallet, watch, quantity

Why do we use ‘ar’ instead of ‘a’ for the /ar/ sound in these words?

dark, harm, yard, bar, farm, bark, far, car, art

Syllable Rules

Let’s learn the final 2 Syllable Rules.

Syllable Rule # 9: When two vowels come together and are sounded separately, divide between these vowels.

Syllable Rule #10: When a word ends in ‘le’, divide the word before the previous consonant.

Exception: When a word ends in ‘ckle’, divide after the ‘ck’.

MEET OUR STAFF

Jennifer Hurren

Hi all, for those who don’t know me I am a Teacher Aide and am celebrating my 24th year at Jones Hill School. During those years I have filled many roles including library, computer lab, classroom and office. My favourite times of the school year are sports day (GO DORAN!), Book Week and Christmas. Any excuse to dress up.

I have lived in Gympie all my life and have 3 children and 6 grandchildren (who I never spoil). My husband runs a local computer business and every year we decorate our premises with Christmas lights. Each year we think maybe this year we will just do a little display but it is getting bigger and bigger.

My favourite part of working at a school is with the kids. I love to watch them grow and I love to catch up with them when they are adults. There is nothing more rewarding then having a young adult come and talk to you about their days at Jones Hill School and what they remember.

NAIDOC WEEK
