Premier’s Reading Challenge 2018

The Premier’s Reading Challenge is on again, running from May 14 to August 24. This year the Premier has challenged all state and non-state school students from Prep to Year 2 to read or experience 20 books, Years 3 and 4 to read 20 books and Years 5 to 9 to read 15 books. Experiencing books can include shared reading, listening to stories, or reading picture books. The aim for the 2018 challenge is to engage more students than ever before.

Students from year 1 to 6 have received forms to record the books they have read. More forms are available from the school office. Prep students will have their reading recorded by their teacher.

Jones Hill Walking School Bus

Walking to school with friends promotes physical activity, social interaction and can provide a positive mindset to start the day. Due to a number of factors, the opportunities for students to walk to school safely are often limited. To provide an opportunity for our students to walk to school safely we are planning to introduce the “Jones Hill Walking School Bus”. Students are invited to join our walking school bus for its first journey on Thursday, May 24th at 8:15am. Parents and carers are also welcome to travel on the “Jones Hill Walking School Bus”.

The “Jones Hill Walking School Bus” route begins at Echelon Park, in the Echelon Estate, travels along the paved footpath on Presidential Avenue, then Heilbronn Road to the pedestrian crossing near the school hall. School staff members will be available to supervise and manage the safety of students during the walking school bus. If successful, this event may be extended to once a term with the objective of developing vital road crossing skills while promoting the health benefits of walking. Breakfast will be provided in the hall by the School Breakfast Club and Chappy Cait.

Reader’s Cup Final

Our Reader’s Cup final is here! The Jones Hill State School Reader’s Cup Team, The Juggernauts, competed at Immanuel Lutheran College, Buderim this week.

Congratulations to Eva Z, Darcy H, Billy R, Alice F, Lily B and Mrs Blake. To prepare for the Readers Cup Regional Final, the children read 5 novels. They competed against 27 teams, answering questions about the books. We are proud of the Juggernauts, which is the only Gympie Team competing at the Regional Final.

We would like to say thanks to all parents for supporting their children throughout the course of this competition. We have been so proud of their hard work and dedication and it is our hope that each and every student has gained a greater love for reading widely and that along the way, they have made new friends and enjoyed working as a team. All term long, we have loved the fun and energy that they brought to Mrs Blake’s classroom each lunch break. Well done Juggernauts!

We would also like to thank Karen Foxlee. Karen has guided and supported the Juggernauts throughout the term and we are very grateful for her help.

NEWSFLASH:

Jones Hill Juggernauts did an amazing job! We came second in our heat. Unfortunately the team does not go through to the final but wow they were amazing!! We got a total of 40 from 50 points. We placed in a tie 5th out of 29 teams. Amazing!!

SWPBS NEWS

We are revising how to use the bathroom areas safely and respectfully. We will learn how to be safe, private, respectful and have good personal hygiene practices in bathroom areas. All classes will talk about feeling safe and learning how to stay healthy.

Activity ideas: How easy do germs spread?

Students can put some powder on their hands to represent germs, then walk out of the room touching the door handle, light switch and table. Students will see how the powder (germs) are left behind. This can be linked back to washing our hands after using the toilets and blowing our nose.

YOU CAN DO IT

Here are two logos designed by Zavia V (5N) and Lara B (4W) to illustrate the PRO values we are endeavouring to take on board to help us be better learners and family and community members: Persistence, Resilience, Organisation.

This week: PERSISTENCE: “...to consistently work for good, without giving up.”

Each YCDI newsletter will also feature a comic highlighting the value we are studying. After this week, we hope to have comics contributed by some students who are keen to draw and have a sharp sense of humour!

Keep your eye out for the next issue on “Resilience”!

MEET OUR STAFF

Lorretta Levis

Hi everyone, I am Lorretta Levis, the HOC (Head of Curriculum) and this is my third year at Jones Hill State School. I have taught previously at Wolvi and Mary Valley. I enjoy working at Jones Hill and love to see the welcoming smiles and eagerness to learn that all of our students have. I love to see all the students progressing with reading and having a love of books. Reading their fantastic stories and poems is always a highlight.

I have lived in Gympie for most of my life and have two lovely daughters who make me very proud and happy every day. My husband and I love science fiction movies and love reading books. I love classic cars, my favourite being a Valiant Charger. When I was 14 years old I bought a charger and did the engine and body work with my dad. I took the engine fully apart and was able to learn to weld, sand, shape and spray paint panels. I was able to register the charger when I finished and used it as my wedding car. I loved going to the V8 races and meeting Peter Brock – he even let me have a go in his V8 HRT Holden.

Ezri, my eldest daughter, loves to care for animals and to learn about them. She has been able to spend time talking to zoo keepers about how to care for animals and to work at a zoo. She has held and patted an eagle, an echidna, possum, koala, a dolphin, seal, dingo and more. We loved going behind the scenes at SeaWorld and sitting 20 cm away from the baby polar bear feeding with the mother polar bear – this was amazing. However, Ezri’s favourite has to be snakes (not my favourite!).

Ella, our youngest daughter, loves to read, write and draw. Ella will often spend her free time writing poetry and stories. She enjoys creating portraits of people by turning them into anime characters or lifelike sketches. Ella also likes to cook cakes and to decorate them in intricate ways. Ella likes the villains in comic books.

My family loves to travel and see new places around Australia. We enjoy camping and visiting our family who live up north. Ezri and Ella love to visit their Grandma who enjoys spending time with them reading, going to the park, cooking and camping.

Katrina Beyer

I’ve been teaching at Jones Hill for almost 18 years. I’ve had classes up to Year 5, but have mostly been with Prep and Year 1. Before moving to Gympie in 2000 I worked in Bundaberg as a kindy and preschool teacher, also teaching adults the Diploma of Child Care and Education at TAFE.

I am the very proud mum of Dana and Liam, who are 18 and 15. They both enjoyed their primary school years at Jones Hill. It’s been exciting for me to see what my children can achieve as they’ve grown towards adulthood.

School keeps me very busy and I’m always trying to keep a balance between work, home, family, friends and fun (as we all are!). I enjoy keeping fit through crossfit and walking/hiking/running. I’m always up for something new, having tried out Tough Mudder, The Caloundra Foreshore 10k Run and The Gold Coast Kokoda Challenge over the past few years. I’m currently completing a high ropes course and look forward to assisting students at the Gympie East School high ropes days in the future. I’ve participated in our Jones Hill Relay for Life team for the past 6 years. This is a cause close to my heart and I’m sure it will be well supported again this year.

I feel very fortunate to have been a part of the Jones Hill community for such a long time - long enough to see a few past students returning with their own! Seeing the progress my students make each year, as a class and individuals, is extremely rewarding. 1B and I are having a fantastic 2018. See you ‘round.
