LEADERSHIP TEAM REPORT

Hi Everyone,

Last week I had the privilege of taking part in a school review as part of the School Improvement Unit. Every four years schools undergo a rigorous review process to plan their improvement agenda for the next four years.

I would like to thank Mrs Seed for keeping things running smoothly in my absence.

We are fast approaching the end of term 2. Students are looking forward to Sports Day on Friday and representing their house teams.

Our year 5 & 6 students are excitedly preparing for their trip to Canberra next week. What a wonderful experience. Pack your woolies!

Students not attending Canberra will be engaged in normal school activities and be our school leaders for the week.

PJ and Crazy Hair Day

The students at Jones Hill SS showed their community spirit on Friday 15th June by wearing their pyjamas and having crazy hairdos.

The children were showing their support for the Gympie Salvation Army, making a gold coin donation for people less fortunate than us. This was a lot of fun and a great way to support a good cause. What fantastic citizens our Students are! We raised $440, which was handed to Major Brian Smith today by our School Leaders.

We may have had our PJs on and Crazy Hair but we still worked hard.

Report Cards

Report cards will be issued tomorrow, Thursday June 21. While parent, teacher meetings are conducted in terms 1 & 3, parents are always welcome to make an appointment to discuss the report cards if needed.

Dance Fever

Jones Hill School will be running Dance Fever lessons again this year in term 3. Students have been invoiced and payment needs to be completed by Friday June 29. These lessons form part of our HPE curriculum. Over the last three years the students have enjoyed these lessons immensely and then enjoyed showing off their new skills to their parents during a dance presentation at the end of the term.

Premier’s Reading Challenge

The Premier’s Reading Challenge is on again, running from May 14 to August 24. This year the Premier has challenged all state and non-state school students from Prep to Year 2 to read or experience 20 books, Years 3 and 4 to read 20 books and Years 5 to 9 to read 15 books. Experiencing books can include shared reading, listening to stories, or reading picture books. The aim for the 2018 challenge is to engage more students than ever before.

Students from year 1 to 6 have received forms to record the books they have read. More forms are available from the school office.

Prep students will have their reading recorded by their teacher.

2019 Prep Transition Day

We would like to invite all children who will be starting Prep in 2019 and their parents to attend our next Prep Transition Day, Pop Up Adventure Play Day.

If you or someone you know have a child who is eligible to start Prep next year (born between 1 July 2013 and 30 June), please see our office staff to register their names.

Kind Regards,
James Watt and Stacey Seed

LEMS PHONICS NEWS

Reading and Spelling Rules

Rule 20: Silent Servant ‘e’ sometimes serves no purpose and is referred to as ‘no job ‘e’’ orhelpless ‘e’’. The ‘e’s that remain in the spelling of modern English words are remnants of English words from the 13th century (Chaucerian English) when many words ended with a sounded ‘e’. Most of these ‘e’s have been dropped over the years but a few remain and have become silent.

Rule 21: Use ‘ay’ not ‘a’ for the /ay/ sound at the end of a word.

For example: play, stay, away, clay

Exercises:

Add the correct phonogram representing the /ay/ sound to the end of these words. Why did you use that phonogram to say /ay/?

BRONCOS CHALLENGE

Round 1

On Friday June 15 Jones Hill participated in the Broncos Challenge, a rugby league competition at Albert Park. After playing five teams from the Gympie region, Jones Hill ended the day being undefeated. Despite being a preliminary event, Jones Hill State School is immensely proud of our team and would like to congratulate the players for their resilience, skills and hard work. Round two of the event is when schools will be competing for the Broncos Challenge Shield, this will be played on Friday 14th September.

In addition, the team would like to acknowledge and thank Phil Rentz (head coach) for giving up his time to train, organise and support the players.

YOU CAN DO IT

"In practising HUMILITY (thinking of others more than ourselves), each class, as part of Team Thor, has hammered together a wooden flower pot holder to give to Grevillea Gardens Aged Care.

This will bring the residents a lot of cheer that someone is thinking about them. Bunnings has offered a special deal on the potted flowers, but if any children would like to donate 50c or a dollar to the cost, they can deposit it in the tin in the Library. The flower baskets will be presented to Grevillea Gardens on Friday, 29 June."

CHIROPRATIC CHARITY PROGRAM

Dr. Mo Waters of Waters Edge Chiropractic is running a Charity Program called Good Posture for a Good Cause, where we support the community by doing kids posture checks, using cutting edge digital technology, for only $5. The money will be donated to the Australian Spinal Research Foundation. Just give us a ring on 5482 8477 to book your child in during the school holidays. Good posture promotes health and wellbeing!

MEET OUR STAFF

Tanya O’Hanlon

Hi everyone my name is Tanya O'Hanlon and I am a teacher aide at Jones Hill State School. I have had the pleasure of working here since 2015. Being a teacher aide is such a fulfilling job, I just love helping the students to learn, this has always been my dream job and I'm now doing it.

I grew up in the small town of Kandanga which is in the Mary Valley. This is where I met my partner Shane. We decided to buy a house in Jones Hill and have been here for 11 years now. We unfortunately don't get to see Shane as often as we would like as he works away in SA doing FIFO. We have two beautiful children, that help keep me busy and both attend Jones Hill State School. Thomas is in year 5 and Izzy is in year 3. We have two super cute dogs, Louie and Charli who are spoilt rotten and one very cute cat, Poppy.

Some of my favourite things to do when I'm not working is to get into my garden, I just love plants and it's so relaxing. I also love going to the beach with my family relaxing and fishing. We love going to Borumba Dam and taking our speed boat out, but only in summer otherwise it’s too cold. But unfortunately these don't happen as often as we would like. So if you see me around the school please say hi and I look forward to many more great years at Jones Hill State School.

Suesane Walker

My name is Suesane Walker and I work in the front office at Jones Hill State School. I have been working in Administration for Queensland schools for the last seven years. My husband Matthew and I have three beautiful children James (who currently attends Jones Hill State School), Charlie and Penny. We also have two fur babies, a kelpie x puppy named Sadie and a cat who we have named Bunny. My children enjoy sport especially soccer, so we spend most of our afternoons after school and weekends participating in different activities and sport. When I do have some spare time I enjoy the gym and spending time with my two beautiful nieces.
