Hi Everyone,
GYMPIE HIGH SCHOOL SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS
Congratulations to Shelby D, Billy R and Tobias M who were recently presented 2019 scholarships from Gympie High School. Mr Lanskey, Principal, presented Shelby and Billy with Academic Scholarships and Tobias with a Sporting Scholarship. It is a great reward for your hard work and a wonderful acknowledgement for your family and teachers.
BURRUMBUTTOCK HAY RUNNERS
On the 7th of September we are fundraising for the Burrumbuttock Hay Runners. It is a gold coin donation to dress up as one of your farm friends.
Some examples of what to dress up as are a; farmer, cow, tractor, garden bed, straw hat. Feel free to think up your own ideas.
To help raise more funds our year 6 students will be selling Zooper Dooper ice blocks from the large undercover area at second break for $1.

BOOKWEEK 2018
What a wonderful day we had Friday celebrating the end of book week with a dress up day. Curtis Dray, the children’s librarian from the Gympie Town Library started our day off with a laugh by reading ‘Busting’ by Aaron Blabey. The theme ‘Find your Treasure’ was supported by many staff and students. A great array of characters were seen parading around the oval including many Pirates, Robin Hood and a number of Where’s Wally. Jones Hill students showed their love of books and reading.

PREP 2019 - SECURE YOUR PLACE NOW
We encourage all parents interested in enrolling in Prep for 2019 to enrol their child as soon as possible as vacancies are filling fast.
To enrol your child in our Prep program please contact the school office by phone on 5489 0555, email admin@jonehillss.eq.edu.au or visit us in person. Enrolment interviews will take place this term and your child will need to attend this appointment with you. Some interview times are available.
Prep is the first year of school and provides the foundation for your child's education. From 2017 it became compulsory for Queensland children to undertake Prep prior to Year 1. Prep is a full-time program in primary schools. Children must be 5 by 30 June in the year they enrol. Please follow the link provided for more information.
https://www.qld.gov.au/education/earlychildhood/prep/pages/enrolments
To help our new Prep students to have a smooth transition to school we are holding a number of transition days for them and their parents to attend. Full details of these days are available by clicking on the link below.
STUDENT RESOURCE SCHEME
This year Jones Hill School ran a Student Resource Scheme that included a full stationery book list. The scheme was overwhelmingly supported by parents/caregivers and was very successful. As with all things, we are looking to improve this scheme and have already received some very good feedback from staff, parents and students. The operation of the Student Resource Scheme is discussed annually at a meeting of the Parents and Citizens’ Association. Parents are extended an invitation to attend this meeting and provided with an opportunity to express their opinions. A vote is taken at this meeting on supporting the operation of the scheme. The date for this P&C meeting is Tuesday 11 September.
Participation in the scheme is voluntary and no obligation is placed on a parent/guardian to participate. However, if you choose not to participate, you will be required to provide all textbooks and resources that would have been otherwise provided by participation in the scheme and pay a non-participation fee which will cover the cost of items such as classroom learning activities, resources, textbooks (including photocopied textbooks used in lieu of traditional textbooks) and all licences for Computer Programs (this includes Apps for iPads). Full details of the Jones Hill Student Resource Scheme will be published in future newsletters to allow parents the opportunity to make informed decisions.
CARE PACKAGES
Continuing the great Jones Hill Spirit this year we are have been collecting items to distribute care packages to our troops serving overseas and the explosive detection dogs.
These men, women and animals do a magnificent job under very difficult circumstances to serve our country and ensure the world is a better place.
To support these wonderful efforts, classes will collect items that can be sent as Care Packages. Classes have chosen to collect items for either a male soldier, female soldier or explosive detection dog (EDD).

MUSTER VOLUNTEERS
Last week the P&C ran a roster of volunteers that covered the ticketing booth and entry gates to the Gympie Music Muster and this team was led by Col Morley. We would like to thank everyone involved and especially Col for the huge effort that it takes to organise five days of rostered volunteers. It is an amazing accomplishment and a lot of hard work. Thank you Col for your commitment to our school and thank you to your band of dedicated volunteers. I think all would agree that it was a wonderful experience that was a lot of fun.
Kind Regards,
James Watt and Stacey Seed
THANK YOU MUSTER VOLUNTEERS
A big thank you to all for volunteering your time over the Muster period. We successfully fulfilled our role and enhanced our school’s reputation in the process. I received a thumbs-up from APEX on Sunday evening.
While $3500 may not seem a lot of money for the overall effort, it is a quarter of the P&C’s anticipated fundraising goal for the year, therefore you can all give yourself a congratulatory pat-on-back.
We also need to thank John Madill Toyota for their continued patronage in gifting us a 7-seat courtesy vehicle including the fuel and post-use cleaning; without which, our very flexible roster would be reliant on the boisterous Muster shuttle bus.
A black vest was left at the muster - please see our office staff.
So until I pester you all to fill a shift next year.
Col Morley

LEM Phonics
It has been wonderful to visit classrooms and see the amazing work our teachers and students are doing with LEM phonics. Now that it is near the end of the term, it is beneficial for students to revise the spelling rules that they have focused on this term. At home, families could practise what the rules are and writing down words that follow that rule or play some games such as snap, snakes and ladders and go fish with the sounds.
Here are the rules that we have learnt this term:
Rule 18: Silent Servant ‘e’ allows both the vowel and the ‘c’ or ‘g’ to say their second sounds. (space, page)
Rule 19: Every syllable must have a written vowel and a vowel sound. Silent Servant ‘e’ will often provide the vowel. (lit∙tle)
Rule 20: No job ‘e’ (Silent Servant ‘e’ serves no purpose). (are, come)
Rule 21: Use ‘ay’ not ‘a’ for the /ay/ sound at the end of a word. (play)
Rule 22: Use ‘ay’ at the end of
a word and ‘ai’ at the beginning and within words. (play, rain)
Extra Rule: ‘ay’ may also be used at the end of a syllable if the following
syllable begins with a vowel. (cray∙on)
Rule 23: Use ‘oy’ at the end of
a word and ‘oi’ at the beginning and within words. (boy, coin)
Extra Rule: ‘oy’ may also be used at the end of a syllable if the following
syllable begins with a vowel. (voy∙age)
Rule 24: ‘tch’ is only used
after a single vowel. (match)
Exceptions: which, rich, bachelor, much, such, attach, sandwich
Use ‘ch’ in all other places:
Rule 25: ‘dge’ is usually used
at the end of a one-syllable word after a single vowel saying its first
sound. (bridge)
Use ‘ge’ in all other places:
Rule 26: Use ‘igh’ at the end of a word or when followed by a ‘t’. (high, light)
YOU CAN DO IT
For most of the remainder of Term 3, "You Can Do It" will finish off the "Let There Be Light" wisdom theme with:
Yrs P-2
- constructing pinwheels following the theme of the fable "The Wind and the Sun", where the moral they learn is "Gentle persuasion is better than brute force". The approximate 200 pinwheels will be spinning all together as YCDI's display at the October art exhibition.
- reading stories like "And Then the Wind Changed", looking at sayings that are quite humourous, e.g.: "If you make a face when the wind changes, it will stay that way!"
- learning the song "Turn on the Sun" , focussing on values.
Yrs 3-6
- learning and discussing common Wise Sayings and also those that are unique to the students' families. These sayings will be incorporated into the cartoon art which they are learning and will also become part of YCDI's contribution to the school art exhibition in October.
- The cartoon art will centre around activities that the students enjoy with their families, emphasising the value of families and their responsibility to contribute to the well-being of their family through practising values including obedience, helping and thankfulness.
