LEADERSHIP TEAM REPORT
Hi Everyone,
Term 1 is well underway. Last Thursday was day 8. This is the day schools submit their student enrolment numbers and are provided with their staffing numbers and funding.
We are pleased to advise that our numbers maintain our class structure of 17 classes, with our school having 401 students.
As we write this newsletter, many of our colleagues and students in Townsville have faced a very difficult start to the year. As you would be aware from the media coverage Townsville has been devastated by flooding over the last few weeks.
This Friday, 15th of February, Jones Hill State School will take part in a coordinated free dress day.
The purpose of this day is for all schools across Gympie to wear free dress and bring a donation to go towards the schools in Townsville. Students and families can donate a gold coin or any amount they would like, in support of Townsville.
Jones Hill State School has a proud tradition of supporting worthy community causes.
2019 is the final year of our 4 year plan. This year we will review our strategic plan and set the direction for the next 4 years.
Our improvement agenda has been focused on Reading, writing, numeracy and improving the number of students achieving in the Upper Two Bands of NAPLAN.
This year our focus remains:
- Improving every student’s reading achievement,
- Improving writing application for each student,
- Improving the numeracy of every student,
- Increasing the number of students achieving above year level expectations.
When having conversations with your student’s teacher, you can expect your child to have three goals: reading, numeracy and behaviour.
House Captains for 2019
Congratulations to our 2019 School Captains - Travis and Angel!
Container Exchange Program
As part of our Environmental Program we are participating in the Container Exchange Program.
All students are encouraged to bring empty cans and plastic bottles to school (no glass). All containers to the office please.
These containers will be sorted and taken to the Containers Exchange Depot. The P&C will receive 10c per container and these funds will be used to buy resources for the school.
Every student will also receive two Zero Waste tokens when they bring in their containers. They will go into a draw at the end of each term with some great prizes. This is a great way to be a Wildlife Warrior, reduce the waste in the Environment, help save our planet and support the school.
Swimming
P/1R (Year 1 only), 1B, 1S, 1/2H, 2S, 2W, 3MD and 3R started swimming last week.
The children did very well developing their swimming skills and Mr Littler was very impressed with how the children participated in the lessons.
Reminder - please pay your swimming invoice at the office.
Kind Regards,
James Watt - Principal
Stacey Seed – Deputy Principal

SWPBS NEWS
We have had an exciting start to the year with all of our students working diligently to learn routines and begin their curriculum work. The positive behaviour focus for the first two weeks has been Respect in the classroom and safety.
In all learning areas, students are working respectfully. This means that they are quietly working next to other students, raising their hands to answer or ask a question. It is wonderful to hear the lovely manners students are using with staff and classmates. Students are also displaying respect in different learning situations such as reading groups, computer lab times and working with teacher aides.
Safety has also been a focus for classes. Students have revised how to play safely on our ovals, under cover areas and playgrounds. The classes who are attending swimming lessons this term, have revised how to be safe on the bus and at the pool.

CHAPPY NEWS
Hi and welcome back to school for 2019! A big warm welcome from me to all of our new families, I hope I get to meet you sometime soon.
Starting school - for the first time, moving schools, or even just returning for a new year - can be overwhelming and sometimes hard to manage emotionally. Not only for students but for parents and guardians as well. It’s a change in routine and sometimes there can be changes in friendship groups and how students interact with each other. It can also be a really fun and exciting time and it helps us grow in our resilience and self-awareness more and more each day. Kids Matter have put together a short video and some resources to help families navigate through the start of school. This includes information sheets for parents and activity sheets for children to complete at home. While this resource is aimed at children starting school for the first time, there is some information which would be practical for anyone starting at a new school and for those who are struggling a little with coming back to school this year. Another resource is raising children’s tips about school and learning. This includes how to help students move schools effectively and to help with any issues that may arise from being at school.
https://www.kidsmatter.edu.au/families/starting-school
https://raisingchildren.net.au/school-age/school-learning
Both of these resources are great for encouraging conversations at home between you and your children about school. I am also at school to help with social emotional skills on Thursdays and Fridays.
I hope to see you around the school this term.
Chappy Caitlin

BRISBANE LIONS AFL VISIT
On Monday the 11th of February we had some football players from the Brisbane Lions AFL Club come and visit Jones Hill State School. The Brisbane Lions players came to promote the sport of AFL to the students and to give a leadership talk to our senior students. Students in grades 4-6 engaged in some fun ball games with the Brisbane Lions players and some even got autographs. The senior students found the leadership talk to be very informative, fun and inspiring. It was a great experience for students and staff alike.
