LEADERSHIP TEAM REPORT

Hi Everyone,

We would like to congratulate the students on the great work they are doing this term. We have been looking at book work and are happy to see that the effort, setting out and neatness is of a high standard.

University of the Sunshine Coast Science and Engineering Discovery Day Challenge

On Monday this week, our Year 6 students went on an excursion to the Gympie Pavilion for the University of the Sunshine Coast Science and Engineering Challenge. Students competed in experiments and different activities and became then became Gympie’s Champion School. Well done to all our Year 6 students!

Parent Teacher Interviews

Teachers will be sending home a letter to invite you to a Parent Teacher Interview to discuss your child’s progress. This is a good opportunity to see what your child has been learning, examples of their work, areas of success and things to improve. Please book a time as this is a great way to be involved in your child’s education and to support their learning.

Sport – District Nominations

If students are interested in nominating for District Trials for the following sports – Girls Rugby League, Boys Cricket, Girls Cricket please collect forms from the office. Students need to be born in 2009, 2008 or 2007 to nominate. All nominations need to be returned to the office as soon as possible.

Sports Day

The Jones Hill Sports Day is fast approaching. The children have been busy with sprint run offs and field event activities in preparation for the day.

Get your outfits ready for Sports Day – children need to wear their coloured sports shirt and hat. DORAN yellow, McPAUL blue and RADFORD red.

All lunch orders and money for the P&C sausage sizzle to the office by Friday 22nd March please.

Book Fair

Book Fair is a fun event, hands-on experience which offers a variety and selection of available books to our students. The theme this year is the BEACH – Catch the Readying Wave! Book Fair will be on 8:00am till 4:00pm all this week. Proceeds help build our library and classroom resources. EFTPOS is available.

Containers to the office please

Jones Hill students and families are definitely doing their part to recycle and keep our environment clean.

We have been receiving lots of containers which are sorted and sent for recycling. The P&C receives 10c per container which goes back into buying resources for the school. Keep sending in your containers – plastic bottles, cans, tetra packs, glass bottles (parents please deliver these to the office, not students). Great job, Jones Hill community!

Kind Regards,

James Watt – Principal
Stacey Seed – Deputy Principal

SWPBS NEWS

At Jones Hill State School it is an expectation that we use the values of Learning, Safety, Relationships and Respect. In Prep M we have been learning about Safety by practicing our evacuation and lock down procedures. These include:

  • Noticing the differences of the alarms
  • Listening carefully to adult instructions
  • Walking quickly to our safe place
  • Sitting quietly and waiting for instructions

We have been learning about Respect by exploring the expectations at parade. These include:

  • Transitioning quietly to and from the hall
  • Showing respect to our peers by sitting quietly
  • Using whole body listening to show respect to the people speaking on the stage

We have practiced thinking about what Safety and Respect look like, sound like and feel like through role play and pictorial representation.

CANBERRA TRIP 2020

From 21.06.20 to 26.06.20 Jones Hill School is planning a school excursion to Canberra. This excursion is only available to the students who are currently in year 4 and year 5. Our first Canberra Trip was in 2016 and our second one was in 2018 and both were highly successful with students coming away full of amazing memories and life-long impressions of Australis’s National Capital, Canberra.

The itinerary for the trip has not been finalised yet but will follow closely to last year’s visit. This trip is highly educational as well as a lot of fun. The students will have the opportunity to develop an understanding of Australia’s origins, political history and layers of government with visits to Parliament House, the War Memorial and the Royal Australian Mint. There will also be a chance to visit the National Gallery of Australia, Questacon, enjoy a trip to the snow and the Sydney Opera House, just to name a few.

Invoices were sent out last week to those who returned their expression of interest and permission letters will be sent home this week. Please indicate clearly if your child will be attending. If you no longer wish your child to attend, when you return the form your deposit invoice will be refunded. We will be providing more information at our parent evening later this term. At this meeting we will not only discuss the Canberra Trip itinerary and payment (approx. $1100) but our expectations of student behavior both before and on the trip. We will also take this opportunity to see if parents would like to fundraise for the excursion. This is a very exciting trip for our students and we are only too happy to discuss any questions you may have. Please drop into the office, email us on admin@jonehillss.eq.edu.au or phone on 54890555. Payment plans are easy to organise and should be started now.

GARDENING AT JONES HILL STATE SCHOOL

At Jones Hill School we have many gardens. Flower gardens, fruit gardens, rainforest gardens and native gardens. They take a lot of maintaining. If you can you volunteer your time and expertise to help out in our gardens, please let us know. Also, we’d love cutting of your favourite plants if you have any to share.

FOUND!

This beautiful photo was found in one of our library books "The Great Monster Hunt". We would love to find the owner. If it is a photo of one of your children it may be picked up from our school office.

BULLYING. NO WAY!

Friday 15th March is the National Day of Action Against Bullying and Violence. At Jones Hill State School we will be taking a stand together against bullying by wearing ORANGE on Friday 15th March. All children are encouraged to wear ORANGE to show their support.

At our school we aim to create a safe and supportive school community for everyone.

Sometimes, it can be difficult for parents or carers to know what to do when their child talks to them about bullying.

You are an important part of our work to prevent bullying and to respond effectively if it happens. Stopping bullying involves everyone.

If your child talks to you about bullying:

  1. Listen calmly and get the full story. Your calm response is important to allow your child to tell you all about the situation. After they’ve told you their story, ask questions to get more details if you need to: who, what, where, when. Although you may feel some strong emotions about your child’s experience, try to keep calm to avoid more distress to your child.
  2. Reassure your child they are not to blame. Many children blame themselves and this may make them feel even worse. You could say things like, ‘That sounds really hard to deal with. No one should have to put up with that.’ or ‘I’m so glad you told me. You should be able to feel safe at school; that’s not fair at all’.
  3. Ask your child what they want to do and what they want you to do. A critical part of your response is to avoid jumping in to solve the problem. While it is natural to want to protect your child, helping them to find their own solution is a better option. It helps them feel they have some power in the situation.
  4. Visit www.bullyingnoway.gov.au to find some strategies. The website has tips and ideas for different bullying situations. One idea is to practise strategies at home to help your child feel more confident.
  5. Contact the school. Your child may be reluctant for you to do this, so discuss the idea and reassure them that the school would want to know and is able to help. Make an appointment to meet with your child’s teacher and, if you need to, ask to talk with the principal. Contact the school immediately if you have a concern about your child’s safety.
  6. Check in regularly with your child. Keep the conversation going. It can take time to resolve issues, so check in regularly with your child about their experiences and their feelings. Your ongoing support is important.

If you are looking for support for yourself to deal with a bullying situation, you will find ideas on the Bullying. No Way! website for parents.

http://www.bullyingnoway.gov.au/

Let’s take a stand together and show that Jones Hill SS children and parents are against bullying and violence.

NEW SENIOR PLAYGROUND

The senior playground is finally finished and will be open any day now. We are just waiting to make sure that the turf has settled before we start playing in the new area. Once again, a huge thank you to our wonderful P&C for helping us make this project happen. All the hard work fundraising has certainly paid off.

FROM THE TUCKSHOP

Hello everyone!

Can you believe its midterm already, crazy!

We love chocolate and with Easter fast approaching we thought it would be great fun to do an Easter colour in competition! Colouring pages will be coming home this week, so keep an eye out. Please return them to the tuckshop where we will hang them on display for everyone to see your Child’s amazing work and at the end of term, two students per grade will be announced at parade where they will receive their prize!

NEW CAMP AUSTRALIA CO-ORDINATOR

G’day Parents/Caregivers of Jones Hill State School! Jules here your OSHC Co-Ordinator with some news… First of all a huge warm welcome to Jessica, who has come on board to work alongside me, I am very grateful to have her here, we make a dynamic duo and together we are building your OSHC Service into something amazing for your children and the Jones Hill State School community. Jessica has a beautiful daughter, in Grade 1, so is already a part of the School community and a familiar face.

We have been looking at our program, and in line with the children’s interests, running a child centred program and our philosophy of extending children’s learning, we have secured an area for gardening, planting seeds, growing veggies, feeding the chickens etc ... This is to teach your children the interdependence between the earth, weather, animals and humans (big thank you to Phil, our awesome Groundsman for helping us with this).

We are also cooking healthy food options every Wednesday and Friday as part of Camp Australia’s Healthy Eating Program, which helps children have a positive relationship with food and fuel for their growing bodies.

We would like to say a massive thank you to Ray, who runs the Tuesday night Rhee Taekwon-Do at 6:00pm in the hall at the School (following after school care). He came in on Wednesday 6th of March and did a very interactive session with our children, which taught them basic self-defence, confidence building and talked about dealing with bullies, which is completely in line with our wear Orange Anti-Bully day next Friday and our community ethics here at Jones Hill State School. It was a fantastic hit with the children who all engaged, participated and most of all had fun while learning valuable life skills.

We have a fantastic promotion at the moment ..... If you register your child for OSHC care before the end of Term 1, you get your first day FREE!! So if this is something you’ve been thinking about doing, why not give us a go, at no cost to you, for your child’s first session!!

Talking of money, did you all know that OSHC care is also subject to the Child Care Subsidy?? When you register online at the website below, you will be prompted to provide your child’s CRN number, Camp Australia then processes your registration and you will get an email from MyGov to approve your registration with us, and that’s it! Too easy!!

http://www.campaustralia.com.au/

Well that’s it for now folks. Please pop in to see Jess and myself anytime between 6:30-9:00am and 2:30-6:00pm, we would love to see you and get any feedback you have, to ensure our service absolutely resonates with your expectations and the Jones Hill State School community.

See you around School!!!
