LEADERSHIP TEAM REPORT
Hi Everyone,
I would like to start by congratulating our year 6 students who took part in the High Ropes Course on Monday at Gympie East. They demonstrated great teamwork and persistence while challenging themselves, supporting each other and working through the heat!

This was an opportunity for the students to participate in leadership and team building activities, developing their confidence and reaching their personal goals. We were very impressed with the way the children supported each other, faced the challenges, worked together and communicated effectively. Thank you to our parents, Mrs Hanson and
Mr Lorensen, whose help with the day was greatly appreciated. A fantastic day was had by all!
Prep refurbishment
The PM classroom and prep playground has begun its $170 000 upgrade.
These works are scheduled to be completed for the start of next term. Our prep students will come back to an extended eating area, new picnic tables, new soft fall and fences.
PM will return to a newly painted room, upgraded toilets and new cabinetry.
Parent Teacher Interviews
Teachers will be sending home a letter to invite you to a Parent Teacher Interview to discuss your child’s progress. This is a good opportunity to see what your child has been learning, examples of their work, areas of success and things to improve. Please book a time as this is a great way to be involved in your child’s education and to support their learning.
Epilepsy Day
Friday the 29th of March this week is National Epilepsy Day and Jones Hill State School is showing their support by dressing in purple and raising money for Epilepsy awareness. Can all students please dress in sun safe clothing for the day with enclosed shoes and donating a gold coin to the cause.
Easter Bonnet Parade
It’s time to get ready for the year 1 and 2 Easter Bonnet Parade to be held on Thursday April 4, at 9am, in the school hall. It is time for students, with a little help from parents, to start creating a wonderful Easter bonnet (hat). Parents, Grandparents and visitors are all welcome to come and join in the fun.

NAPLAN
On Tuesday 14, Wednesday 15 and Thursday 16 May, students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 will take part in NAPLAN - National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy.
Skills that will be tested include, reading, writing, spelling, grammar and punctuation, and numeracy. These tests are completed here at school and are considered just another part of the curriculum.
It is important for you and your child to know that NAPLAN is not a pass/fail test. It simply looks at what level students are achieving in literacy and numeracy against National Standards and compares with students throughout Australia. The data is used to improve programs and planning for individual students.
The children have been well prepared for the exams and need not stress about the day. It is imperative that the children be present on the day. Students who are not participating on the day will be catered for with alternative arrangements, at school.
More information is available on the NAP website below
http://www.nap.edu.au/
Sports Day
The Jones Hill Sports Day is fast approaching. The children have been busy with sprint run offs and field event activities in preparation for the day.
Get your outfits ready for Sports Day – children need to wear their coloured sports shirt and hat. DORAN yellow, McPAUL blue and RADFORD red.
Sports day programs will go on sale for $2.00 from Monday 1st of April at the office.
ANZAC Day Dawn Service
Students in years 4-6 are invited to participate in this Year’s ANZAC Dawn Service. Staff and students will be meeting in front of the Gympie RSL on Mary Street for the Dawn Service at 4.30am. Just before 5.00am the students will march from Mary St to the Memorial gates for the Dawn Service. Parents are welcome to join us.
Students are asked to wear full school uniform and leadership badges if they have one and can be collected from Reef Street in the area adjacent to the memorial gates at the conclusion of the service.
ANZAC Day Mary Street Parade
Jones Hill State School has a proud tradition of strongly supporting the ANZAC day march. Students in Prep to Year 6 are invited to participate in the march. Students and teachers will gather on the Mary Street footpath outside the Good Price Pharmacy (orange building) next to office national at 10.00am.
The parade commences along Mary Street at 10.30am following the veterans and other participants. Parents can collect their children immediately after the march in Memorial Park between Reef Street and River Road.
We encourage all students, especially our school leaders to represent our school at the March. Students must be in full school uniform including at hat and drink bottle as it gets quite hot waiting to march.
Containers to the office please
Jones Hill students and families are definitely doing their part to recycle and keep our environment clean.
We have been receiving lots of containers which are sorted and sent for recycling. The P&C receives 10c per container which goes back into buying resources for the school. Keep sending in your containers – plastic bottles, cans, tetra packs, glass bottles (parents please deliver these to the office, not students). Great job, Jones Hill community!
Our total amount of money raised to date is $195.00!
Kind Regards,
James Watt

SWPBS NEWS
In week 7 we had a focus on how to be respectful, safe, a good learner and have good relationships in the Library. Classes practised how to transition to the library, wait lined up at the yellow line and transition into the library to place their books in to be returned, walk to the computer lab or to use other areas of the library. Classes practised how to borrow books, show respect to staff and students and how to treat the books, shelves, chairs and other equipment with respect. What a wonderful effort all students and staff are putting into keeping our library an enjoyable learning space for all.
In week 8 classes focused on reducing disruptions to learning. Students can reduce disruptions by:
- Working quietly
- Raising hands to ask a question
- Staying in seats
- Focusing on improving their own work
- Actively listening and participating in lessons
- By thinking of others and how our actions can stop them from learning
What a wonderful sight it is to see all of our classes working hard and being respectful of others.

BOOK FAIR – “RIDE THE READING WAVE”
Our school library was stoked to host the “Ride The Reading Wave” Book Fair last week. We had a tremendous response from so many students, parents, carers and staff who paddled in to enjoy the latest wave of book titles on offer. We also received a visit from the Book Fair mascot, Geronimo. A massive thank-you to everyone who supported our Book Fair. Your generosity provides our library with the opportunity to purchase more resources to increase the swell of book titles on offer for students to borrow and continue catching the reading wave to literacy.
Kind regards
Ann Walters
Librarian

LOST PROPERTY
All lost property will be taken down to the hall before parade this Friday for collection. We have taken out all the items that have names on them and sent them home with students. All other lost items that have not have been claimed by the end of this term will be taken to a local charity.
CANBERRA TRIP 2020
We have had a great response to the students wanting to attend the Canberra Trip in 2020, with over 90 students expressing interest. There will be an information evening, including a fundraising meeting on Tuesday 30 April, at 5:30pm in the school library to discuss the Canberra trip scheduled for 21.06.2020 to 26.06.2020. Most of the discussion will be around the itinerary, accommodation, travel, behaviour expectations and then watch a photo presentation of last year’s trip. This is a great opportunity for parents to ask questions and discuss fundraising ideas. We have a record number of students wanting to attend so excitement is very high.
FROM THE TUCKSHOP
OMG, I can’t believe it’s almost the end of term 1! What fantastic term it has been! Today was the last day to enter into the Easter colouring in competition and we are loving all the bright and beautiful pictures hanging out the front of the canteen. The lovely admin ladies are certainly going to have a tough time picking the winners! Good luck to everyone who entered! Also, along with the colour in completion we will be announcing the winner of the “guessing jar” on parade as well. Again good luck! Quick reminder that tuckshop will NOT be open on the last Friday of school (5th April) due to sports day but will run as normal every other day. Lastly a big shout out to our amazing school community for your support and a big thank you to our wonderful volunteers. We couldn’t of done it without you! We wish you all a happy and safe Easter break. See you next term.

NEW CAMP AUSTRALIA CO-ORDINATOR
G’day Parents/Caregivers!
Hope this finds you all well and looking forward to some rain and a break from the hot weather that’s coming this week!
Well we have been busy bees in OSHC our gardening and cooking days are going great guns. So far we have planted carrots, peas and beans in our garden and on our cooking days we have made carrot and sultana muffins, Singapore noodles, hummus, bliss balls and corn fritters. This week its cheese & vegemite scrolls. Yummy!
Other activities we have been doing are Ping Pong on our ping pong tables, Basketball using our fantastic basketball hoop, lots of different types of arts and crafts including water colours using large pipettes, collage, clay modelling, play dough, painting, chalk drawing and paddle pop box making to name a few. Construction has been very popular using our marble run, connecting straws and Lego. One of the favourite things our group loves to do is create dramatic play experiences. Recently we have had a sushi restaurant, shop and a classroom! It’s so much fun watching children transfer and adapt what they have learned from one context to another. We also incorporate World and National Days into our Program. Last week we did activities for World Frog Day, Harmony Day and World Water Day, by doing this it helps children be connected with and contribute to their World.
We have had some new children join OSHC, and we love seeing the new faces, and the diversity it adds to our awesome group. Remember, if you book before the end of term one, the first session is free.
I have been asked lots about Vacation Care, and this is something we can definitely provide, once our numbers grow. It would be fantastic to be able to run this as it gives the children consistency during school term times and school holiday times. We have everything crossed!
Just one last thing, if any of you have anything lying around that you think we could use as resources, please don’t hesitate to bring them in. We love recyclable materials here at OSHC!!
That’s it for now folks. As always if you require any further information, please pop in to the Hall to see us.
Bye for now!
Jules & Jess
Jones Hill State School OSHC Co-ordinator
