LEADERSHIP TEAM REPORT

Hi Everyone,

Welcome back to the start of term 2. I hope you have had a safe and relaxing Easter break.

Congratulations to all of our students who took part in the sports carnival last term. It was a great day with all our students getting in and having a go.

I would also like to thank our staff for their organisation and ensuring our students had a great day. It was also fantastic to see the great family support during the day.

Facilities Update:

Our prep upgrade has been progressing well and we look like being able to move our PM students back into their room next week.

The upgrade to the playground is looking great. The eating area has been extended with additional seating. A new retaining wall around the playground has been completed with stairs, fencing and new soft fall. The play area will be ready to open for the start of next week also.

The upper school covered area has received a new paint job and is looking fresh.

Our grounds have also received some much needed tree trimming and some dangerous trees removed.

Some of our dedicated students will be assisting Mr Rentz with spreading mulch around the gardens over the coming weeks.

NAPLAN

On Tuesday 14, Wednesday 15 and Thursday 16 May, students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 will take part in NAPLAN - National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy.

Skills that will be tested include, reading, writing, spelling, grammar and punctuation, and numeracy. These tests are completed here at school and are considered just another part of the curriculum.

It is important for you and your child to know that NAPLAN is not a pass/fail test. It simply looks at what level students are achieving in literacy and numeracy against National Standards and compares with students throughout Australia. The data is used to improve programs and planning for individual students.

The children have been well prepared for the exams and need not stress about the day. It is imperative that the children be present on the day. Students who are not participating on the day will be catered for with alternative arrangements, at school.

More information is available on the NAP website

ANZAC Day Dawn Service

Students in years 4-6 are invited to participate in this Year’s ANZAC Dawn Service. Staff and students will be meeting in front of the Gympie RSL on Mary Street for the Dawn Service at 4.30am. Just before 5.00am the students will march from Mary St to the Memorial gates for the Dawn Service. Parents are welcome to join us.

Students are asked to wear full school uniform and leadership badges if they have one.

After the parade students can be collected from Reef Street in the area adjacent to the memorial gates at the conclusion of the service.

ANZAC Day Mary Street Parade

Jones Hill State School has a proud tradition of strongly supporting the ANZAC day march. Students in Prep to Year 6 are invited to participate in the march. Students and teachers will gather on the Mary Street footpath outside the Good Price Pharmacy (orange building) next to office national at 10.00am.

The parade commences along Mary Street at 10.30am following the veterans and other participants. Parents can collect their children immediately after the march in Memorial Park between Reef Street and River Road.

We encourage all students, especially our school leaders to represent our school at the March. Students must be in full school uniform including at hat and drink bottle as it gets quite hot.

ANZAC Parade

This morning seven of our school’s Senior Leaders travelled to Brisbane to attend the ANZAC Students’ Commemoration Service. This is an annual service for students in South East Queensland and enables student to participate in an act to recognise commemoration of the sacrifices of so many Australian and New Zealand men and women over the past century. The student’s all enjoyed the morning and came away with a better understanding of the Spirit of ANZAC and the relevance of this in the development of our nation.

Four Year 6 leaders Liliana, Rochelle, Alex and Marcus stepped up to lead the School’s ANZAC day commemorative service. During the service Mr Brian Trickey from the Gympie RSL Sub-branch spoke on the service women performed in past campaigns and in the defence forces today.

Canberra

We have had a great response to the students wanting to attend the Canberra Trip in 2020, with over 90 students expressing interest.

We are holding a parent information session on Tuesday 30 April at 5.30pm in the library.

This will be a chance to look at the draft itinerary, see a photo presentation of last years trip and ask any questions you may have about your child attending the trip.

Cross-Country

The children competed in their races for Doran, McPaul and Radford. They encouraged each other and showed great school spirit.

Containers to the office please

Jones Hill State School families and community members have been fantastic at supporting our efforts to keep the environment clean and rubbish free!

We appreciate all your support. Please send in your containers to the JONES HILL State School OFFICE – plastic bottles, cans, tetra packs, glass bottles (parents please deliver these to the office, not students).

Great job, Jones Hill community!

RELAY FOR LIFE

Each year Jones Hill School has a team of year 6 students take part in Gympie’s Relay for Life. This year we have decided to extend the invitation to all students. Relay for Life is a community fundraising challenge raising vital funds to support cancer patients and the Cancer Council.

Although the event runs overnight (3pm Saturday October 26 to 9am Sunday October 27) the students will only participate from 3pm to 7:30pm on the Saturday. Fundraising events will be held at the school including our yearly 5 cent class challenge in August. Students may also ask for sponsorship donations from family and friends.

If you think your child would like to represent the school at this event please contact Mrs Hurren by May 3 (email jhurr5@eq.edu.au) . Further information will be sent home with students to explain registration (including cost) and details of the event. Please note students from Prep to Year 3 will require a parent or guardian to supervise them on the day.
