LEADERSHIP TEAM REPORT

Hi Everyone,

The cold weather has started to bite this week as temperatures have dropped. There are a growing number of jumpers in the lost property outside the office. Please ensure you name all items. If you have named them please check the name can still be read.

It has been a very busy term so far as we head towards report cards going home. I would like to congratulate the P&C for a very successful Trivia night last Friday. Despite the cool weather it was very successful. Thanks also to our staff who provided the child care.

I will be taking some leave for the rest of the term as we embark on a family trip to Cape York. Hopefully the cyclones and water have started to disperse!

Stacey will step up as Acting Principal for the rest of the term.

I would like to take this opportunity to wish all our families a very safe and enjoyable holiday.

Woolworths Earn and Learn

Do you shop at Woolworths? Don’t forget to collect the Earn and Learn stickers for our school. In the past few years this program has provided many free items across many subjects to enhance the learning experiences of our students. Sheets are available from the Jones Hill office for you to fill with stickers. These sheets are then placed in the green box in front of our reception desk.

STARLAB EDUCATION

The year 1, 3, 5 and 6 classes attended a very special science learning experience today. Starlab Education provided an inspiring astronomy and earth science program, where presenters had a giant inflatable Cosmodome Science Theatre and Planetarium set up in the hall for our students to interact with exciting full dome shows with imagery surrounding the viewer. The students really enjoyed these activities and were given the opportunity to explore Science in a very engaging and interactive way.

Starlab Education is linked to current curriculum for years 1, 3, 5 and 6 covering topics about the night sky, weather, Earth’s rotation causing day & night, shadows, the lunar cycle, eclipses, reason for seasons, tides, our solar system and planetary orbits. Lifecycle of stars, space exploration and the search for life, living in extreme environments of Antarctica, Earth’s history and structure are also topics included in the program.

SWPBS NEWS

In week 9 of this term classes will be discussing the following Jones Hill State School behaviour expectation – Learning in the classroom setting. Teachers and students will be discussing the following statements -

What does it mean to -

  • be an active listener?
  • take pride in personal effort?
  • follow directions and classroom rules?

These discussions are to be linked to our behaviour expectations that are part of our school’s behaviour achievement levels.

In week 10 the focus will be on Respect and Relationships in the playground.

Discussions and activities will focus on respecting school property and equipment, the rights of others and playing by the rules, using respectful language, and demonstrating respectful actions. Relationship topics to be covered will be, playing fairly, including others, accepting differences, learning to get on, and using problem-solving skills to solve playground issues.

MATHEMATICS ROCKS

WHAT is a fact family?

*An addition and subtraction fact family consists of number sentences created using three numbers. The fact family shows the relationships between the numbers in it.

6+7=13

7+6=13

13=6+7

13=7+6

13-7=6

13-6=7

6=13-7

7=13-6

6+7=13

7+6=13

13=6+7

13=7+6

13-7=6

13-6=7

6=13-7

7=13-6

(Eight different number sentences all using the same three numbers, that’s a fact family!)

*Likewise, we can also bring numbers together with multiplication and division.

5x9=45

9x5=45

45=5x9

45=9x5

45÷5=9

45÷9=5

5=45÷9

9=45÷5

5x9=45

9x5=45

45=5x9

45=9x5

45÷5=9

45÷9=5

5=45÷9

9=45÷5

WHY do we use fact families?

Using fact families for inverse relationships ensures our students can think flexibly and don’t have to learn every fact individually. The learning will require students to link addition and subtraction, link repeated addition to multiplication, link multiplication to division.

HOW do we learn fact families?

They are often represented with structured materials, including basic fact grids, fact family triangles and part-part-whole models. See below.

Please click on the link below and try these games at home.

READERS’ CUP NEWS

Readers’ Cup competitions challenge students to read widely, work collaboratively in a team and continue developing a love of reading. It allows readers to compete at a regional and state level similar to sporting competitions and to meet other students with an equal passion for books.

Last Wednesday the Jones Hill Juggernauts Readers’ Cup Team competed in the Sunshine Coast Regional final along with 30 other schools. Our readers, Alice, Georgie, Kate and Lily represented Jones Hill with great pride and spirit. Thanks to all students and their families for getting involved in this longstanding competition. Our teammates were amazed to see that Peter Carnavas, the author of The Elephant, was the quizmaster for the event. Peter entertained and inspired the students throughout the morning and helped to make the competition a lot of fun.

If upper school students would like to read any of the books that the team has read this year and last year, multiple copies are available for borrowing in our school library.

The ANZAC Violin – Jennifer Beck - Picture Book

MEET OUR TEACHERS

Michelle Walker – Teacher (5MW)

Hi! My name is Michelle Walker and I am super excited to be part of the amazing teaching team at Jones Hill State School. I live in Gympie with my two sons and my Kelpie called ‘Mango’. My favourite things to do include: Heading to the beach, roller-skating at Skate Land with my sons, cooking, going to the movies, playing board games, and going out for sushi.

I am very passionate about teaching and hope to provide students with lessons that are engaging and meaningful. I also hope to instill a life-long love of learning! I love working here at Jones Hill and cannot wait to meet more of the parents and students that make up this great school community!

I look forward to a great year together!

RELAY FOR LIFE

Each year Jones Hill School has a team of Year 6 students take part in Gympie’s Relay for Life. It’s not too late to join our year 6 Jones Hill School Relay for Life team. This year we have decided to extend the invitation to all students. Relay for Life is a community fundraising challenge raising vital funds to support cancer patients and the Cancer Council.

Although the event runs overnight (3pm Saturday October 26 to 9am Sunday October 27) the students will only participate from 3pm to 7:30pm on the Saturday. Fundraising events will be held at the school including our yearly 5 cent class challenge in August. Students may also ask for sponsorship donations from family and friends.

If you think your child would like to represent the school at this event please contact Mrs Hurren as soon as possible (email jhurr5@eq.edu.au ). Further information will be sent home with students to explain registration (including cost) and details of the event. Please note students from Prep to Year 3 will require a parent or guardian to supervise them on the day.

CAMP AUSTRALIA

Hey everyone, Jess and Jules here from Out of School Hours Care. Hope this newsletter finds you all well.

National Reconciliation Week

We had a great time last week learning about Indigenous cultures. The children particularly loved painting didgeridoos and making sounds with them, our yarning circle, going walkabout and making aboriginal footprint tracks and learning interesting facts about Uluru. Thank you to all those children who participated in this wonderful week of cultural learning.

So what’s happening this week?

First of all we are introducing our new Lego sets to the children as we know they will love this favourite classic. Also we will be learning about animals and caring for them in our Pop Up Vets program. This is based on the huge interest the children are showing in animals and after completing their child profile forms, most of them would like to be vets when they grow up. Learning about caring for animals links to community ethics and we think this is a great thing to teach our children.

If anyone has any resources that we could utilise in our Pop Up Vets program, such as old plastic syringes, bandages, stethoscope, cuddly animals etc, please can you donate them to us.

Please remember its Pyjama Day on Friday and to send your children to school in their PJs. We will be wearing our awesome Onesies here at before & after school care!

A massive thank you

Chace’s Mum, Peta, brought a wonderful PJ MASKS Jigsaw pack for us, and the children are thoroughly enjoying working together (and independently) to solve all the eight puzzles. It has been very popular and the kids love it. We are very grateful to Peta and Chace for their present to us - thank you!

Learning Goals

Are there any learning goals you have for your child this year? If you do, we can help with achieving them. The goal/s could be in any development area, for example, social/emotional, creativity, cognitive, physical, communication etc. Please feel free to talk to us, as we can write learning goals into our program. Remember we are an extension of your child’s learning journey and we integrate the learning in different ways, usually through play based experiences.

Anyway that’s all for now! Please don’t hesitate to pop in and see us in the Hall between 6:30am - 9:00am and 2:30pm – 6:00pm for all your Out of School Hours Care needs. Until next newsletter, take care.
