Principal's Report

Hi Everyone,

Welcome back to term 4. I hope you have had a restful break.

Some staffing updates as we begin the term. Miss Rozynski has received a transfer to Cloncurry and will return to us in three years. We wish Miss Rozynski well and will miss her around Jones Hill School next year.

Next year we will welcome two new teachers to Jones Hill, Mrs Natasha Hooklyn and Mrs Loretta Levis. We look forward to meeting them and welcoming them to our school next year.

Congratulations to Mr Littler and the Broncos Challenge team who competed last term. Our team made it to the semi-final where they were defeated by only one point.

Late last term our school leaders took part in the Child Protection Walk through Mary Street. Well done to our leaders who represented our school so well for such a great cause.

During the last week of term 3 we hosted renowned bush poet Noel Stallard who worked with our 4/5 and year 5 classes. The students constructed a poem about the school and the completed is published further down in this newsletter. Well done to the students who have put such great effort into the poem.

I am pleased to announce we have been successful in gaining a supervised crossing position for McIntosh Creek Road to begin next term. Interviews and appointments of the supervisors have been made and we look forward to the beginning of a safer crossing.

Congratulations to the students who reached the Green Day benchmarks of 95% attendance and green light behaviour. We had 133 students attended the afternoon activities.

On our last parade we presented our Behaviour level ribbons to students who have moved up a level. Congratulations to those students and their families.

This term I will be sending information home to students in years 4 and 5 about a Canberra trip next year. This expression of interest is to gauge support to run this camp around July next year. Keep an eye out for more information.

The 2016 prep enrolments continue to be strong with 49 students currently on our list. If you know of students attending prep next year who have not put their name down yet, please encourage them to make contact to secure a place.

Regards,
James Watt
Principal

Deputy Principal's Report

Welcome back to all of our families. Last term I enjoyed being the Acting Deputy Principal while Mrs Grogan was on long service leave. At the end of term 3 many of our students were involved in various events.

Kids Teaching Kids

The 4/5W and 5N classes went to the Kids Teaching Kids Day at the Mary Valley College. This was part of the Sustainability Program where children teach each other about the environment, recycling and innovative ways to help preserve our world. Our 4/5W students showed other school children how to make bird feeders. The 5N students sampled bush tucker, damper and made a bee box. The children looked great in their Kids Teaching Kids t-shirts and were wonderful ambassadors for our school and the environment!

Robotics Challenge

Mr Callaghan and the Robotics club ventured to Maryborough for the Robotics Challenge. They made and programmed their robots, enjoyed competing against other schools and learned about technology, problem solving and how to be creative to get the best out of their robots. Mr Callaghan was very proud of the Jones Hill SS team and we have some future engineers and scientists in our school! A special mention goes to the parents and Mr Callaghan for the support and commitment they have shown to provide our students with such a wonderful experience.

Broncos Challenge

Mr Littler and the Rugby League team attended the Broncos Challenge at Albert Park. They had a fantastic day winning the first 4 games! The boys then competed in the Semi Final where they lost by only one try. They scored a total of 21 tries for the day! Levi Blount was Best and Fairest and all of the team need to be congratulated on their outstanding effort. A huge thank you goes to Mr Greg Pountney who has been coming to school to train the boys and attended the Broncos Challenge day with Mr Littler. Mr Littler was very proud of the boys and it was an extremely exciting day!

Prep Art Gallery Afternoon

As part of their work in Art, the prep children from PCM and PJM invited parents to their very own Art Gallery. After their visit to the Gympie Art Gallery earlier in the term, the children have become artists and have been busy creating masterpieces! Mr Watt and I visited the Prep Art Gallery where the children had Kandinsky Circles, Jackson Pollock like originals, Gustav Klimt creations, Piet Mondrian compositions with black vertical and horizontal lines and mud paintings inspired by I'm a Dirty Dinosaur. The children gave their parents a tour of the gallery and then showed them how to make these creations. What a great job from our prep students and teachers. We thoroughly enjoyed the Art Gallery tour.

Premier's Reading Challenge

The Premier's Reading Challenge has now concluded. Well done to all of the children who successfully completed the challenge. Some students read more than the goal of 15 or 20 books. Every student who completed the challenge will receive a certificate in term 4. I encourage all students to continue their reading and enjoy the many adventures you can find in the pages of a book.

Spring Festival

Don't forget our Spring Festival is on this Friday 9th of October, the day will start with a free breakfast with radio personalities Al and Nugget from 6.00 am. This will be followed by many activities for all the family and friends. We are looking forward to the dad's cooking skills and mum's construction prowess! Students are encouraged to design and wear their spring hat, enter the recyclable fashion parade. They can bring along their cooking, lego constructions, flower arrangements and enter the many other categories on the day. Make sure all competition entries are in by Thursday. Please deliver to the hall or office. It's going to be a great day, come celebrate spring and enjoy all the fun. Thank you to all our sponsors for their valuable support and welcome to our latest sponsor Cooloola Milk. This day could not go ahead without any of you.

Kind Regards,

Robotics Club News

On Saturday September 12 Angus P, Hayden B, Harry D and Aidan W represented Jones Hill State School at the Maryborough Technology Challenge. Once again I was very proud of our robotics students giving up their own time to represent the school. These students and others have been working on the robots in their own time for over a term. They met the challenge with maturity, patience and a good sense of humour and fun. The challenge is a high pressure situation that requires the students to problem solve and constantly tweak their programing over about a 5 hour period. We didn't place anywhere this year but that's not really the aim of the competition, although the students probably wouldn't agree with me there. A big thank you to the parents who came along your time was much appreciated. A special mention to April G who worked hard but wasn't able to make it due to a broken thumb.

Regards, Rob Callaghan
