Principal's Report

We are now in our fifth week of our supervised crossing. It is great to see students and parents making use of this new service. There has also been a notable reduction in the speed of traffic through the crossing. Please continue to promote the safe use of the crossing with your children. Congratulations again go to our P&C who have supported us in advocating for these changes.

I was pleased last week to receive a letter from the state government advising us that we have also been successful in lobbying for the flashing 40 speed limit signs to go in place of the current signs. The timeline on installation is still to be decided, however this is another great step in the safety of our students. The crossing is also to receive some blister curbing. We hope to have updates in the near future.

Currently we are finalising our staffing for 2016 and will begin forming classes over the next few weeks.

If you are collecting your child from school before the end of the day please ensure you go to the office first and sign them out. The office staff will give you a receipt which teachers will request on departure. Alternatively students can be sent to the office to meet you and then signed out on your arrival.

Over the last two weeks we have been undergoing some minor works to upgrade the speed of the school internet. The cables have been laid and connected. We are in the process of having Telstra finalise the connection and we should be able to enjoy faster speeds for students logging onto the system soon.

Regards,

James Watt

Day for Daniel Awareness

On Friday students from Jones Hill raised awareness for annual The Day for Daniel initiative. This is a National Day of Action to raise awareness of child safety, protection and harm prevention. It is about educating children and adults about keeping kids safe through child safety and protection initiatives. It aims to help empower our children to Recognise, React and Report if they feel something is not right. Mrs Zerner is particularly proud of the students from 5N and the leadership skills they demonstrated. They all took part in visiting the lower grades and led students through a short activity to raise safety awareness. The upper grades heard a talk from Mr Gresham, from Gympie Rhee Tae Kwon Do, about being safety aware.

Students wore red for a gold coin donation and 5N ran a cupcake stall to raise funds for the Daniel Morcombe foundation. Thanks to everyone who donated cupcakes, bought cupcakes and wore red. The day was a great success and we raised over $744 for the foundation to provide free safety and education material for schools and families.

World Teachers' Day Friday 30 October

World Teachers' Day was the perfect opportunity to acknowledge our teachers and say thank you for all their dedication and hard work they put into our students, classrooms and our school community. The teachers celebrated with a special cake for morning tea and were presented with badges which said 'Teachers make all the difference!' We also presented the teachers with badges that said, 'Teachers inspire the dreams of tomorrow' and this sums up very nicely how committed and caring the teachers are at Jones Hill School each and every day.

P&C Halloween Disco

Last Friday night the P&C held a Halloween disco in the hall. The night was greatly enjoyed by all those who attended and the behaviour of the students was exemplary! Thank you to all those who volunteered their time, it was greatly appreciated. Without you and your precious time, these events would not be possible.

Relay for Life

On Saturday 24 October, Jones Hill Schools staff and students once again participated in our Relay for Life team event which has the purpose of raising funds and awareness for the cancer council. A big thank you to Jennifer Hurren for heading up the Jones Hill team and organising the fundraising and the walk. This year the two Jones Hill teams raised $2800. Team members for 2015 were students Luke V, Josh L, Cadie W, Tiana H, Ella T, Libby S, Hayden B, Andrew V, Luke F, Will T, Tegan K, Mia W, Alexandria W and Zanthe F. The students were supported during the afternoon by staff members James Watt, Helen Grogan and Jodie Kyte. Overnight walkers were staff members Casey Mansfield, Katrina Beyer, Tanya O'Hanlon, Kelly Rozynski, Ann Walters and Jennifer Hurren. The final members of the team were members of Mrs Hurren's family Greg, Jenelle, Elissa and Joyce Irvine and friend Katrina Walker. Thank you to all those in the Jones Hill Dream Team, who participated in this important event and raised funds by challenging themselves to walk around the One Mile Oval from Saturday afternoon to Sunday morning. There were many fun activities for everyone to participate in as well as the survivors walk and a very moving candle light memorial ceremony. Thank you once again to all involved in this very important event.
