LEADERSHIP TEAM REPORT
As we near the end of the term and head into term 3, we have some staff changes. We farewell Sarah Middleton who has been a valued member of the Jones Hill SS team. Sarah will be finishing at the end of the term with the 4N class. We wish her well on her next venture, travelling overseas to Canada. The 4N class will welcome Renee Berry as their teacher. Renee has already been visiting our school to meet the students and plan with Sarah which will allow for a smooth transition next term.
We will also be welcoming back Sally Koenig (formally Sally Rogers), who will be two days a week in the Learning Support role.
Mr Watt and his family have headed of for their Cape York trip. Mr Watt will be away for the rest of the term and we hope they have a very enjoyable holiday. We look forward to hearing about their adventures!
Maths Resources
The school has purchased maths resources for every classroom. This will allow the students to have materials for hands on learning and consolidation of mathematics concepts, particularly in number. This has been a huge undertaking and has been led by our HOC, Mrs Levis and our Library Teacher Aide, Mrs Walters. Mrs Levis and Mrs Walters were fortunate to have a very dedicated group of volunteers (parents, grandparents, carers, teachers, staff and students) who spent hours making resources and putting them into class sets. Your time and efforts are greatly appreciated. Thank you to Mrs Levis, Mrs Walters and all their helpers.
Teddy Bears’ Play Day
Last week we met some of the children who will be attending Prep in 2020 at the Prep Teddy Bears’ Play Day. The children were very excited to come to Jones Hill school to meet the teachers and participate in activities including obstacle course, teddy bear threading, painting, play dough, making fruit kebabs, sand pit play and parachute games. The children had a great time and this is a wonderful opportunity for them to become familiar with the school environment and transition into Prep.

SWPBS NEWS
Last week in 3MD we focussed on building positive, respectful relationships in the classroom. We discussed the importance of good relationships so that every student can learn. In the classroom, positive relationships means:
- Co-operating
- Accepting differences, strengths, challenges
- Helping others
- Participating
- Listening
- Recognising rights and responsibilities
We practised this during our literacy activity ‘Read to Someone’. Students were keen to help their partner by asking them if they needed ‘help’ or ‘more time’. Co-operation levels were high and everyone was eager to listen to their partner read!
This week we discussed safe transitions before and after school. We used thumbs up or thumbs down to decide if a behaviour was part of a safe transition before and after school. Safe behaviours included:
- Remaining in designated areas until bell goes before and after school.
- Entering classrooms only when the teacher is present.
- Playing safely in correct areas and following rules.
- Using respectful language with adults and peers.
- Acting responsibly when travelling to and from school (e.g. by bus, car, bike or walking).
- Cooperating with adults and peers.
LEM’s
Phonics Focus
LEM Phonics: What is Phonics?
Reading involves linking letters to speech sounds and then blending these sounds together to read words. Phonics is the process of linking an individual speech sound (phoneme) to a written symbol (grapheme). It is the relationship between sound and letter.
Each sound in the English language can be represented by a single letter (r, b) or multiple letters (ch, th, igh). These written units of sound are called phonograms. The English language has 42 sounds represented by 75 phonograms.
Learning to read and spell is essentially learning a code. Learning about the relationship between the phonograms and the speech sounds they represent allows us to “crack the code” and learn to both read (decode) and spell (encode).
For example, when we say the word “phonics” there are six sounds that we can hear in the spoken word. However, we spell the word with seven letters:
We ‘hear’ /f/o/n/i/k/s. The written code is ph/o/n/i/c/s.
At Jones Hill State School our reading and spelling program is LEM Phonics. LEM Phonics begins with the skills of communication- listening, speaking, reading, writing and spelling. Students are explicitly and systematically introduced to the phonograms and the rules to allow them to gain the skills and understanding necessary for reading, writing and spelling.

MATHEMATICS ROCKS
PARTITIONING NUMBERS - Partitioning is the process of breaking a number into parts. Partitioning is taught to young children in order to work with problems that involve large numbers by splitting them into smaller units. Partitioning can be done instead of adding numbers in a column.
eg. 79+34=113 and change into 70+30+9+4=100+13=113
1. Children first partition when they recognise parts in small numbers.
2. This then develops into trusted combinations for small numbers.
3. Children then progress to recognising and using place value parts in larger numbers.
4. Later, partitioning becomes critical for efficient mental computation and written methods.
Please click the link below for some games to practice partitioning at home.
UNIDENTIFIED BANK TRANSACTION
We have an unidentified bank transaction in our system. If you have received your statement and noticed what’s owing is greater than what it should be, please come into the office with proof of your deposit and we will investigate this for you.
CATCHMENT AREA CLARIFICTION
Joint Statement from James Nash State High School and Gympie High State School
James Nash State High School and Gympie State High School are managed by incatchment enrolment plans, which accept students based on their home locality to each school. As a result, your home address determines the high school your child will attend.
To check which catchment you are in, please follow the below instructions:
- Visit http://www.qgso.qld.gov.au/maps/edmap/
- On the left hand side of the screen, click on the second option ‘Secondary Catchments – Year 7-10’
- On the left hand side, type in your address in ‘Find my Address’
- Enter your home address in and this will provide the secondary school catchment for your child.
Both high schools offer ‘Programs of Excellence’ which provide opportunity for a small number of out-of-catchment students to make applications to the alternate high school. These programs are:
James Nash State High School:
- Academic excellence
- Academy of Creative Arts
- Rugby union
Gympie State High School:
- Specialised School of Excellence for Maths and Science (SSOE)
- Rural Industries School of Excellence (RISE)
- Interactive Digital Media Program of Excellence
- Centurions Sporting Academies Program – Sporting Excellence (Rugby League, Futsal and Volleyball)
Catchment areas are based on the home address of the student, not the school they currently attend.

RELAY FOR LIFE
Each year Jones Hill School has a team of Year 6 students take part in Gympie’s Relay for Life. It’s not too late to join our year 6 Jones Hill School Relay for Life team. This year we have decided to extend the invitation to all students. Relay for Life is a community fundraising challenge raising vital funds to support cancer patients and the Cancer Council.
Although the event runs overnight (3pm Saturday October 26 to 9am Sunday October 27) the students will only participate from 3pm to 7:30pm on the Saturday. Fundraising events will be held at the school including our yearly 5 cent class challenge in August. Students may also ask for sponsorship donations from family and friends.
If you think your child would like to represent the school at this event please contact Mrs Hurren as soon as possible (email jhurr5@eq.edu.au). Further information will be sent home with students to explain registration (including cost) and details of the event. Please note students from Prep to Year 3 will require a parent or guardian to supervise them on the day.
If you would like further information please contact Mrs Hurren.
