LEADERSHIP TEAM REPORT

Welcome back to the start of Term 3, as we experience some of our coldest mornings of the year so far! It is a far cry from the warmth of Cape York and Far North QLD weather during our family trip. It was a great break visiting an amazing part of our state.

I would like to thank Mrs Seed who most ably filled in for me while I was on leave.

I hope you have all enjoyed the winter vacation also and are ready for the busy term ahead. This term we have Dance Fever, which is always enjoyed by students. I look forward to the culminating concert.

Last Sunday we had a sneak peak at our hardworking students Wakakirri performance rehearsal. These students will represent our school next Thursday and perform at the Caloundra Event Centre. They will be performing a dress rehearsal on parade this Friday.

Congratulations to these students for their dedication and in particular Mrs Crow for her coordination and training of the students.

This has been a huge undertaking and only achievable due to the great support of staff, parents and dedicated students. Well done!

There has been media reporting around QLD teachers taking strike action this term due to stalled negotiations with the QLD government. I am pleased to report this action will not take place over the next few weeks while teachers across the state consider the government offer and vote on accepting or rejecting the offer.

Year 3 Barambah Camp

The Year 3 classes are very excited with the Barambah Camp fast approaching. The year 3s will be attending the camp on 31st July – 1st August. Payment and all permission and medical forms need to be returned to the office by Friday 19th July please.

GYMPIE MUSTER – Sign Up

We have again been fortunate to secure a role at this year’s Gympie Muster, August 21 to 25. It involves providing and scanning wrist bands at the main gate leading into the entertainment area. There is no money handling involved. To fulfil this role, we require at least six (6) people over the age of 18, per shift. The shifts are from Wednesday through to Sunday from 7am to 10pm.

Shifts are 6 hours long. Obviously we will try and provide you with your preferred shift/s, but please consider early morning and night time shifts as well; as these are the hardest to fill. If you are able to help the P&C with this fundraising event, please sign up. On Thursday 18th July, you can sign up under the old Admin Building near the front of the school and on Friday 19th July, you can sign up at the hall. Col Morley will be at these locations between 8:15 – 9:00am to take your name and answer any questions you may have.

Volunteers who do a shift for Jones Hill SS, are able to get a ONE DAY PASS to the Gympie Muster ($5 donation). So come along, sign up and join the muster fun.

This fundraising activity is worth $3500 to our school, and that is a lot of raffle tickets you don’t have to buy and we don’t have to sell. Your help is needed and greatly appreciated.

Containers Please

Since the start of the year, Jones Hill SS has collected 3886 containers. Keep bringing in your containers for recycling. All plastic bottles, aluminium cans, tetra packs can be dropped off to the office. Glass bottles can be brought in by adults only. The Jones Hill SS community is doing their part to reduce landfill and keep our waterways clean. Thank you to all of our families and students for supporting this very worthy cause.

Prep Enrolments for 2020

If you have a child attending Prep in 2020 and would like them to attend our school, please contact our school administration staff. This may be done by phoning us on 54890555, calling into the office or via email on admin@jonehillss.eq.edu.au. Our staff can answer all of your questions and are happy to help. We do accept out-of-catchment enrolments and last year all of our out-of-catchment students were able to attend Jones Hill State School. By adding your child to our current waiting list you will receive information regarding our Prep Transition Programs and information sessions.

Spare Clothes

If your child has required a change of clothes and has borrowed shorts from the office, can these please be washed and returned as soon as possible. If anyone has any spare or unwanted shorts they would like to donate to the school it would be greatly appreciated.

Kind Regards,

James Watt - Principal
Stacey Seed – Deputy Principal

SWPBS NEWS

This week in Year 5 we revisited our behaviour expectations in the classroom and learning settings. We appreciate that the classroom is a shared learning space and it is important to keep it clean and tidy, respect our belongings and act safely at all times.

Some examples for being safe in the classroom that we identified include:

  • Using equipment with care
  • Keeping our desk areas clean, tidy and organised
  • Walking and being aware of personal space
  • Cleaning up after ourselves
  • Moving around without disruptions

Next week we will be focusing on Learning in the Playground. Lunch and play times were identified as a favourite time of day for many students, especially since the introduction of our new playground, however we need rules to keep it a safe place for everyone. We will be looking at the following safe behaviours:

  • Know where we should be at all times
  • The importance of following all adult instructions
  • Turn taking
  • Common sense
  • Appropriate areas for playing certain games
  • What to do if you no longer want to play
  • Why it is important to include others in play

Phonics Focus : Why is it important to focus on sounds?

It all begins with what we hear.

Being able to hear and work with the sounds (phonemes) of spoken words allows students to relate the sounds into written letters (graphemes). The process for building an awareness of sounds and how they come together to make words is Phonemic Awareness.

Phonemic Awareness is gained through a series of stages and strategies which include the ability to rhyme, segment words into single sounds and syllables, blend sounds together, identify sounds in different positions in words and manipulate sounds within words.

Phonemic Awareness Strategy 1 is Rhyme:

1.Rhyme

  • Students recognise rhyme.
    E.g. hat, cat, mat, sat.
  • Students complete rhymes.
    E.g. ‘Hickory, dickory, dock.
The mouse ran up the _________.’
  • Students produce their own rhymes.
    E.g. ‘The little dog,
    jumped up on the log.’

What you can do at home:

  • Play rhyming games in the car on the way home. Take turns at adding a rhyming word. How many words can you think of that sound the same at the end? (Pan, man, can. Kite, night, light. Truth, youth, booth. etc).
  • Begin a rhyme and allow children to finish it. E.g. Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall. Humpty Dumpty……..
  • Create your very own new rhymes together. Say them aloud or write them down.
  • Look for and talk about rhyming words in songs or raps.
  • Poetry and rhyming with a touch of silly added are effective tools for older children also.

MEET OUR STAFF

Music Teacher – Lisa Rose

Hello, my name is Lisa Rose and I have had the pleasure of being the classroom music teacher this term at Jones Hill. My family and I only moved to Gympie recently and have loved the change from city living to now being on acreage with lots of animals and space to move. I've had a wonderful Term 2 meeting so many friendly students, staff and parents. Thank you for the warm welcome!

USC EXPLORE WRITING COMPETITION

Three of our year 6 students recently became published authors. They had to write a story about a day in their desired career. Liliana, Josephine and Angel all received runner up prizes. They went to USC Sippy Downs campus for the day where they were awarded, the runners up prize, a writing workshop, a free lunch and a tour of the campus. It was a lovely day surrounded by creative people. Their stories will be on the USC Explore writing competition webpage and have been published in an anthology of the winning entries.

QUEENSLAND READY READING

The Ready Reading program invites parents and community members to make a difference in their local community by volunteering in schools to support children’s reading.

Reading is a powerful tool to help children grow their vocabulary, language skills and imagination. It helps them to develop life-long skills that will support their future growth and learning.

The Department of Education’s Reading Centre and Volunteering Queensland are working together to help improve literacy for children in Queensland by training up to 3000 volunteers to share their knowledge and time to foster a love of reading.

Register your interest to become a Ready Reading volunteer.
