SWPBS NEWS
Week 3’s behaviour focus is, being respectful in the classroom by not being disruptive. Students are responsible for their own actions and therefore when they cause a disruption it is a choice they have made to be disrespectful.
Students should be choosing the following behaviours.
- Be an active listener and follow instructions.
- Follow adult directions.
- Respect personal space and property of others.
- Be co -operative and join in all class activities.
- Completing set work.
- Respecting the rights of others to learn.
Week 4’s behaviour focus is relationships in the classroom and other learning areas. Developing a good relationship with others is an important life skill needed for being a productive member of society.
Having good relationships means:
- Co-operating and compromising
- Accepting differences in culture and ideas
- Helping others
- Participating with others
- Listening to others opinions and accepting they may be different to yours

Teacher – Grade 6
LEMs
Phonics Focus: Which sounds should students learn?
The Phonograms.
The English language has 42 sounds represented by 75 phonograms. In LEM Phonics, phonograms are divided into: Single Phonograms, Multiple Phonograms and Successive Seventeen Phonograms.
Because some phonograms can say more than one sound, a number code is used to represent which sound that phonogram is saying in a particular word. All vowels say more than one sound.
What you can do at home:
Mark the correct number above each underlined a.
cat make fast talk ball was want class
Mark the correct number above each underlined e.
he rent re⸳cent bell rec⸳ord fe⸳male get ev⸳er

WAKAKIRRI 2019
Last Thursday thirty-seven students travelled down to Caloundra on the bus for our Wakakirri performance. It took us 1 hour, 13 minutes and 15 seconds. Once we arrived at The Events Centre, we had our lunch in the gardens outside and watched the other schools arrive. After this, we were introduced to Nerida, our Wakakirri representative and watched a short video about the judging. We also learnt that the word ‘chookas’ meant ‘good luck’. After we were shown to our dressing room, we had the opportunity to watch some other schools practice before it was our turn on stage. We had two dress rehearsals on stage with lighting and effects and the judges really enjoyed our story of Charlotte’s Web.
During the afternoon, we walked to the Caloundra foreshore and had our pizza dinner. There we had a hair, make up and face painting production line carried out by the teachers and parents. We even had a run through in the park where we had a captive audience of onlookers. Upon returning to The Event Centre we got dressed into our costumes and walked on the ‘red carpet’ and had our photos taken by a photographer. Wilbur, Charlotte and one of the spiders also got to meet the judge and here we found out that we were performing sixth. While we were waiting our turn, we were able to watch the other schools perform. By the time it was our turn on stage, we were so excited!
At the end of the show, we were awarded a participation certificate and we won the ‘Best individual hair and makeup’ and ‘Best minimal use of sets, props and costumes’ awards.
We had a big day, but enjoyed every minute of it. If you get the opportunity to participate in Wakakirri, we definitely recommend you do!!
Savanna (Grade 6), Tawni (Grade 6) and Camryn (Grade 5)

BOOK WEEK
Book week will be celebrated in our school community from August 17 – 23 and this year’s theme is ‘Reading is My Secret Power’. I’m sure you are already thinking about your costume for the dress up day. This year we would also like to try something new to encourage our students to participate in the Book Week festivities. It would be wonderful to see children create a ‘Book Response’ for their favourite book. Book responses can take many forms. Here are some ways that you might like to show how much you loved reading your book.
- Draw/paint a picture about the story.
- Create a Lego model scene.
- Write a letter to the author explaining why you enjoyed the book.
- Write a poem that captures everything you enjoyed about the story.
- Create a diorama, a miniature 3-dimensional scene that recreates a setting.
- If you read a biography or historical-fiction novel, make a timeline to show the main events of the story. Use drawings, clipart, or magazine cutouts to illustrate events along the timeline. Then draw a map showing the location(s) where the story took place.
- Make a game based on a book you recently read.
- Make a model/mask of your favourite book character.
- Write a book report.
The event is open to all ages and grades. It’s all about creativity and a love of books!! If you would like more ideas please see Mrs Blake (1S) or Mrs Walters (Library). We are very excited to see how you choose to celebrate your favourite book.

MEET OUR STAFF
Sue Curran – Prep Teacher
Hello there. My name is Sue Curran and I’m very happy to be a part of the Jones Hill team. I have been teaching Primary School children since (even I have to sit down for this) 1989! Admittedly there was a break of 5+ years in this time to cuddle three newborns and nurture my family. I was privileged to teach Prep with its introduction in 2007 at Gympie Central SS. I then moved to Gympie South SS where nine very fast and happy years have led me here. It’s true to say, over these years, I’ve taught the equivalent of a whole school of Preppers and I still thoroughly enjoy the challenge and fun. It is a job that is all consuming, never boring or dull and so very rewarding. Thank you for your warm welcome.
CANBERRA TRIP 2020
An invoice for the second payment for the Canberra Trip 2020 has now been sent home. We are hoping to have the final cost and a set itinerary any day now. The fundraising crew have been working very hard and have the buses to and from the airport totally covered. Well done to you all.
QUEENSLAND READY READING
The Ready Reading program invites parents and community members to make a difference in their local community by volunteering in schools to support children’s reading.
Reading is a powerful tool to help children grow their vocabulary, language skills and imagination. It helps them to develop life-long skills that will support their future growth and learning.
The Department of Education’s Reading Centre and Volunteering Queensland are working together to help improve literacy for children in Queensland by training up to 3000 volunteers to share their knowledge and time to foster a love of reading.
Register your interest to become a Ready Reading volunteer.
MINI COLES COLECTABLES
3MD are looking for any Mini Coles Collectable shopping items for their classroom. These little collectables are handy to use when they explore money, especially change and for graphing. Please drop any you have spare or aren’t collecting to the office, it will be greatly appreciated.
CATCHMENT AREA CLARIFICTION
Joint Statement from James Nash State High School and Gympie High State School
James Nash State High School and Gympie State High School are managed by in catchment enrolment plans, which accept students based on their home locality to each school. As a result, your home address determines the high school your child will attend.

- Visit http://www.qgso.qld.gov.au/maps/edmap/
- On the left hand side of the screen, click on the second option ‘Secondary
- Catchments – Year 7-10’
- On the left hand side, type in your address in ‘Find my Address’
- Enter your home address in and this will provide the secondary school catchment for your child.
Both high schools offer ‘Programs of Excellence’ which provide opportunity for a small number of out-of-catchment students to make applications to the alternate high school. These programs are:
James Nash State High School:
- Academic excellence
- Academy of Creative Arts
- Rugby union

- Specialised School of Excellence for Maths and Science (SSOE)
- Rural Industries School of Excellence (RISE)
