LEADERSHIP TEAM REPORT

Hi Everyone,

We have reached the middle of term 3. The year is flying, with only 15 weeks of the 2019 school year remaining.

This week is action packed with the school being involved in a lot of activities, beginning with STEAMzone on Wednesday and the reintroduction of Friday sport for students in years 5 & 6 on Friday.

Earlier this week Mrs Seed and I spoke with the year 5 students about their role as school leaders in 2020. We are looking forward to seeing them step up as leaders and role models towards the end of this year and into next year.

We spoke with them about the process they go through to be a leader and how leadership capacity is determined with our strong school processes in behaviour levels and daily traffic lights.

Every student at Jones Hill has behaviour, English and math goal. Students striving for leadership will be able to tell you exactly what their goal is and what they need to demonstrate to achieve it.

We have been recognising National Science Week at school, with the year 5 and 6 students attending the STEAM Zone Excursion where they have been involved in hands on, fun and interesting science, technology, engineering and mathematics activities. The year 1-3 students will have a visit from Curtis Dray (Gympie Regional Library) with some unique gizmos, which will be highly engaging for our younger students to develop their science knowledge and understanding.

Cleanaway Lessons

Elli Webb has been conducting Cleanaway lessons this week with every class. Elli has been very impressed with the knowledge our students have about sustainability, recycling and caring for our environment, making real changes in their lives, that make a difference.

Third Party Website Consent Letter

The use of web based educational resources has risen steadily over the last decade and are used by teachers to help develop student learning outcomes. This week students will be receiving a Third Party Website Consent letter. Student information will be safe at all times as the websites listed in the letter have all had risk assessments completed by Qld Education Department. Parents are asked to fill in this letter and return it to the office as soon as possible.

TRISH JACKSON VISIT

Thalidomide survivor and inspirational speaker, Trish Jackson, is coming to Jones Hill School to talk with the Year 4-6 students after parade on Friday 30 August. Trish Jackson is a survivor of the drug Thalidomide, she was born in Townsville North Queensland in 1962, with 3 tiny fingers on each underdeveloped hand and her tiny hands are attached to her shoulders as she was born without arms. She also had six holes in her heart and under developed lungs. Despite the best medical opinions that she, would not survive, she survived. Trish’s uses her disability to open people’s minds to what we are all capable of with resilience and determination. Trish is an accomplished photographer, artist and motivational speaker. She has faced many obstacles in her life and yet has never let that stop her from achieving her dreams. As a part of the session, Trish will distribute clipboards to the students so that they can attempt to draw with their feet just like she does.

For more information about Trish Jackson, her website is below.

School Opinion Surveys

The annual School Opinion Surveys will be conducted 29 July to 23 August 2019. All families, school staff and a random sample of students will be invited to participate. We encourage you to take this opportunity to have your say about what our school does well, and how our school can improve.

Access details for the Parent/Caregiver Survey will be sent home with students this week. The survey can be completed via computers, tablets or smart phones with internet connection. We greatly appreciate your time and responses to the survey.

Containers Please

Keep bringing in your containers for recycling. All plastic bottles, aluminium cans, tetra packs can be dropped off to the office. Glass bottles can be brought in by adults only. The Jones Hill SS community is doing their part to reduce landfill and keep our waterways clean. Thank you to all of our families and students for supporting this very worthy cause.

Prep Enrolments for 2020

If you have a child attending Prep in 2020 and would like them to attend our school, please contact our school administration staff. This may be done by phoning us on 54890555, calling into the office or via email on admin@jonehillss.eq.edu.au. Our staff can answer all of your questions and are happy to help. We do accept out-of-catchment enrolments and last year all of our out-of-catchment students were able to attend Jones Hill State School. By adding your child to our current waiting list you will receive information regarding our Prep Transition Programs and information sessions.

Spare Clothes

If your child has required a change of clothes and has borrowed shorts from the office, can these please be washed and returned as soon as possible. If anyone has any spare or unwanted shorts they would like to donate to the school it would be greatly appreciated.

Kind Regards,

SWPBS NEWS

Week 5 is all about TRANSITIONS - Moving from Place to Place

Prep C walk to the library and the hall for lessons. Even though we take the direct path to make sure we are on time, it seems so far away, with so much to take our attention along the way! We are working on showing consideration for others when lining up or moving around school. We are much better at showing RESPECT as we consider the learning of others, by not disturbing or distracting the classes that we pass.

Being safe and respectful means we:

  • Walk safely between play areas and buildings
  • Stay together as a class group when moving around school
  • Know correct procedures for transition times e.g. bells, lining up
  • Be organised and on time
  • Respect bell times and lining up routines
  • Move quietly and show respect to other classes
  • Respect adults and follow instructions

Week 6 focuses on BEHAVIOUR BEFORE/AFTER SCHOOL AND TOILET ROUTINES

WHY? To keep everyone safe and happy before and after school and in the toilet areas

Of a morning, no matter how we arrive to school, it is important for Prep C to enter the classroom with a smile. We use respectful language with other adults and peers who have come in to help us. We have jobs to do and routines to follow before the school bell rings. Of an afternoon, we know to wait in our classroom if our special person hasn’t arrived to pick us up after our long day. That way we stay safe. We are not allowed to leave our classroom without asking and know to the best time to use the toilet is during break times.

Before and after school, playground and around classrooms, it is important to demonstrate these rules:

  • Remain in designated areas until bell goes
  • Enter classrooms only when teacher is present
  • Play safely in correct areas
  • Follow correct routines before and after school
  • Use problem solving skills
  • Play safely and follow the rules
  • Respect school routines before and after school
  • Use respectful language with adults and peers
  • Act responsibly when travelling to and from school
  • Be considerate of others and follow correct routines

If we go out into our community wearing our green school shirt, we know it is important that we represent our school and follow our rules.

LEMs

LEM Phonics: Why is it important to focus on words?

Word awareness is one of the concepts of print which allow students to understand how a text works and how a text can be understood in the intended way. Students need to know these concepts so that they are able to understand the ‘rules’ of how a written text works and are able to begin to understand the message. Effective readers use these skills to ‘break the code’ of written text as they engage in reading and writing activities.

Phonemic Awareness Strategy 2 is Word Awareness.

The understanding of the mechanics of a text and alphabet knowledge include:

  • Knowledge that words are separated by spaces.
  • Recognising the difference between symbols including alphabetic letters vs numerals vs punctuation.
  • The purpose of punctuation and capital letters.
  • Knowledge of the names of each letter.
  • Recognition of each upper and lower case letter.
  • Knowing the difference between letters and words.

As students begin to recognise familiar words and letters it is important that they are provided with the language terms which enable them to talk about the concepts they are grasping.

What you can do at home:

  • Become detectives together to investigate how many words are in a sentence? “How do you know?”
  • Write funny stories together.
  • Find and discuss the purpose of spaces, capital letters, punctuation.
  • Have fun exploring together!

BOOK WEEK

Book Week will be celebrated in our school community from August 17 – 23 and this year’s theme is ‘Reading is My Secret Power’. I’m sure you are already thinking about your costume for the Dress Up day on Friday August 23. This year we would also like to try something new to encourage our students to participate in the Book Week festivities. It would be wonderful to see children create a ‘Book Response’ for their favourite book. Book responses can take many forms. Here are some ways that you might like to show how much you loved reading your book: book.

  • Draw/paint a picture about the story.
  • Create a Lego model scene.
  • Write a letter to the author explaining why you enjoyed the book.
  • Write a poem that captures everything you enjoyed about the story.
  • Create a diorama, a miniature 3-dimensional scene that recreates a setting.
  • If you read a biography or historical-fiction novel, make a timeline to show the main events of the story. Use drawings, clipart, or magazine cutouts to illustrate events along the timeline. Then draw a map showing the location(s) where the story took place.
  • Make a game based on a book you recently read.
  • Make a model/mask of your favourite book character.
  • Write a book report.

The event is open to all ages and grades. It’s all about creativity and a love of books! If you would like more ideas please see Mrs Blake (1S) or Mrs Walters (Library). We are very excited to see how you choose to celebrate your favourite book. All entries are to be taken to the library.

MEET OUR STAFF

Renee Berry – Teacher

Hi my name is Renee Berry and I have recently re-joined the teaching workforce after having some time off on Maternity Leave. I was very pleased to receive the news that I would be commencing my teaching journey as a Year 4 teacher at Jones Hill State School as I spent some time doing supply here last year and it was my favourite school.

Outside of school, I enjoy spending time with my husband, Tim and two daughters, Isla and Georgia. We spend a lot of time dancing (cleaning) and singing (while cleaning) to the same five Wiggles tunes and sometimes dare to venture out of the house. I also enjoy fitness and believe in the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

The transition back into the classroom has been a smooth one thanks to the excellent support from the staff, students and parents of Jones Hill State School. I look forward to continuing to work with my class and working hard to ensure that each student is achieving their best across all areas.

BALLOON ROCKET EXPERIMENT

Over the past couple of weeks, the students of 4N have been having lots of fun learning about forces in Science. Through a variety of experiments that include bouncing balls, running with parachutes and playing tug-of-war, students have been able to learn about forces such as push, pull, friction and gravity and how they affect different objects.

Students were very excited to continue learning about forces by conducting the “Balloon Rocket” experiment. This experiment focused on the force and thrust principles. In small groups, the students were given a balloon, a straw, a piece of string and some sticky tape. They needed to use these materials to get the balloon rocket from one pole to the other. Eventually, the red group figured out how to arrange the materials into a successful Balloon Rocket and the class was thrilled to see it in action. It was great to see the students working well together, sharing ideas and learning in such a positive and enthusiastic environment. Well done 4N!

CATCHMENT AREA CLARIFICTION

Joint Statement from James Nash State High School and Gympie High State School

James Nash State High School and Gympie State High School are managed by in catchment enrolment plans, which accept students based on their home locality to each school. As a result, your home address determines the high school your child will attend.

To check which catchment you are in, please follow the below instructions:

  1. Visit http://www.qgso.qld.gov.au/maps/edmap/
  2. On the left hand side of the screen, click on the second option ‘Secondary Catchments – Year 7-10’
  3. On the left hand side, type in your address in ‘Find my Address’
  4. Enter your home address in and this will provide the secondary school catchment for your child.

Both high schools offer ‘Programs of Excellence’ which provide opportunity for a small number of out-of-catchment students to make applications to the alternate high school. These programs are:

James Nash State High School:

  • Academic excellence
  • Academy of Creative Arts
  • Rugby union

Gympie State High School:

  • Specialised School of Excellence for Maths and Science (SSOE)
  • Rural Industries School of Excellence (RISE)
  • Interactive Digital Media Program of Excellence
  • Centurions Sporting Academies Program – Sporting Excellence (Rugby League,
  • Futsal and Volleyball)

Catchment areas are based on the home address of the student, not the school they currently attend.

LITTLE KIDS BIG DAY OUT

CAMP AUSTRALIA NEWS

Hello Jones Hill families,

First of all a very big and warm welcome to our new assistant April. I am very excited to have April join our team here at Camp Australia OHSC. April has recognized a few faces in the Prep and Grade One classes which she has cared for in her past years working in early childhood. Please feel free to come down and meet April anytime during our service hours as she will be working alongside myself, five days a week. I apologise to the families who have struggled to make bookings in the past week, due to reaching our student capacity because of our 15-1 student to educator ratio. We will no longer have to worry about this now we have two educators at our service, once again.

We are all very excited to announce that we have added another cooking day to our program. This was our first week starting 'Pancake Friday' which the children absolutely loved. This is another opportunity for children who are not here on our regular cooking day, Tuesday afternoon, to be involved in a cooking session and enjoy their own cooking for breakfast.

We have a wonderful range of activities at Camp Australia, before and after school care. Every week involves, cooking, imaginative play, art & craft, outdoor activities & sport, gardening, science and much more. Please feel free to come and see me at the hall between 6.30am-9.00am and 2.30pm-6.00pm, Monday to Friday.
