LEADERSHIP TEAM REPORT

Hi Everyone,

Since our last newsletter there has been so much happening around our school and community. The 2019 Gympie Music Muster has come and gone and been another great success for our school. I would like to thank Mr Col Morley who again this year has devoted a huge amount of time and energy to managing this event on our behalf. He has handled the paperwork, logistics and day to day running of our fundraising event. It could not have been achieved without his dedication.

I would also like to thank everyone who volunteered their time to support this fundraising effort. What a great community we have, from Susan in the office sorting the rosters to the family and community members who manned the gates and ticket booths. Thank you!

Last week we received a letter from Eli Webb who ran the Cleanaway recycling lessons with all our students. We were so proud to read the glowing feedback she had about our school and students who engaged in the lessons and demonstrated a very high level of understanding and behaviour. Another great testament to our wonderful staff, students and school community.

Friday we celebrated 2019 Book Week. What another sensational turnout of support for students at Jones Hill being great readers. As you know reading is Jones Hill’s number one priority. We believe every student has a right to be a competent and fluent reader which will open a world of opportunity.

The range and creativity of costumes was a colourful sight. Well done everyone.

Third Party Website Consent Letter

The use of web based educational resources has risen steadily over the last decade and are used by teachers to help develop student learning outcomes. Students have received a Third Party Website Consent letter. Student information will be safe at all times as the websites listed in the letter have all had risk assessments completed by Qld Education Department. Parents are asked to fill in this letter and return it to the office as soon as possible.

Trish Jackson Visit

Thalidomide survivor and inspirational speaker, Trish Jackson, is coming to Jones Hill School to talk with the Year 4-6 students after parade on Friday 30 August. Trish Jackson is a survivor of the drug Thalidomide, she was born in Townsville North Queensland in 1962, with 3 tiny fingers on each underdeveloped hand and her tiny hands are attached to her shoulders as she was born without arms. She also had six holes in her heart and under developed lungs. Despite the best medical opinions that she, would not survive, she survived. Trish’s uses her disability to open people’s minds to what we are all capable of with resilience and determination. Trish is an accomplished photographer, artist and motivational speaker. She has faced many obstacles in her life and yet has never let that stop her from achieving her dreams. As a part of the session, Trish will distribute clipboards to the students so that they can attempt to draw with their feet just like she does.

For more information about Trish Jackson, her website is on the link below.

All plastic bottles, aluminium cans, tetra packs can be dropped off to the office. Glass bottles can be brought in by adults only. The Jones Hill SS community is doing their part to reduce landfill and keep our waterways clean. Thank you to all of our families and students for supporting this very worthy cause.

MATHS FUN

Partitioning Warm-Up

Play the Covers game (on the sheet Covers Game Board) to build student fluency in partitioning single-digit numbers.

This is a game for two or three players. Players share a game board and a 10-sided die. Each player has a different coloured set of counters.

Have students –

  • Take turns to roll a 10-sided dice.
  • Partition each number rolled.
  • Cover these digits on the board, e.g if 8 is rolled, a player could cover: 4 and 4 OR 6 and 2 OR 1, 5 and 2.

The Player to first cover four digits in a straight line, using only their coloured counters wins the game.

Note: When a 1 is rolled, the player places a counter over a 1 on the board. If a zero is rolled, miss a turn.

Please click on the link below to download a copy of the Covers Game Board.

CELEBRATION OF BOOKS

Thankyou everyone for taking part in BOOK WEEK – “Reading is my Secret Power.” We all had a wonderful week, sharing in the celebration of our love for books.

Jones Hill Book Week Dress-Up Day was a day full of fun and creativity at its best! Students and Staff embraced their SECRET POWER – READING in many different forms by dressing up as their favourite book character.

This year our very own Jones Hill mum and author, Karen Foxlee, has written a book which was chosen as an HONOUR book in the CBCA BOOK OF THE YEAR: OLDER READERS category. Lenny’s Book of Everything is available for loan in our School Library. Reserve yourself a copy for a magical journey from A to Z.

Thankyou also to Ms Tracey Richters, from Gympie Regional Library who was our guest speaker on parade. Tracey thoroughly enjoyed her day reading some of her favourite books to our Preps to Year 3’s.

READING is your SECRET POWER, continue your reading journey at every opportunity.

MEET OUR STAFF

Hello! My name is Casey Mansfield and I have been teaching at Jones Hill State School since 2014. My husband and I originally moved to Gympie to be nearer to family and we love it so much that we plan to stay for a very long time. We have three daughters, two that currently attend Jones Hill School and love it, as well as an energetic two year old! Life is never dull at our place with a dog, goat, horses, cows and cats.

I love teaching, particularly in the Early Childhood area (Prep to Year 3). I love to make learning fun and authentic! I especially like to incorporate games and hands on activities in to my daily program that get children moving, thinking, creating and learning. I spent the first three years at Jones Hill teaching Prep and it has been wonderful to get a chance to teach many of my Prep students again in Grade 3.

NEWS FROM CHAPPY

Hi All,

This Friday in the hall at 9:30 we have Trish Jackson, a disabled motivational speaker, coming to visit us to speak with the year 4-6 students about resilience, positive body image, and growing up different. Resilience is a big part of life and Trish has a life story that shows just how much resilience can help someone get through a range of situations.

Resilience is the ability each of us possesses to be able to deal with situations in our lives that come up. It helps us to process emotions, regulate our responses to others and to live lives with less stress. When we have resilience we know that events in our lives may not be as bad as what we think and we can cope every day.

Having Trish come to speak with us about resilience is another wonderful way to learn how others build resilience and to gain another’s perspective. Parents are invited to come and listen to Trish when she comes to speak with the students.

Have a great week. I look forward to seeing you around the school.

Chappy Caitlin
