LEADERSHIP TEAM REPORT
Hi Everyone,
In light of current dry weather and fire risks, the safety of our students, staff and families is our highest priority.
Our focus is keeping our school community safe and that’s why we are asking all parents and caregivers to please talk to their children about the dangers of fire.
You can take immediate action to reduce the risks of fireplay by:
- explaining to your child that fire is not a toy, but instead is a tool used by responsible adults
- teaching your children, if they find matches or lighters, to immediately hand them to adults or tell an adult if they see another child playing with matches and lighter
- using the checklist on this brochure to increase your family’s safety
- contacting Queensland Fire and Emergency Services to request the Fight Fire Fascination program (see page 2 of brochure).
Especially in this current weather environment, there is a very real risk to people and property.
Thank you for your support with this.
Shortly you will receive an invitation to take part in a parent teacher interview. This is a great opportunity to see how your child is progressing across the curriculum. We encourage everyone to book a time with their child’s teacher.
Tomorrow some of our students will take part in the Broncos Challenge at Albert Park. We would like to wish them luck for a great day.
Next week some year two and three students will participate in the rugby league gala day, also being held at Albert Park. The children are very excited and we know they will enjoy this event.
Last Friday students had a small taste of the fun to be had at the School Run4Fun Colour Explosion with staff coating them in the colour powder.
Students have already begun signing up and collecting donations and this week alone we are at $800!
Next year we will take our largest group of 83 students to Canberra. It will be a fantastic expereince for those year 5 & 6 students taking part. As part of the fundraising activities for the trip F45 have offered $20 for 14 days of fitness training. This is a special offer that will see all money go towards the fundraising effort. Thank you to F45 for this opportunity. You can secure your 14 day pass by downloading the F45 Training app and purchasing through the menu under ‘buy services’ OR come to the school office to collect a F45 card.
We would like to wish our students taking part in the Fraser Coast Technology Challenge on the weekend well. They are competing in the drone challenge.
We would like to thank all the parents that donated baked goods for our Bake Sale on Monday this week. We made a massive $680.00 to go towards the Canberra trip in 2020.
Prep Enrolments for 2020
If you have a child attending Prep in 2020 and would like them to attend our school, please contact our school administration staff. This may be done by phoning us on 54890555, calling into the office or via email on admin@jonehillss.eq.edu.au. Our staff can answer all of your questions and are happy to help. We do accept out-of-catchment enrolments and last year all of our out-of-catchment students were able to attend Jones Hill State School. By adding your child to our current waiting list you will receive information regarding our Prep Transition Programs and information sessions.
Our next Prep Transition Mornings are in Term 4. Wednesday 16th October and 13th of November, 9:00am to 10:30am. The children will have a PE, Music and Library activity. A great way for your child to meet our teachers and become familiar with Jones Hill School.
Containers Please
Since the start of the year, Jones Hill SS has collected 5644 containers. Keep bringing in your containers for recycling. All plastic bottles, aluminium cans, tetra packs can be dropped off to the office. Glass bottles can be brought in by adults only. The Jones Hill SS community is doing their part to reduce landfill and keep our waterways clean. Thank you to all of our families and students for supporting this very worthy cause.
Spare Clothes
If your child has required a change of clothes and has borrowed shorts from the office, can these please be washed and returned as soon as possible. If anyone has any spare or unwanted shorts they would like to donate to the school it would be greatly appreciated.
Kind Regards,
James Watt - Principal

How will you know you’re being an active learner?
You will:
- Learn new things
- Complete your work
- Feel proud and happy
- Receive feedback
- You can explain what you have learnt to others
Being an active learner is important as it helps us to learn and improve our understanding.

Phonics Focus: Phonemic Awareness
Phonemic Awareness is gained through a series of stages and strategies. The Australian Curriculum shows Phonemic Awareness as essential for students to understand the relationship between speech and print and, therefore to read and write. The LEM Phonics Phonemic Awareness Strategy 3 is syllabication.
Syllabication: Is the ability to break a word into its separate syllables. All words have one or more syllables. A spoken vowel sound will manifest itself by a drop of the jaw as the word is said. This can be helpful to analyse syllables, as a clearly spoken word will have one drop of the jaw for each syllable.
Syllable awareness is a skill that can help students ‘tune in’ to the sound structure of words and can be practiced through syllable segmentation and syllable blending.
Syllable segmentation is breaking a word into its syllable chunks and is important for spelling words.
Syllable blending is listening to the syllable chunks in a word and pulling them together to make a word. This is important for reading words.
Every syllable must contain a vowel or a vowel sound. Syllable breaks can be found in spoken words each time the jaw drops open by placing your hand under your chin while a word is said aloud. For example, when we say wonderful, we can find the syllable breaks and code the word into won•der•ful.
What you can do at home:
- Code the words: Place your hand under your chin as you say each word aloud to find the syllable breaks. Identify the vowel or vowel sound in each syllable. Code the word by writing it showing the syllable breaks with a dot (fam•i•ly). Never divide a one syllable word.
open budget recent pet insect appreciate participate laugh
- Mirror, mirror: Use a mirror to see how many times your jaw drops as you say each word.
- Syllable Snakes and Ladders or Monopoly: Replace a dice with word cards. Make word cards (favourite animals, fruit, sports) and use the number of syllables in a word to move forward in the game (e.g. ap•ple has two syllables and earns two jumps forward).
- Syllable sort: Have students sort pictures from magazines into words that have 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 syllables.

MATHS FUN
Ladders (Maths Game)
Big Idea: Place Value |
Suits: Years 1-7 |
Materials: 10 sided dice |
The aim of the game is for each player to write 2 digit numbers and order them correctly.
Instructions:
- Each player draws a ladder with 6 rungs (7 spaces).
- Players take turns to roll the dice and use the digits to make a 2-digit number. For example: Player 1 rolls 6 and 8. He can make 68 or 86.
- Players write their chosen number in one of the spaces on their ladder.
- Players continue to roll the dice and add numbers to their ladder, keeping a sequence of smallest to biggest (bottom to top).
- The first player who fills their entire ladder is the winner.
There will be times when a player is unable to write a number on their ladder, they simply miss their turn. For example, a player with the ladder above rolls a 5 and a 6, there is nowhere to put 56 or 65, so they miss their turn.
Guiding Questions:
- What strategy did you use when choosing numbers to put on the ladder?
- How did you decide where to place your numbers?
- What are you doing now that you weren’t doing the first time you played this game?

You can phone the office on 5489 0555, leave a message on the school absence line on 5489 0566 or you can enter the absence via QParents. We can’t believe that we are in week nine already. We have just received new flyers for parents/guardians who are interested in enrolling their children next term into our before and after school care program. You will find these down at the hall near our program information.
Just a reminder to parents, we will no longer be holding any sessions in the library due to our numbers growing and the weather warming up. A big thank you to Mrs Walters and other school staff for allowing us to use this space for the time we have, it has been much appreciated, especially on the cold mornings.
We have many exciting activities coming up in the last two weeks of term including cooking chocolate muffins, making an 'Eco garden' sign for the school Eco garden, pasta craft, making balloon rockets, galaxy mobiles and much more.
During our last session of the term on Friday the 20th of September, we will be having water play. If your child is booked in for after school care next Friday, please ensure they have a hat and spare pair of clothes to change into after our water activities. Sunscreen will be provided.
Thanks everyone,
