LEADERSHIP TEAM REPORT
Hi Everyone,
Welcome back to the start of term 4. We hope you had a great break and are ready for a busy end to the year.
Colour Explosion Update. So far students have raised $2536 for the Colour Explosion. With only three weeks to go there is still plenty of time. See Mrs Crow’s article in this newsletter for further details.
Swimming begins Monday for PC, PM, PR, 3/4D, 4N, 4W, 5C, 5MW, 6C & 6G.
Please ensure you have completed permission and medical forms if your child is attending. Please also ensure you have made the appropriate payments for swimming.
High School Enrolments
If you have a year 6 student transitioning to high school next year, please ensure you have completed their enrolment forms and have booked an enrolment meeting. Students cannot attend the transition day without being enrolled. The year 7 orientation day for James Nash and Gympie High is 2 December.
Relay for Life Fundraising Culmination Celebration
Hair Disaster. Earlier this year I had the great idea of shaving my head and colouring Mrs Seed’s hair purple if the students could raise $1500. I thought this was a fairly safe bet!
Everyone's reasons for fundraising are different and I must admit my support in the fundraising for cancer is very personal.
My life was devastatingly changed by cancer at the very tender age of 9 when I lost my father to pancreatic cancer. Unfortunately, I was to have a second encounter with this grim disease when I was diagnosed as having oesophageal cancer. However, thanks to all the advances in research I was able to overcome this disease with radical surgery. Without the research and advances made in this field, my outcome could have been a very different scenario. On Friday 18 October we will be holding a very special parade where we will be celebrating our fundraising efforts for our Relay for Life team. The goal was for the student population to raise $1500 to have my head shaved in front of the school community and for Mrs Seed to dye her hair purple. Our school was able to raise $2084 with the very generous donation from Cooloola Milk to boost our total far beyond our expectations. Joining us will be our Adopt-a-Cop, Reegan Cunningham, who will also shave his head for this great cause. Gympie’s Mayor Mick Curran will officiate during the parade. We would like to invite family and friends to join in this morning. Breakfast will be on sale from 8am and the parade will start at 9am.
Together we can celebrate our fundraising efforts that will go towards making it possible for all to have the chance at a bright and healthy future, whether it be through technologies for early detection or better, more effective treatment.
At Jones Hill School we believe that when students get involved in community service, they not only help others — they expand their worldview, develop empathy and leadership skills, and realize how their actions can have a positive impact.
Year 6 Graduation
Year 6 Graduation will take place on the evening of 9 December. The school holds a small and respectful ceremony for students as part of the completion of primary schooling and transition to high school. This evening is for year 6 students and their family. More information will be coming home to year 6 students, in the coming weeks.
I would like to welcome Ms Chandelle Duthie, who will be teaching 2W for the rest of the year. Miss Whitaker has taken up a permanent position at Northern Peninsula Area College in Bamaga.
Kind Regards,
James Watt - Principal

The vowel /u/ has four sounds.

MATHS FUN
Cross Out Singles
Big Idea:
Operate/Calculate
Suits: Years 2-6
Materials: Paper, pencils, 6 sided die
Draw a 3x3 grid with a circle above each column, to the right of each row and one diagonal.
Instruct students to do the same on their paper or in their book.
To Play: Explain that:
- The teacher/leader will roll the die. After each roll, students enter the number rolled in to any one of their boxes.
- There will be nine rolls. Students will enter numbers on the grid until all spaces are filled.
- Students add the numbers in each row, column and diagonal, writing the sum for each line in the circles.
- Students will tick sums that appear more than once, and cross out sums that occur only once (singles).
- Sums that are ticked are added to produce a ‘total score’ for the game. The player with the highest score wins.

BOOK FAIR – STOMP, CHOMP AND READ!
Dear Parents, Carers and Families,
Reading for pleasure unlocks the power of information and imagination and helps children discover who they are. Here’s what you can do to help children develop stronger reading skills and a love for reading:
- Set the example. Let children see you read.
- Have a collection of books in your home. Update this collection routinely to keep up with changing tastes and reading skills.
- Support our school’s Book Fair. Allow your children to choose their own books to read.
The theme of our Scholastic Book Fair is Dino-Mite, where we hope you will Stomp, Chomp, and Read! It’s a fun reading event that brings the books kids want to read right into our school. It’s a wonderful selection of engaging and affordable books for every reading level. Please make plans to visit our Book Fair and be involved in shaping your child’s reading habits.
Book Fair dates: Monday 14th – Friday 18th October, 2019
Shopping hours: 8am – 4pm (Before School, 1st Break & After School)
We look forward to seeing you and your family at our Book Fair! Remember, all purchases benefit our school.
Sincerely,
Ann Walters |

MEET THE STAFF
Hello, my name is Chandelle Duthie and I will be teaching 2W for the remainder of the year as Miss Whitaker embarks on her latest teaching adventure. Having recently escaped the hustle and bustle of the busy Gold Coast, I find myself enjoying, and truly appreciating, the fresh country air on my short and sweet drive to work - which no longer involves a 90 minute commute each way on the M1 daily - and the reconnection with community. I have been working for the Department of Education across the South East Region since 2009 in a variety of roles - from my beginnings as a Teacher Aide, to Classroom Teacher, Regional Staff Trainer and Behaviour Specialist - my days have been both fun and eventful, to say the least. I feel very fortunate to have been given an opportunity to work with the students of 2W and I look forward to further getting to know the extended Jones Hill community.
VISUAL ART CLUB
With Jacobi, Nate & Deacon
Wednesday & Thursday, 1st and 2nd break in the Library.
Booking Sheet on whiteboard, limited numbers per group.
Come along and be amazed by your creativity!
Jacobi resourced Visual Art supplies by approaching Art & Craft companies regarding the establishment of his club at school and he was well rewarded. Eckersley’s Art & Craft generously and Sunshine Coast Art & Framing Gallery supplied many resources much to the surprise of Jacobi, Nate & Deacon who are eager to share with you! Well done Jacobi.
JONES HILL STATE SCHOOL ART SHOW
READING BUDDIES
After a fantastic term 3 in partnership, 5MW and their prep buddies in PC have celebrated in an afternoon of outside games, fun and smiles. Each week, Year 5 students have taken the initiative to choose an additional library book to read to their prep buddies. Last term they had been focusing on engaging their buddies in reading with book walks. They take the time to predict, ask questions and be detectives looking for extra clues in the pictures to share the reading of a range of texts.
This was definitely a highlight of our last week and we are thrilled to see the progress happening in our young learners at Jones Hill State School.
