LEADERSHIP TEAM REPORT
Hi Everyone,
Jones Hill will be having our School Review on 30th October – 4th November. The reviewers will be talking to our staff, parents, students and community members about the processes at our school. This feedback helps us plan our direction for the next four years. Our four school priorities are continuing to be Reading, Writing, Numeracy and Attendance.
Shave for a Cure
A huge thank you to all the students, staff and families who joined us at our Relay for Life fundraising parade last friday. The morning was a great success and everyone was able to enjoy the revealing of purple hair, head shaving and hair cutting. Cancer can be such a grave subject but this morning it was all about celebrating the funds raised that will go towards finding different cures for this awful disease. I am very proud of the Jones Hill community and their commitment to this cause. I hope you have had an opportunity to enjoy the videos and photos that have been posted.

Daniel Morcombe Day
Due to the Colour Explosion Run4Fun on the 25th of October, Jones Hill SS students and staff will be recognising Daniel Morcombe Day FRIDAY 1st NOVEMBER by wearing red. This day highlights the importance of Child Safety and educating our children about how to keep themselves safe in all situations. No donation needed, all students are asked to wear red to show their support.

UPDATE FROM THE BUSINESS MANAGER
Student Resource Scheme
Jones Hill School has developed a SRS for classroom stationery lists, classroom consumables, IT applications and consumables, reproduced class workbooks and worksheets and classroom learning experiences. For more information regarding the SRS, please visit our website
https://jonehillss.eq.edu.au/
If you have previously opted in to the SRS your participation is assumed for the remainder of your child's enrolment, unless you inform the school otherwise by completing a new participation agreement form. If you are a new parent to the school, this information will assist you in making a decision as to whether you wish to participate in the SRS.
What is provided by the Queensland Government?
The Queensland Government supports children’s education by providing funding for instruction (teachers), facilities (school grounds and buildings, internet), and administration (staff to run the school). Funding for schools does not extend to individual student resources such as textbooks, equipment for personal use and many items used by the student in the classroom.
The SRS helps parents to source these resources. The school can purchase resources at lower rates due to its bulk buying power. Resources such as textbooks or musical instruments that will be used over a period of time are hired to students to further reduce costs for families. Participating in the SRS also offers a convenient way for parents to source the items that their child needs for school and ensures that all students have access to the same standard of resources
Student Resource Scheme participation forms are being sent home today. Please fill in and return a form for each child, after this form is filled in it will be understood that your child will remain in the SRS until your child leaves the school or you inform us otherwise.

Vacation Care
As you know, Jones Hill School offers a before and after school child care program run by Camp Australia. In 2020 we would like to look at the prospect of beginning vacation care. You do not have to be using before and after school care during the term to access vacation care.
To help us determine the potential needs and numbers required to operate the vacation care, we are seeking feedback from families both from Jones Hill State School as well as the broader local community
To help us do this, all we ask if you please take a few minutes to complete the survey. Surveys will be sent home today or alternatively print a form by clicking the link below.
Student Absence
Each parent of a child who is of compulsory school age has the legal obligation to ensure their child is enrolled and attends a state school or a non-state school, on every school day for the educational program in which the child is enrolled, unless the parent has a reasonable excuse. The safety and wellbeing of students are the highest priorities for the Department. Parents need to know if their child hasn't turned up for school, and schools need to know when and why a child is absent. Parents are required to contact the school on, or prior, to a student being absent. Absences may be reported by phone, written note or by using the QParent App. State schools will be required to notify parents on the same day that any student is absent from school without explanation. The school will send out daily SMS text messages to notify parents that their child is absent and allows a reply service for you to explain the absence. Currently there are students who are on our system with unexplained absences. You will receive a letter this week regarding these absences. Please return the letter to the office with a brief explanation of what the absence was for.

LEMs
Phonics Focus: Phonemic Awareness
Phonemic Awareness is gained through a series of stages and strategies. The LEM Phonics Phonemic Awareness Strategy 4 is Phonemic Isolation. This is the ability of a student to recognise individual sounds (phonemes) in words and where a sound is positioned (initial, middle, final) within a word. The Australian Curriculum provides understanding of how literacy progression develops through stages and lists the following indicators which identify a student’s ability to work within the level.
- provides a word when given a starting phoneme (p, picture).
- consistently says the first phoneme of a spoken word (good, g).
- listens to a group of words and indicates those that start with the same phoneme and says other words that start with that phoneme.
What you can do at home:
- Sound sort: Select a phonogram (e.g. /r/). It is important to identify the phonogram by the sound /r/ rather than the letter name. Provide picture cards which begin with a range of sounds (e.g. picture of a house, rat, ant, rug, banana). Ask the student to sort the pictures into a pile that start with the selected sound and a pile that do not. Brainstorm other words that could be added. Move on to sorting final sounds and then middle sounds.
- Sound Master: Say aloud a group of words beginning with the same sound (e.g. goat, good, gate, girl, get). Ask the student to identify the first sound of each word. The student should say the sound /g/ and not the letter name (gee). Brainstorm other words that could be selected.
- What’s the Sound Mr Wolf? Play the game like, ‘What’s the Time Mr Wolf’. Mr Wolf asks, “What’s the first sound in tree?” What’s the last sound in snail? What’s the second sound in spider?”.

Samantha King – Teacher Aide
Hi, my name is Sami and I have been a teacher aide at Jones Hill State School since 2017. I have lived in the Gympie region since I was about 2 years old. I have a beautiful four year old who will be attending Prep next year. In my spare time I like to read, shop and take my son to the park. I love every moment working at this school and can't wait for the future years to come.
JONES HILL STATE SCHOOL ART SHOW
MUSIC COUNT US IN 2019!
Music Count Us In is an event held every year across Australia and plays a vital role in fostering music education in schools, with a presence in every state and territory in the country. It offers students music participation and provides a whole-of-school engagement activity.
The program culminates in the National Celebration Day when more than half a million students sing the same song, on the same day, at the same time – the annual Program Song. It is a song written by students, for students. The 2019 Program Song is called ‘We Are’ and will involve over 745,000 students from more than 3,400 schools all around Australia celebrating the value of music education.
Jones Hill State School students are looking forward to being part of this exciting event this year and have been busily learning the song since last term. We will be singing this song as a whole school on Thursday 7th November at 12:30pm in the hall. Parents, carers and friends are very welcome to attend.
