LEADERSHIP TEAM REPORT
Hi Everyone,
Prep Orientation Day
On Thursday 28th November, our 2020 prep students will visit Jones Hill SS for their Prep Orientation morning, from 9:00am-10:00am. This visit is to welcome our new students and give them the opportunity to meet their teachers, teacher aides, spend some time in classrooms doing activities and become familiar with school.
Leadership Day
Forms went home last week for the grade 5 Leadership Day on December 2. These permission and medical forms must be filled out and returned to the office by November 22.
Prep Enrolments for 2020
If you have a child attending Prep in 2020 and would like them to attend our school, please contact our school administration staff. This may be done by phoning us on 54890555, calling into the office or via email on admin@jonehillss.eq.edu.au. Our staff can answer all of your questions and are happy to help. By adding your child to our current waiting list you will receive information regarding our Prep Transition Programs and information sessions.

If you have a year 6 student transitioning to high school next year, please ensure you have completed their enrolment forms and have booked an enrolment meeting. Students cannot attend the transition day without being enrolled. The year 7 orientation day for James Nash and Gympie High is 2 December.
Year 6 Graduation
Year 6 Graduation will take place on the evening of 9 December and will now be starting at 5.30pm. The school holds a small and respectful ceremony for students as part of the completion of primary schooling and transition to high school. This evening is for year 6 students and their family.

UPDATE FROM THE BUSINESS MANAGER
New School Sign
Recently, due to safety concerns, all manual school signs had to be lowered and must stay lowered until further notice. As the sign was very old we have decided to replace it. This Thursday we are having a new LED electronic sign installed at the front of the school. It will not be functional for a further two weeks until the power is connected. After this we will be able to bring you updates on a far more regular basis.
Student Resource Scheme
Please return your SRS form or ring the office ladies to let them know your preference on 54890555. Stationery orders for the 2020 school year will need to be confirmed very soon and we would like to have accurate numbers. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to give us a ring.

Cost for the bus is $2.50 and invoices have been emailed or sent home and permission forms have been handed out. Please return the permission slips to your teacher by Monday 25 November.

If you have been invoiced for lost reading books or lost library books, please either return the lost book or pay the invoice. If the items are not returned and invoices are not paid, then your child may not be able to participate in the end of year activities. Please contact the office if you have any questions regarding lost resources.

Student Absence
Each parent of a child who is of compulsory school age has the legal obligation to ensure their child is enrolled and attends a state school or a non-state school, on every school day for the educational program in which the child is enrolled, unless the parent has a reasonable excuse. The safety and wellbeing of students are the highest priorities for the Department. Parents need to know if their child hasn't turned up for school, and schools need to know when and why a child is absent. Parents are required to contact the school on, or prior, to a student being absent. Absences may be reported by phone, written note or by using the QParent App. State schools will be required to notify parents on the same day that any student is absent from school without explanation. The school will send out daily SMS text messages to notify parents that their child is absent and allows a reply service for you to explain the absence. Currently there are students who are on our system with unexplained absences. You will receive a letter this week regarding these absences. Please return the letter to the office with a brief explanation of what the absence was for.

LEMs
Phonics Focus: Phonemic Awareness
Phonemic Awareness is gained through a series of stages and strategies. The LEM Phonics Phonemic Awareness Strategy 5 is Phonemic Identity. This is the ability of a student to recognise and identify the same sound (phoneme) in a series of different words. For example, ask your child, “Which sound is the same in man, mop and mill? /m/ is the same.” It is important to identify the sound (/m/) that is the same, not the letter name. Always start with initial sounds before moving to end sounds and finally middle sounds.
What you can do at home:
- Which sound is the same?
Provide 3 pictures of words that begin with the same sound (ball, bed, bin). Say the words aloud and have your child repeat the words. “I can hear a sound that is the same in those words. Which sound do you hear that is the same?”
1. Repeat with other initial sounds (pen, pig, puddle).
2. Move on to end sounds (bell, girl, pickle).
3. Use middle sounds (bug, sun, cup).

MEET THE STAFF
Natasha Hooklyn – Teacher (1/2H)
Hi, my name is Natasha Hooklyn and I currently teach 1/2H. I have recently returned to Jones Hill State School after a two year stint teaching in remote Far North Queensland. I have three children, two of which attend our school and the third about to start prep in 2020. As a teacher, I have worked in many different areas such as the Gold Coast, Blackwater, Pormpuraaw and Tin Can Bay. After all the years of travel we have decided that Gympie is the place for us, we love all it has to offer! My family and I enjoy camping and four-wheel driving. We are excited to travel around Queensland these school holidays in our camper trailer to explore all that the Sunshine State has to offer.
DECORATIONS HELP
As many are aware, every year Mrs Hurren and her husband do a large Christmas light display at their home. This year they would like some help from the Jones Hill students.
If you would like to colour in a Christmas picture to be used in the display please see Mrs Hurren to pick up a sheet. The pictures will need to be returned to Mrs Hurren before the end of December so Mr Hurren can complete the display.
CHRISTMAS LIGHT FUNDRAISER
On Friday December 20, Mr and Mrs Hurren will hold a Sausage Sizzle fundraiser at their Christmas Light display to raise funds for the Jones Hill School 2020 Relay for Life Team.
They will have ice creams, cold drinks and sausages available for sale. Face painting will also be available for a small donation. The night will start at 7pm.
Everyone is welcome to come and enjoy the light display.

CAMP AUSTRALIA NEWS
Hello Everyone,
Last week at before and after school care we celebrated Environmental Week. Every day we used recycled items to make craft. One of the actives the children enjoyed the most was our sunflower gardens. We reused plastic banana containers to fill with soil and plant sunflower seeds. Then we made our own sunflowers out of cardboard and attached them to the front of our mini gardens. The children got to take their mini gardens home to show their families and watch their flowers bloom.
I would like to apologise to anyone who had trouble making a booking over the past week, there has been a few glitches on the Camp Australia website. If anyone is unable to make a booking, please call 0438051962 and the children can be added manually on our service tablet.
