Awards Night
Everyone is invited to join us for the Jones Hill Awards Night on Thursday, 5 December at 7.00pm in the hall. This is an opportunity for us to recognise and acknowledge the wonderful achievements of our students.
High School Orientation Day
On Monday some of our year 6 students attended the Gympie High and James Nash Orientation Day. As our year 6 students come to the end of their primary school lives, we wish them all best for their future endeavours and high school journey.
Leadership Day
Our year 5 students attended the Leadership Day at Gympie East SS on Monday with students from Monkland SS and Gympie East SS. The students had the opportunity to show off their leadership skills on the high ropes course and in team building activities. The children had to communicate effectively, work as a team, share ideas, encourage and support their peers, take risks and challenge themselves to meet their goals. We were very impressed with the participation and leadership our year 5 students. Jones Hill will have some fantastic leaders in year 6 next year. Below are quotes from the Monkland SS Principal, Mr Ryan and one of our year 5 teachers, Mrs Millers, about the day.
“Opportunities to learn through adventure education, like the High Ropes Challenge course, give a practical application of all the social skills we talk about and aspire to – but don’t always practice and refine. Hanging precariously off the ground in a situation of perceived risk is a great leveller and any student participating or observing can demonstrate a rich mix of courage, humility, empathy and resilience. It is a great opportunity to put ourselves and our expectations in life under the microscope.” – Ben Ryan (Monkland State School Principal)
“It was great to see leaders rise to the challenges and work together with new peers to achieve success. Watching the students interact outside of the classroom always shows another side of them and it is amazing to watch them thrive. It was a well organised and very successful day.” – Emma Millers (Year 5 Teacher)
Year 6 Graduation
Year 6 Graduation will take place on the evening of 9 December and will now be starting at 5.30pm. The school holds a small and respectful ceremony for students as part of the completion of primary schooling and transition to high school. This evening is for year 6 students and their family.
On the last Friday of school (13/12/2019), there will be no parade but we will farewell our year 6 students in the hall at 9.00am.
Report Cards
We are very proud of the achievements of our students this semester and this was evident when reading their report cards this week.
Report cards will be sent home on Wednesday 11th December. If you have any questions about your child’s learning or their progress please contact their teacher.
Break Up Day
The last day of term, Friday 13th December is Break Up Day. The teachers are looking forward to celebrating the last day of the year with their class. We will be handing out ice blocks to the classes from 2:00pm at the tuckshop.
Kind Regards,
James Watt – Principal
Stacey Seed – Deputy Principal

Student Absence
Each parent of a child who is of compulsory school age has the legal obligation to ensure their child is enrolled and attends a state school or a non-state school, on every school day for the educational program in which the child is enrolled, unless the parent has a reasonable excuse. The safety and wellbeing of students are the highest priorities for the Department. Parents need to know if their child hasn't turned up for school, and schools need to know when and why a child is absent. Parents are required to contact the school on, or prior, to a student being absent. Absences may be reported by phone, written note or by using the QParent App. State schools will be required to notify parents on the same day that any student is absent from school without explanation. The school will send out daily SMS text messages to notify parents that their child is absent and allows a reply service for you to explain the absence. Currently there are students who are on our system with unexplained absences. You will receive a letter this week regarding these absences. Please return the letter to the office with a brief explanation of what the absence was for.

LEMs
Phonics Focus: Which sounds should students learn?
Multiple Phonograms: The five ‘er’s.
There are a group of multiple phonograms known as the five ‘er’s. They are er, ir, ur, ear and wor.
- Wor is really w + or, but because the only place or can say /er/ is after w, the two sounds have been put together to say /wer/ in LEM phonics. Wor may only be used at the beginning of a word.
- Ear cannot say the sound /er/ at the end of a word or if y follows.
The five ‘er’s.
What you can do at home:
Read the words and underline the phonograms which say /er/. Not all words listed contain a multiple phonogram which says /er/.
