LEADERSHIP TEAM REPORT

Hi everyone,

School Leaders

Students in year 6 had the opportunity to run for School Captains and House Captains. They proudly, presented a speech to the year 4-6 students and we commend every student’s effort to speak in front of their peers. The year 4-6 children were part of the election process, voting for the School Captains and House Captains.

We would like to congratulate Cooper Keogh and Mackenzie Krafft who are our 2020 School Captains and the House Captains - McPaul Lucas Rehbein and Abbey Kropp, Radford Kate Fanshaw and Jayden Roberts and Doran Amelia Bailey and Matthew Bates. We wish you success in your newly elected positions and know you will represent our school with pride.

Interschool Sport

Interschool Sport started last Friday for the year 5 and 6 students. There was an overwhelming response from Gympie schools attending netball and soccer, resulting in students having to sit off and wait for a game or activity. To allow students to participate in sport, learn some skills and have fun, an additional sport has been included. Some of our students, will be bringing home a note today, to attend volleyball.

On school photo day the Jones Hill School staff will be wearing blue and raising funds to support dystonia.

Jemma Whittaker has dystonia and is a past student of Jones Hill School. Jemma has close ties to our school, volunteering her time for many school events, making resources and helping others as she deals with the day to day limitations dystonia places on her body.

As a school, we would like to show our support and appreciation to Jemma and her family by wearing blue in our staff photo.

Jones Hill School is a NUT AWARE SCHOOL

We have students attending Jones Hill School who suffer from a severe anaphylactic reaction to peanuts/tree nuts and various other foods. These reactions can be serious or even life threatening. These students need to have an EPIPEN (automatic injector device to administer adrenalin) on hand in case of an emergency at school. As educators and parents, we need to take all precautions necessary to minimize risk of a life threatening anaphylaxis. As a community we can work together to minimise risks associated with being exposed to these foods that are a trigger to such attacks.

As a school we will educate our students on Food Allergies and Healthy Foods which is incorporated into the school curriculum.

As parents we ask you not to send peanut butter on sandwiches, or Nutella (to minimize the risk from person to person contact) or any foods that contain peanut or nut ingredients, including peanut/nut oils or peanut/nut flour.

As a school and parents, we need to emphasize the importance of hygiene when eating food at home and at school by washing hands thoroughly with soap and water.

The safety of our students, your children is our highest priority.

Kind Regards,

James Watt - Principal
Stacey Seed – Deputy Principal

LEMs Parent Session

SWPBS

Last week, PR focused on before and after school routines. We discussed routines, then illustrated a sentence. Our routines include:

  • Wait quietly on the verandah until the 8:30am bell rings
  • Enter the classroom when a teacher opens the door
  • Choose a quiet activity in the classroom
  • Pack up when the 8:50am bell rings
  • Wait in the classroom until Dad or Mum (or other familiar adult) arrives at 3:00pm
  • Stay off the playground equipment before and after school

This week, PR focused on respectful behaviour at parade. The students discussed and role-played expected behaviours, such as:

  • Walk quietly in our lines to and from the hall
  • Sit quietly with our hands in our laps
  • Follow instructions given by teachers and school leaders
  • Clap politely
  • Sing the National Anthem with hands by our sides and face the flag at the front

NAPLAN QUESTIONS

There are many multiple choice questions on the NAPLAN test. Students learn how to decide which answer is the correct one by completing some working out on paper, by reading each one carefully and using a process of elimination to focus on the answer. Have a go at these NAPLAN questions:

MATHS FUN

Basic facts

Having good recall of basic facts is not the be-all and end-all of being a mathematician but it makes understanding other maths a lot easier.

A game you can play with your children to develop good recall of number facts is called Salute.

You need three players and a deck of playing cards Ace – 10.

Player 1 is the officer, whose job it is to tally the cards.

Players 2 and 3 split the shuffled deck between them.

Players 2 and 3 face each other and the officer.

The officer says salute and players 2 and 3 draw a card from their pile without looking at it and place it on their forehead so the value of the card is facing the other players. The officer then either adds the two cards or if practicing multiplication facts multiplies the two cards. The officer tells players 2 and 3 the total. The first player to guess what card they have is the winner of that round and gets both cards. The first to collect all the cards is the overall winner of the game.

e.g. Player 2 draws a 5 but only player 3 and the officer can see it. Player 3 draws a 7 but only player 2 and the officer can see it. The officer says 35. Player 2 has to think 7 x ? = 35, Player 3 has to think 5 x ? = 35. Player 2 calls out 5 and gets to keep the 5 and the 7 card.

MEET THE STAFF

Anneka Crombie – Teacher 1/2C

My name is Anneka Crombie. I live on a small farm with my two children with our pet goats and chickens. I love to garden and can often be found outside on the weekends, digging in my vegetable patch. I've come to Gympie from the Lockyer Valley, Ipswich and Central Queensland and have taught every grade from Prep to Year 8 in my sixteen years of teaching. I transferred to Widgee four years ago and have also worked in both Kia Ora and Kilkivan schools before coming to Jones Hill State School. I look forward to getting to know you and your children.

Japanese Corner

Japanese Corner にほん の コーナー

With Sensei

In Japanese we have been recently learning how to say our colours. I have been very impressed at how well students are remembering how to say the different colours in Japanese. The perfect Segway into our phrase for the week.

十人十色

Juu nin Tou iro: Ten people, ten colours

Students can you recognise the number 10 in the phrase above?

Wouldn’t the world be a boring place if we were all exactly the same? It is important to accept and embrace those that are not similar to yourself. It is people that are different to us that can teach us the most in life. The next time you are around someone who may appear to be a little different to you, challenge yourself to get to know that person better: you will be surprised at how much you actually have in common.
