LEADERSHIP TEAM REPORT

Hi everyone,

Great to see so many children and their families at the Book Fair this week. At Jones Hill, we believe reading is an essential life skill and is a main focus in our daily teaching and learning. A love of books and reading is something we promote and encourage in all of our students.

Parent Teacher Interviews

Parent teacher interviews will be conducted this term. This is a great opportunity to discuss your child’s achievement, responsible learning behaviour, their progress and goals for improved learning and achievement in the future. Teachers will be sending home a note, so you can choose a date and time for an interview. Report cards will be sent home at the end of term 2.

Bullying No Way! National Day Against Violence

Jones Hill students, staff and our families are asked to wear orange on Friday 20th March to show our support for Bullying No Way! National Day Against Violence. This year is the 10th Anniversary of this important day and we will make a stand together to say NO to bullying and violence.

NAPLAN Online Update

Our students in Years 3 and 5 will be undertaking NAPLAN testing online in May this year for the first time. Moving to NAPLAN online brings many advantages including a test design that offers test items tailored to students’ knowledge and ability.

We will also be participating in a national practice test on 28 March. This is an excellent opportunity to fine tune any technical and logistical needs, as well as familiarise students and teachers with the online testing process.

Parents and caregivers of children in these NAPLAN year levels will need to be aware of important information relating to privacy, which can be found on the NAPLAN Online Queensland website’s parent information page.

Protecting Your Students Privacy with NAPLAN Online

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) assesses students in writing, conventions of language (spelling, grammar and punctuation), reading and numeracy.

The data gathered from NAPLAN provide important information to improve teaching and learning practices in schools.

Please click the link below to get a copy of the NAPLAN Online and Protecting Privacy Policy.

Cross Country

The Jones Hill Cross Country will be run for all students, including preps on Monday 30th March on the bottom oval. Preps will run at 9:15am, followed by the students born 2010, 2009, 2008 and 2007. These students will be timed and may reach nomination for District Cross Country. The students born 2014 (excluding preps), 2013, 2012 and 2011 will run starting at 1:45pm on the bottom oval. Please ensure your child is wearing their house shirt on this day – Radford (red), McPaul (blue) and Doran (yellow). Parents/guardians are welcome to come along and cheer on the runners.

2020 P&C

Last night parents, staff and community members enjoyed a delicious BBQ before attending the Annual General Meeting for the P&C. Congratulations to the new office bearers.

We are fortunate to have a highly motivated, active and skilled P &C dedicated to working in support of our school community and students. Our P&C’s dedication has seen substantial funding towards much needed resources for our students and school. We encourage you to become an active member of our school community by helping with fundraising, helping in the classroom, volunteering in the Tuckshop or helping in our gardens. Every effort is valued. Involvement in our P&C and our school provides a lasting positive example to our children on the value and fulfilment of volunteering within your community.

P&C meetings are held on the second Tuesday of each month starting at 6:30 pm in the library. All welcome.

P&C Cupcake Fundraiser

On Monday 23 March, we will be holding a Cupcake Fundraiser to raise money for this year’s Canberra Trip. Students will be able to purchase cupcakes and brownies for $2.00 each from the tuckshop at both breaks. Donations are greatly appreciated and can be dropped at the office Monday morning.

Headlice

It has come to our attention that some students in the school may have head lice. It is not unusual for children to have this condition as lice are often transferred from child to child at play.

Please check your child/ren for head lice as it is most important that the condition be treated as soon as possible to reduce discomfort and minimise the risk of passing them on to others.

An effective method of detecting head lice is to:

  • Cover the entire scalp with white hair conditioner
  • Divide the hair into four sections
  • Comb hair from the root to tips using a fine tooth comb
  • After each stroke wipe the comb onto a white tissue
  • Check comb and tissue for head lice

Treatment:

  • There are many treatments available both medicated and natural.
  • Always repeat the process after 7 days to effectively kill the cycle.
  • Wash bed linen and clothes in warm water.
  • Clean all brushes and combs.

Prevention:

  • Avoid head to head contact.
  • Keep long hair tied back or in plaits.
  • Don’t share brushes, combs, hats or pillows.

Kind Regards,

James Watt – Principal
Stacey Seed – Deputy Principal

For those who are not up to date with their payments and are not on a payment plan, please give me a ring if you are having any difficulty in paying your invoices. It is very important that we keep these payments current as the school is required to pay for the trip in advance.

The flu vaccine is not compulsory but advisable for those attending our camp. Current flu vaccines may help your child avoid becoming rather ill thus affecting their enjoyment of the trip.

Please click on the links below for the permissions, medical and menu forms for the Canberra Trip 2020.

BOOK FAIR

ENCHANTED FOREST - LET YOUR IMAGINATION GROW

Parents, Carers and Families

Reading for pleasure unlocks the power of information and imagination and helps children discover who they are. Here’s what you can do to help children develop stronger reading skills and a love for reading:

  • Set the example. Let children see you read.
  • Have a collection of books in your home. Update this collection routinely to keep up with changing tastes and reading skills.
  • Support our school’s Book Fair. Allow your children to choose their own books to read.

The theme of our Scholastic Book Fair is Enchanted Forest, where we hope you will let their imagination grow!

It’s a fun reading event that brings the books kids want to read right into our school. It’s a wonderful selection of engaging and affordable books for every reading level. Please make plans to visit our Book Fair and be involved in shaping your child’s reading habits.

Book Fair dates: Monday, 9th – Friday, 13 March, 2020
Shopping hours: 8am – 4pm; Before School, 1st Break and After School

Special activities: Enter “Guess How Many Pages in the Book” Competition for your chance to win one of 6 $10.00 vouchers to spend at your Book Fair.

We look forward to seeing you and your family at our Book Fair! Remember, all purchases benefit our school.

Thank you.

Library

SWPBS

In week 7, Jones Hill students are focussing on being respectful in the library. Being respectful in the library is working quietly, following instructions and being responsible for books, computers and equipment. When we are respectful in the library, it is an enjoyable learning environment for all students, staff and visitors.

It feels - safe, quiet, orderly and calm.

It sounds - considerate, friendly, respectful, welcoming and quiet.

It looks – organised and respectful.

Routines include:

  • Line up quietly outside, behind yellow line before entering the Library.
  • Following instructions given by teachers and school staff.
  • Give way to staff at door.
  • Walk through the Library.
  • Use quiet voices.
  • Be respectful and quiet for other groups using Learning Areas.
  • Treat books and resources/computers in the library with care.
  • Library bags to be used when borrowing to protect books from loss and damage.
  • Sit and read – enjoy the Library books.
  • Leaving library during borrowing/sessions – line up quietly between coloured dots on carpet and away from the door entry.

PUPPETEERS VISIT

Last Tuesday, puppeteers Brett and Elissa from Larrikin Puppets entertained students from 2B, 2MD and 2/3W. Everyone who saw the show was so excited to meet a large variety of puppets and join in singing and dancing along to songs about friendship and being kind. The puppet show fits in with our learning in our technology unit ‘It’s Showtime’ in which we are going to create a puppet with moving parts and present a small skit to our peers. After the show, Puppeteers Brett and Elissa brought out lots of different kinds of puppets and demonstrated the different ways they make the puppets move as well as how they are made and what materials they are made from. Everyone had a great time and learned a lot about puppets!

MATHS AT JONES HILL STATE SCHOOL

As was stated in the newsletter several weeks ago, open-ended questions require more than remembering facts and may have several acceptable answers.

I have included some more questions. See how you and you children answer the following examples. These questions are for developing understanding of volume (how much space an object occupies, measured in m3) and capacity (how much a vessel can contain, measured in L).

Lower level

Design and make a container out of card that will hold 30 marbles without much space left over.

Middle level

A cubic structure is made out of 27 cubes. Draw what it could look like.

Upper level

Find a rock with a volume of 100cm3. Hint – volume can be measured through displacement.

MEET THE STAFF

Nicki Smoothey – Teacher Aide PB

My name is Nicki Smoothey. I have been a local in Gympie since I was three years old, however since completing my schooling here, I have lived in various places from Townsville to Bargara to Emerald and recently Yeppoon. I have two beautiful boys that keep me very busy, Lachie (10) and Zac (8). As a family we love our sport. We enjoy going to the State of Origin, watching the Broncos play and are keen members of the Brisbane Heat. I enjoy going on cruises (with and without the kids) and don’t mind a game of golf.

I am very fortunate to be able to work with such lovely teachers, staff and students at Jones Hill State School. For me, work is my happy place. I look forward to seeing you all around the school.

Japanese Corner

With Sensei

We have been having a SENSEI-tional time in Japanese this week with our Japanese speeches. It is extremely rewarding and heart-warming for me to see the students speak so well in front of the class - in Japanese!

The students have been able to express in Japanese their name, age, grade, what they like, what they don’t like, where they live and where they were born. I am quite surprised at how many students chose a monkey as an animal that they liked. If you see me around, ask me the story about how a monkey stole my packet of chips when I was in Japan.

Speaking of monkeys, here is a great Japanese proverb that I often use which involves monkeys.

Saru mo ki kara ochiru: Even Monkeys fall from trees

It means that we all make mistakes. Every one of us has made some kind of mistake or failed at something at some stage in our lives. However, it is how we respond to these mistakes that make us the people that we are. It is completely ok to make mistakes, just try your best to learn something from it. Sometimes the bigger the mistake, the more we can learn.

RELIGIOUS INSTRUCTION

Queensland state schools embrace a multitude of cultural, religious and non-religious beliefs. Under the Education (General Provisions) Act 2006, schools are to provide Religious Instruction (RI) if approached by a faith group seeking to provide RI and students of that faith attend the school.

RI informs students about the beliefs and values of a particular religion. It is delivered by volunteers of a faith group using instructional materials approved by that faith group. RI is required to be consistent with legislation and Department of Education policies and procedures.

All RI instructors must hold a blue card and participate in compulsory Student Protection and Code of Conduct training. RI instructors are only entitled to deliver the RI program outlined below. A school staff member will be present during the delivery of RI.

Participation in RI is not compulsory. Any student (except Prep students) may participate in RI if a parent has provided written instructions to the school.

Students are allocated to RI based on information provided by parents on the completed Application for student enrolment unless other written instructions have been provided to the school.

Note: This consent remains in effect unless the parent informs the school otherwise in writing.

A description of the RI options available at this school is provided below.

Christian RI

Title of authorised program:

The providers of Christian RI use authorised program resources and are committed to best-practice programs that have been reviewed by independent curriculum experts. The most popular Christian RI program resources in use in Queensland state schools are: Connect, Beginning with God and Big Questions (all published by Christian Education Publications) and GodSpace (published by Burst Christian Resources).

Beginning with God is a one-year program consisting of 40 lessons that introduces students to the key themes of the Bible and the Christian faith. Children engage with the themes through music, drama, reading and writing, puzzle-solving, drawing and asking questions.

The seven main themes for the lessons are:

God and his world
A troubled world and God’s remedy (includes 2 Easter lessons)

Jesus, God’s Son, is always with us
Jesus cares for people
Responding to Jesus and God
People in God’s unfolding plan
God’s plan fulfilled (with 4 lessons for Christmas)

https://cepconnect.com.au/images/uploads/BWG-Syllabus-all.pdf

Big Questions is designed for students in their last year of primary school. Over two consecutive school semesters, the program explores concepts such as ‘What is God really like?’, ‘What’s gone wrong with the world?’, ‘Does God really care about me?’, ‘What’s the purpose of my life?’ and ‘How will I make choices about my future?’. Lessons include reading and discussion of key Bible verses.

https://cepconnect.com.au/images/uploads/Big-Questions-Syllabus.pdf

Connect is a three-year program presented across three levels of schooling – infants, lower primary and upper primary. The lessons are Bible based covering Bible history from creation to God’s ultimate purpose. Each lesson introduces concepts, themes and major characters from the Old and New Testaments. Lessons also cover key Christian events such as Easter and Christmas. Students engage with the concepts through music, drama, reading and writing, puzzle-solving, drawing and asking questions.

https://cepconnect.com.au/images/uploads/Connect-scope-and-sequence-all.pdf

GodSpace comprises a three year curriculum for children aged 4 to 12 years and is designed to introduce the Bible and the core beliefs common to all mainstream Christian denominations. GodSpace is presented across four age groups engaging children through games, puzzles, memory verses, use of puppets and singing:

Explorers, for children ages 4-6 years
Adventurers, for children ages 6-8 years
Navigators, for children ages 8-10 years
Voyagers, for children ages 10-12 years.

Participating faith groups

Local Christian Churches come together to offer Christian RI on a cooperative and non-denominational basis. These local Churches may, amongst others, include Anglican, Australian Christian Churches, Baptist, Catholic, Churches of Christ, Lutheran, Presbyterian, Salvation Army and Uniting Churches.

Outline of your Faith Group’s Aims and Goals

The aim of Christian RI is to inform students about the basic beliefs of the Christian faith from a non-denominational perspective.

Outline of lesson structure

Christian RI may involve a variety of up-to-date teaching methods including storytelling, prayer, music, drama, craft, activity books, games, quizzes, video clips and puppet shows. Program resources are written by professional educators and are age-appropriate.

Amount of time for lesson per week

Typically 30 minutes per week.

The information provided above is available from:

General Statement about RI is published on the Department’s website at the link below then scroll down to the last dot point under “Supporting Documents”.
