LEADERSHIP TEAM REPORT

Dear parents and caregivers,

Term 2 has started in a very different fashion. I would like to start by congratulating all of our families for the way you have handled this change and engaged with the at home learning. There have been many examples of systems online not coping with the huge demand. We are fortunate as we have been able to provide both electronic and paper based learning. Thank you for the way you have tackled this and kept us in touch. The kids at school have been working through the same work as we all face this new reality of life dealing with the virus.

We have tried to make staff available to offer support for you working at home and so far this seems to be working well.

Attendance protocols

The state requires us to still provide daily attendance reporting. Our staff have done an amazing job in contacting you and recording the students who are learning at home. Students who need to attend school are being recorded daily.

If we have not heard from you regarding working at home, you will receive an SMS advising the absence. Please reply to this message to let us know you are working at home or not engaging with the work.

Thank you for your continued support.

A reminder that the only students who are able to attend school are those of essential workers. An essential worker is defined as someone who is required to attend work.

While I appreciate that students are missing their friends and it is difficult completing the work at home, we are still in the isolation phase of the virus and need to continue to adhere the government guidelines.

Please ensure you are only sending your children to school if absolutely necessary. We are endeavouring to keep the social distancing and hygiene protocols in place to maintain student and staff welfare. The quicker we do this the quicker the restrictions can be removed.

Over the break there are a couple of staffing updates:

Mrs Lewis will not be returning to Jones Hill School for family reasons. Mrs Cuschieri will be taking the class for the rest of the year. We look forward to welcoming her to the school and learning with the 1L students.

Mrs Crombie will be on sick leave this term. Mr Shannon has come on board to support the 1/2C students in Mrs Crombie’s absence.

Mr Lidbetter will join Mrs Crow on the 5CL class on Fridays.

I would again like to thank you for the support you have given us during these times. Our staff have really appreciated the fantastic comments and thoughts you have shared with them.

ANZAC Day Ceremony

On Friday, 24th April at approximately 9:00am we will be live streaming our ANZAC Day Ceremony on the school Facebook page. We would love to see students take part at school and at home. Students at school will watch the ceremony in their classrooms and we would encourage students at home to join in the viewing. During these challenging times, it is important to remember and acknowledge the sacrifices that were made by so many, for our country.

Kind Regards,

James Watt - Principal
Stacey Seed – Deputy Principal

WELLBEING

During these extraordinary times it has never been more important for us all to look after our wellbeing. Mental Health awareness is going to be very important over the coming months as we are all making significant changes to our lives and routines.

To assist parents and carers to talk to their children about Coronavirus and support their wellbeing, the department has developed advice below.

This fact sheet below contains information to help parents and carers access the advice and support that they may need.

AT HOME COOKING AND LUNCH BOX IDEAS

Chocolate Cookies

INGREDIENTS

  • 10 dates, pitted, finely chopped
  • 60ml (1/4 cup) boiling water
  • 90g (1 cup) rolled oats
  • 400g can chickpeas, drained, rinsed
  • 45g (1/2 cup) desiccated coconut
  • 75g (1/3 cup) solidified coconut oil, melted, cooled
  • 2 tablespoons cocoa powder, plus extra to flatten
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

METHOD

  • Step 1
Preheat oven to 180C /160C fan forced and line 2 baking trays with baking paper. Place the dates in a heatproof bowl and cover with water. Set aside for 2 minutes to soften. Use a fork to coarsely mash.
  • Step 2
Process the oats in a food processor and until chopped. Add the dates, chickpeas, coconut, coconut oil, cocoa powder, baking powder, egg and vanilla. Process to combine. Transfer to a bowl and set aside for 30 minutes to allow to thicken.
  • Step 3
Roll level tablespoons of the mixture into balls and place on the prepared trays. Dip the tines of a fork in cocoa to prevent sticking, and press into each cookie first one way and then the other (biscuits should be 1cm thick). Keep dipping the fork into cocoa as needed.
  • Step 4
Bake cookies for 12 minutes. Cool on the tray for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely. Store in an airtight container for up to 4 days, (biscuits will become softer).

WEEK 1

Lining up Before School and After Break times

An orderly time where students can hear messages and transition with respect. Visitors to the school can see how respectful and responsible students are.

In Prep we have been practising being respectful at the end of break times. When we hear the bell, we move to our table area quickly, sit and wait quietly.

We get ready to listen to messages from our teachers and then transition into our classrooms.

We are respectful when we listen to instructions quietly and line up by looking at the teacher and waiting for instructions.

Transitioning means:

  • Be an active listener and follow instructions
  • Follow adult directions.
  • Respect personal space and property of others.
  • Line up quietly and walk to class quietly and safely.
  • Use the toilet areas respectfully.
  • Follow the school’s transition routine.

Week 2

Feeling Safe In the Playground

Social skills, getting on with others, listening to others. . .

The playground is one of Prep’s favourite places to be. Working together and getting on with others is how we practise being respectful. Understanding that the choices we make may hurt or upset others in the same play space. Prep practise safety when they stay out of the out of bounds areas, use the equipment the right way and by following the teacher’s instructions.

FROM THE TUCKSHOP

The tuckshop will operate slightly differently for the first five weeks of term 2. Tuckshop will be open on Friday weeks 2, 3, 4, 5 first break. There will be no tuckshop for the first week, however a pre-order form for lunches will be sent home Wednesday, 23 April. This form needs to be returned before Tuesday 28 April with money to the school office. The form will have the food that is available for lunch on Friday 1 May. Please contact the office if you have any questions.

There will be no ice blocks on Friday afternoons.

Message from Commonwealth Bank

The health, safety and wellbeing of our communities and our people remains our highest priority. Due to the ongoing uncertainty surrounding coronavirus, the School Banking program will remain on hold. We will continue to monitor the situation and keep you informed with any updates including how we will be managing Dollarmite tokens for students.
