LEADERSHIP TEAM REPORT

Dear parents and caregivers,
PREP 2021
If you have a child attending Prep in 2021 and would like them to attend our school, please contact our school administration staff. This may be done by phoning us on 54890555, calling into the office or via email on admin@jonehillss.eq.edu.au. Our staff can answer all of your questions and are happy to help. We do accept out-of-catchment enrolments and last year all of our out-of-catchment students were able to attend Jones Hill State School. By adding your child to our current waiting list you will receive information regarding our Prep Transition Programs and information sessions.
Social Distancing Restrictions
Although students are able to be near each other in classrooms, we are still under the direction from Qld Health to adhere to social distancing rules for adults. Therefore, we are restricting adult contact in school, by asking parents/carers to not enter classrooms and to drop off and pick up children in safe locations, outside the school gates. Thank you for your assistance in helping to keep everyone safe.
Hygiene Measures
We will continue to implement strict hygiene measures to keep our students and staff safe. The following hygiene procedures will be followed at school.
- regular handwashing and hand sanitising, particularly before and after eating, and after going to the toilet
- encouraging students and staff to cough or sneeze into their elbow
- increased cleaning of school classrooms, particularly high frequency touch points including water fountains or bubblers
- regular cleaning of play equipment and materials
- water bottles for personal use
Report Cards
Due to the learning at home and at school situation at the end of term 1 and half of term 2, the reporting process will be adjusted. Report cards will be sent home on Friday 31st July (week 3, term 3) and teachers will be reporting on term 1 assessments that were completed and term 2 modified assessments.
Report cards will also have achievement and effort ratings only for English, Mathematics, Science, PE, Music and LOTE (Japanese). Comments will be included for Behaviour and Overall Comments. Absences will not be included on the semester 1, 2020 report card.
High School Enrolments
Gympie High State School and James Nash State High School are requesting Jones Hill year 6 student enrolments and expression of interests by the end of term 2, Friday 26th June. Parents and students are asked to collect an enrolment package from their teacher. Both high schools offer scholarships and these applications need to be submitted to the high school. Students and parents can ask their teacher about the scholarships. More detailed information about each high school is in this newsletter.
We would suggest that parents follow the high schools on Facebook and visit the websites. This allows you an insight into the high schools, their culture, how they operate, upcoming events, transition dates for 2021 year 7 students and date claimers.
Containers Please
Keep bringing in your containers for recycling. All plastic bottles, aluminium cans, tetra packs can be dropped off to the office. Glass bottles can be brought in by adults only.
The Jones Hill SS community is doing their part to reduce landfill and keep our waterways clean. Thank you to all of our families and students for supporting this very worthy cause.
Kind Regards,
James Watt - Principal
Stacey Seed – Deputy Principal

MEET THE STAFF
Kelly Rozynski
I am a local of the Gympie region having grown up in Imbil. I attended Mary Valley State College until grade 10 and James Nash for years 11 and 12. I went to university in Toowoomba.
I have been teaching for 11 years with five of those years being here at Jones Hill State School. I have also taught at Doomadgee State School and Cloncurry State School. My favourite thing about being a teacher is spending time with children and watching them grow and improve over the school year.
I also enjoy travelling overseas and have been to 20 different countries. In 2017, my sister and I spent 12 weeks travelling around the world and went to a range of countries including Greece, France, Canada, USA and Mexico.
When I am not at work I am usually spending time with my family, mountain bike riding or kayaking. I have a dog named Rosco and a cat named Murphy.
JAPANESE CORNER
With Sensei
I would just like to start off by saying how tremendous all of the students are doing with their Hiragana Belts. We see most students have received their AKA OBI (Red Belt) and are already looking to go much further beyond this. It makes me so proud to see the students take such a passionate interest in the language that is so close to my heart.
The way to becoming a great reader of Japanese or anything in life is best summed up by this Japanese idiom:
ichi nichi ippo
One day one step
This Japanese idiom encourages us to take one step a day toward our goals. As long as you are working towards your goals, it doesn’t matter how long it takes, just as long as you are moving in the right direction.
Students: keep up the truly SENSEI-tional work with your Hiragana Belts. You are doing a truly awesome job!!
Have a great holiday, everyone. See you in term 3.
Stay Japanesey

MATHS AT JONES HILL STATE SCHOOL
Start:
Below is a warm up game that is fun to play and a great way to practice operate/calculate skills. This warm up focuses on students’ efficient use of mental addition strategies. Students can use efficient strategies for adding single and 2-digit numbers and personal strategies for playing the game.
Students may use inefficient strategies for adding in the beginning, including the use of finger counting. As students grow in confidence, they will begin to use more efficient strategies.
Guiding Questions:
How can you add your numbers efficiently?
Is there a strategy that helps you to get more repeated answers?
Cross Out Singles
Big Idea:
Operate/Calculate
Suits: Years 2-6
Materials: Paper, pencils, whiteboard, 6 sided
die
On the whiteboard or a piece of paper, draw a 3x3 grid with a circle above each column, to the right of each row and one diagonal. Each player does the same on their paper.
To Play: Explain that:
- The teacher/leader will roll the die. After each roll, players enter the number rolled in to any one of their boxes.
- There will be nine rolls. Players will enter numbers on the grid until all spaces are filled.
- Players add the numbers in each row, column and diagonal, writing the sum for each line in the circles.
- Players will tick sums that appear more than once, and cross out sums that occur only once (singles). See below.
- Sums that are ticked are added to produce a ‘total score’ for the game. The player with the highest score wins.
This game can be modified and extended or simplified for younger learners by:
- Using a 6 sided die marked 1, 2, 3, 1, 2, 3
- Changing the board to a 2x2 grid
- Ticking the sums that occur more than once. The player with the most ticks wins.
Extend the game by:
- Playing with a 10 sided die
- Changing the board to a 4x4 grid
- Using fraction and decimal dice

- Play fairly
- Include others

LEMS NEWS
Week 4
Phonics Focus: Which sounds should students learn?
The Phonograms.
The English language has 42 sounds represented by 75 phonograms. In LEM Phonics, phonograms are divided into: Single Phonograms, Multiple Phonograms and Successive Seventeen Phonograms.
Because some phonograms can say more than one sound, a number code is used to represent which sound that phonogram is saying in a particular word. All vowels say more than one sound.
What you can do at home:
Mark the correct number above each underlined a.
cat make fast talk ball was want class
Mark the correct number above each underlined e.
