LEADERSHIP TEAM REPORT

Dear parents and caregivers,

Canberra

A letter will come home this week to students attending the 2020 Canberra Trip to explain what changes will be made in light of the COVID-19 restrictions.

Social Distancing Restrictions

Although students are able to be near each other in classrooms, we are still under the direction from Qld Health to adhere to social distancing rules for adults. Therefore, we are restricting adult contact in school, by asking parents/carers to not enter classrooms and to drop off and pick up children in safe locations, outside the school gates. Thank you for your assistance in helping to keep everyone safe.

Hygiene Measures

We will continue to implement strict hygiene measures to keep our students and staff safe. The following hygiene procedures will be followed at school.

  • regular handwashing and hand sanitising, particularly before and after eating, and after going to the toilet
  • encouraging students and staff to cough or sneeze into their elbow
  • increased cleaning of school classrooms, particularly high frequency touch points including water fountains or bubblers
  • regular cleaning of play equipment and materials
  • water bottles for personal use

Sick Students

It is essential that you keep your child home from school if they are unwell. In accordance with Queensland Health Directions parents or carers of any child showing signs of illness will be asked to collect them immediately from the school. If your child is being tested for CO-VID, please inform the school by contacting the office on 54 890555. We thank you for your support and understanding with these procedures.

Read-a-thon

Jones Hill students will be participating in a Read-a-thon, fundraising for our P&C. All students who raise $10 or more will receive a prize (Show bag). The Read-a-thon will be run during Book Week 24th August – 28th August. This is a great way to encourage our children to enjoy reading and to share in their love of books.

There will also be competitions running in the library, during Book Week with some great prizes for the winners. Students can start getting sponsors (click on the link for the Read-a-thon information and forms) and let’s get ready for some super reading during Book Week!

Report Cards

Due to the learning at home and at school situation at the end of term 1 and half of term 2, the reporting process will be adjusted. Report cards will be sent home on Friday 31st July (week 3, term 3) and teachers will be reporting on term 1 assessments that were completed and term 2 modified assessments.

Report cards will also have achievement and effort ratings only for English, Mathematics, Science, PE, Music and LOTE (Japanese). Comments will be included for Behaviour and Overall Comments. Absences will not be included on the semester 1, 2020 report card.

Kind Regards,

James Watt – Principal
Stacey Seed – Deputy Principal

PREMIER’S READING CHALLENGE 2020

Let’s keep reading!

All students are invited to join in the Premier’s Reading Challenge.

The challenge has four weeks to go, finishing on Friday August 28. All students who participate will receive a certificate.

The Reading Centre has partnered with Channel Nine to deliver reading @home TV to support language and literacy development for children in Kindergarten to Year 3. Although students are now back in the classroom, these lessons are a great reading resource. Episodes are available on the department’s YouTube channel so they can continue to be used by students and parents.

MEET THE STAFF

Katrina Beyer

Hi Everyone. In October this year I will have been a teacher at Jones Hill for 20 years. My two children, Dana (20) and Liam (17) attended primary school here also. Having young adult children doesn’t make me feel old, it’s seeing students I’ve taught coming back as parents that does that!

I’ve primarily taught Prep and Year 1 at Jones Hill. Earlier in my career, in Bundaberg, I taught kindergarten and preschool and adults studying for their TAFE Childcare and Education Diploma. There are MANY things I love about teaching the “little people” but instilling a love of learning and acceptance of others is overarching. Teaching children about language and reading is a great passion of mine and I’m thrilled to see my preps soaking up all of the reading skills and knowledge we work on daily and “taking off” as readers.

My leisure time is spent keeping active with walking, running, hiking etc. and catching up with friends. Since building a new home last year I have an indoor plant addiction, so tending to that also keeps me busy. In the future I have plans to see a lot of Australia and to travel overseas.

Over the years, as children, families and staff have come and gone at Jones Hill, I couldn’t imagine doing anything else or being anywhere else. See you around at our great school!

RELAY FOR LIFE

For the last eight years Jones Hill School has entered a team in the Gympie Relay for Life event.

This year, Gympie Relay for Life will be joining the state-wide virtual Relay, which will be streamed online on 10 October. This Relay will focus on what makes Relay for Life so special to all those involved and bring Relayers across Queensland together to fight back against cancer.

We know many of our students will still want to be involved by fundraising to help the Cancer Council with research and support those with Cancer and their families.

The school will be holding a mini relay event on Wednesday September 16 from 1pm to 6pm. To register your child for this event click on the link below. Registration is free, however it would be great if all participants could raise at least $20 to donate towards this worthy cause.

JONESY’S 5 CENT CHALLENGE

Each year Jonesy, our school Relay for Life Mascot, runs a class competition to raise funds for the school’s Relay Team. Money is collected in the classrooms from August 1 to August 31. The class that raises the most money will be presented with the annual trophy on parade, Friday 6 September.

So start collecting your small change ready for the August challenge. Any denomination accepted.

WANTED

If you have any of the below containers or similar with lids (black or white) please drop them to the school office.

JAPANESE CORNER

With Sensei

Term Three in Japanese is humming along very nicely. We already have our first students achieve their Kuro Obi (Black Belt) in the Hiragana reading system. Well done to those people. Also well done to everyone who has been trying their best in Japanese. It is very rewarding for me to see you enjoying and trying your best in a language that is so close to my heart.

Here is this week’s Japanese phrase:

Jigou Jitoku

This loosely translates as ‘You act, you profit’. In English we have a similar saying which goes “You reap what you sow.” If you put in the effort now you will be rewarded later in life. If you honour your future self and do the hard work now, the future you will be very happy that you did.

Open Ended Questions

During the course of a normal school day teachers ask many questions. One way of categorising questions is to describe them as either ‘open’ or ‘closed’.

Closed questions are those that simply require an answer or a response to be given from memory.

Open questions are those that require a student to think more deeply and to give a response which involves more than recalling a fact or reproducing a skill.

The goal of using open-ended questions with mathematics is for our students to think, to learn, to analyse, to criticise and to be able to solve unfamiliar problems and justify their thinking.

Open-ended questions can have more than one answer. Have a look at the following questions, how many answers can you work out?

SCHOOL WIDE POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR SUPPORT

Week 3- Respect – disruptive

Being non- disruptive in classroom means:

  • Be an active listener and follow instructions
  • Follow adult directions.
  • Respect personal space and property of others.
  • Be co -operative and join in all class activities.
  • Completing set work
  • Respecting the rights of others to learn

In 6G, the class identified they need to monitor their noise to reduce disruption to their and others learning. They have set this as their whole class behaviour goal. They receive a marble in the jar each time they keep their voices down during group discussions, between transitions and reduce their calling-out. When they work as a team and reach their goal (the first line on the jar), they will receive a whole class reward.

Week 4- Relationships – classrooms and learning settings

Having good relationships means:

  • Co-operating
  • Accepting differences, strengths, challenges
  • Helping others
  • Participating
  • Listening
  • Recognising rights and responsibilities

In Year 6, we learn to recognise our own strengths and weaknesses. By recognising our weaknesses, it helps us to set goals for improvement and ask for help from our peers or an adult. The recognition of strengths allows us to step up, be a role model, and support others. We work more effectively in teams by accepting our differences and drawing on one another’s strengths to accomplish a task.
