LEADERSHIP TEAM REPORT

Dear parents and caregivers,

Gympie High School Scholarship Winners

We are happy to announce that three of our year 6 students Mackenzie (Music), Kate (Academic) and Cooper (Sport) will be on receiving a Scholarship from Gympie State High School for 2021. Congratulations to you all, we know you have worked hard to achieve this award and will do well as you head off to High School.

Social Distancing Restrictions

Although students are able to be near each other in classrooms, we are still under the direction from Qld Health to adhere to social distancing rules for adults. Therefore, we are restricting adult contact in school, by asking parents/carers to not enter classrooms and to drop off and pick up children in safe locations, outside the school gates. Thank you for your assistance in helping to keep everyone safe.

Hygiene Measures

We will continue to implement strict hygiene measures to keep our students and staff safe. The following hygiene procedures will be followed at school.

  • regular handwashing and hand sanitising, particularly before and after eating, and after going to the toilet
  • encouraging students and staff to cough or sneeze into their elbow
  • increased cleaning of school classrooms, particularly high frequency touch points including water fountains or bubblers
  • regular cleaning of play equipment and materials
  • water bottles for personal use

Sick Students

It is essential that you keep your child home from school if they are unwell. In accordance with Queensland Health Directions parents or carers of any child showing signs of illness will be asked to collect them immediately from the school. If your child is being tested for CO-VID, please inform the school by contacting the office on 54 890555. We thank you for your support and understanding with these procedures.

Kind Regards,

James Watt – Principal
Stacey Seed – Deputy Principal

FROM THE BUSINESS MANAGER

Hi Everyone,

Due to the ever changing Covid-19 pandemic virus and recognising the safety concerns of our students and our staff, we are cancelling our Canberra Trip this year. The great news is that we have been able to secure a Rainforest and Reef Trip to Cairns in November for all those who were attending the Canberra Trip. There will be a parent meeting this Thursday night in the year 5 room at 5pm. We encourage all parents to attend to hear about the new itinerary and plans for the trip.

PREMIER’S READING CHALLENGE 2020

Let’s keep reading!

All students are invited to join in the Premier’s Reading Challenge.

The challenge has two weeks to go, finishing on Friday August 28. All students who participate will receive a certificate.

The Reading Centre has partnered with Channel Nine to deliver reading @home TV to support language and literacy development for children in Kindergarten to Year 3. Although students are now back in the classroom, these lessons are a great reading resource. Episodes are available on the department’s YouTube channel so they can continue to be used by students and parents.

RELAY FOR LIFE

For the last eight years Jones Hill School has entered a team in the Gympie Relay for Life event.

This year, Gympie Relay for Life will be joining the state-wide virtual Relay, which will be streamed online on 10 October. This Relay will focus on what makes Relay for Life so special to all those involved and bring Relayers across Queensland together to fight back against cancer.

We know many of our students will still want to be involved by fundraising to help the Cancer Council with research and support those with Cancer and their families.

The school will be holding a mini relay event on Wednesday September 16 from 1pm to 6pm. To register your child for this event click on the link below. Registration is free, however it would be great if all participants could raise at least $20 to donate towards this worthy cause.

JAPANESE CORNER

With Sensei

Minna-san Konnichiwa,

Students are still managing to do really SENSEI-tional work with their Hiragana Belts. I will be giving out a few more KURO-OBI (Black Belts) this week. If there is one thing that I would like you to take away from Japanese lessons it is summed up perfectly with the following Japanese phrase:

I no naka kaeru taikai wo shirazu.
The frog in the well doesn’t know of the great ocean.

Try new things. Sample a different kind of food or experience a new sport, hobby or pastime. Try and watch a different TV show or read a different kind of book. Try meeting or talking to someone you wouldn’t usually talk to. Trying different things broadens our horizons and expands our way of thinking. Don’t be the frog in the well, see what the great ocean has to offer!

There are so many things in this world just waiting for you to discover.

LEMS NEWS

Phonics Focus: Phonemic Awareness

Phonemic Awareness is gained through a series of stages and strategies. The Australian Curriculum shows Phonemic Awareness as essential for students to understand the relationship between speech and print and, therefore to read and write. The LEM Phonics Phonemic Awareness Strategy 3 is syllabication.

Syllabication: Is the ability to break a word into its separate syllables. All words have one or more syllables. A spoken vowel sound will manifest itself by a drop of the jaw as the word is said. This can be helpful to analyse syllables, as a clearly spoken word will have one drop of the jaw for each syllable.

Syllable awareness is a skill that can help students ‘tune in’ to the sound structure of words and can be practiced through syllable segmentation and syllable blending.

Syllable segmentation is breaking a word into its syllable chunks and is important for spelling words.

Syllable blending is listening to the syllable chunks in a word and pulling them together to make a word. This is important for reading words.

Every syllable must contain a vowel or a vowel sound. Syllable breaks can be found in spoken words each time the jaw drops open by placing your hand under your chin while a word is said aloud. For example, when we say wonderful, we can find the syllable breaks and code the word into won•der•ful.

What you can do at home:

  • Code the words: Place your hand under your chin as you say each word aloud to find the syllable breaks. Identify the vowel or vowel sound in each syllable. Code the word by writing it showing the syllable breaks with a dot (fam•i•ly). Never divide a one syllable word.

open budget recent pet insect appreciate participate laugh

  • Mirror, mirror: Use a mirror to see how many times your jaw drops as you say each word.
  • Syllable Snakes and Ladders or Monopoly: Replace a dice with word cards. Make word cards (favourite animals, fruit, sports) and use the number of syllables in a word to move forward in the game (e.g. ap•ple has two syllables and earns two jumps forward).
  • Syllable sort: Have students sort pictures from magazines into words that have 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 syllables.

MEET THE STAFF

Hello everyone. I’m Lisa Rose and I started teaching here at Jones Hill last year. This is my 14th year of teaching and I am very lucky to be teaching Arts (music, dance and drama), Choir and African Drumming here at Jones Hill. I also teach Arts at 3 other schools in the area.

Our family moved to Gympie in late 2018 after living in Brisbane for many years in a little house on a tiny block, right in the middle of a busy suburb. We now have a farm house on 40 acres of land with two dams and a creek. We have three horses that live in our paddock, a miniature dachshund named “Shady” and two cats. We also have lots of chickens, ducks and guinea fowl. Our property is home to lots of wallabies (and their super cute babies), a beautiful variety of birds including cockatoos, quail and pheasants, some very noisy possums and a few pesky goannas.

When I’m not teaching or home with my family I love drumming on my djembe, going on walks (especially the river walk), doing archery and catching up with my friends.

CONTAINERS PLEASE

Keep bringing in your containers for recycling. All plastic bottles, aluminium cans, tetra packs can be dropped off to the office. Glass bottles can be brought in by adults only.

The Jones Hill SS community is doing their part to reduce landfill and keep our waterways clean. Thank you to all of our families and students for supporting this very worthy cause.
