LEADERSHIP TEAM REPORT

Dear parents and caregivers,

Cairns Trip Update

For students in years 5 and 6 who were previously attending the Canberra Trip, the itinerary is being finalised for Cairns.

Parents will receive the updated itinerary and map of the accommodation this week following our Cairns Trip parent meeting.

Any parents yet to finalise their child’s attendance will need to do so by Friday 28 August.

Students who are on the waiting list will be offered spots on the trip once they become available, hopefully by the end of next week.

Thank you to everyone for their patience and taking up this great opportunity.

Social Distancing Restrictions

Although students are able to be near each other in classrooms, we are still under the direction from Qld Health to adhere to social distancing rules for adults. Therefore, we are restricting adult contact in school, by asking parents/carers to not enter classrooms and to drop off and pick up children in safe locations, outside the school gates. Thank you for your assistance in helping to keep everyone safe.

Hygiene Measures

We will continue to implement strict hygiene measures to keep our students and staff safe. The following hygiene procedures will be followed at school.

  • regular handwashing and hand sanitising, particularly before and after eating, and after going to the toilet
  • encouraging students and staff to cough or sneeze into their elbow
  • increased cleaning of school classrooms, particularly high frequency touch points including water fountains or bubblers
  • regular cleaning of play equipment and materials
  • water bottles for personal use

Sick Students

It is essential that you keep your child home from school if they are unwell. In accordance with Queensland Health Directions parents or carers of any child showing signs of illness will be asked to collect them immediately from the school. If your child is being tested for COVID, please inform the school by contacting the office on 54 890555. We thank you for your support and understanding with these procedures.

Kind Regards,

James Watt – Principal
Stacey Seed – Deputy Principal

PREMIER’S READING CHALLENGE 2020

Let’s keep reading!

All students are invited to join in the Premier’s Reading Challenge.

The challenge has two days to go, finishing on Friday August 28. All students who participate will receive a certificate.

The Reading Centre has partnered with Channel Nine to deliver reading @home TV to support language and literacy development for children in Kindergarten to Year 3. Although students are now back in the classroom, these lessons are a great reading resource. Episodes are available on the department’s YouTube channel so they can continue to be used by students and parents.

RELAY FOR LIFE

For the last eight years Jones Hill School has entered a team in the Gympie Relay for Life event.

This year, Gympie Relay for Life will be joining the state-wide virtual Relay, which will be streamed online on 10 October. This Relay will focus on what makes Relay for Life so special to all those involved and bring Relayers across Queensland together to fight back against cancer.

We know many of our students will still want to be involved by fundraising to help the Cancer Council with research and support those with Cancer and their families.

The school will be holding a mini relay event on Wednesday September 16 from 1pm to 6pm. To register your child for this event click on the link below. Registration is free, however it would be great if all participants could raise at least $20 to donate towards this worthy cause.

Only a few days to go! Which class will win? Classes can collect money until Monday, August 31 so keep those coins coming in and help this very worthy cause.

MATHS AT JONES HILL STATE SCHOOL

What do you notice?

What do you notice questions are used with each year level in mathematics. They are activities that give students time to think and are designed to encourage student responses.

Students observe and think about the image without discussion for about one minute. Students then share their observations and thinking.

LEMS NEWS

Phonics Focus: Phonemic Awareness

Phonemic Awareness is gained through a series of stages and strategies. The LEM Phonics Phonemic Awareness Strategy 4 is Phonemic Isolation. This is the ability of a student to recognise individual sounds (phonemes) in words and where a sound is positioned (initial, middle, final) within a word. The Australian Curriculum provides understanding of how literacy progression develops through stages and lists the following indicators which identify a student’s ability to work within the level.

  • provides a word when given a starting phoneme (p, picture).
  • consistently says the first phoneme of a spoken word (good, g).
  • listens to a group of words and indicates those that start with the same phoneme and says other words that start with that phoneme.

What you can do at home:

  • Sound sort: Select a phonogram (e.g. /r/). It is important to identify the phonogram by the sound /r/ rather than the letter name. Provide picture cards which begin with a range of sounds (e.g. picture of a house, rat, ant, rug, banana). Ask the student to sort the pictures into a pile that start with the selected sound and a pile that do not. Brainstorm other words that could be added. Move on to sorting final sounds and then middle sounds.
  • Sound Master: Say aloud a group of words beginning with the same sound (e.g. goat, good, gate, girl, get). Ask the student to identify the first sound of each word. The student should say the sound /g/ and not the letter name (gee). Brainstorm other words that could be selected.
  • What’s the Sound Mr Wolf? Play the game like, ‘What’s the Time Mr Wolf’. Mr Wolf asks, “What’s the first sound in tree?” What’s the last sound in snail? What’s the second sound in spider?”.

MEET THE STAFF

Hi, my name is Kath Rhodes and I have worked at Jones Hill State School as a teacher aide for about eight years. I have a daughter Amalie who is 16 years old and in year 11. Our house is full of animals, two dogs, two cats, chooks, birds and a wide range of wild birds that we feed.

My daughter and I like to go away in our holiday time to places that have an ocean view with friends and family. I like to cook and when I am in the mood a little gardening is always good.

CONTAINERS PLEASE

Keep bringing in your containers for recycling. All plastic bottles, aluminium cans, tetra packs can be dropped off to the office. Glass bottles can be brought in by adults only.

The Jones Hill SS community is doing their part to reduce landfill and keep our waterways clean. Thank you to all of our families and students for supporting this very worthy cause.

THANK YOU

A big thank you to Tracey Devereux who did a fabulous job taking photos for our school. We are very excited and looking to seeing the finished product.
