LEADERSHIP TEAM REPORT
Term 1 has started smoothly for our students, staff and families.
All students are to be congratulated for the way they have started the 2021 school year. Our new student leaders in year 6 are looking great with their senior shirts!
I would like to make mention of our new staff who have fitted into the Jones Hill School family so well, Claire Broadhurst on year 4, Jo Stevenson on 1/2 and Kay-Leigh Avalon in SEP.
Over the Christmas break we have had the F block and I block classrooms painted. They are looking fresh and ready for the year.
We are also creating a lower school computer lab in I block (previously Possum hollow). Work has been ongoing putting in a new door, cabling and power to allow the connectivity of new computer that are on their way. We look forward to putting this space to good use over the coming weeks.
Student numbers have reached our cap of 450 this year which is a great sign of the quality education our school delivers.
Koala Kids ran the first vacation care program over the break, which has been a huge success. Thank you to the families who have supported this new venture and congratulations to the team who have put so much time an energy into its success. The Easter program will be even better!
Koala Kids is also enjoying the highest rate of attendance since before and after school care began with Camp Australia 8 years ago.
Student Code of Conduct
Over the course of 2020, the Jones Hill State School Student Code of Conduct (SCOC) was developed. Every Queensland state school is required to have a SCOC, which details the locally agreed procedures used by school staff to support students to meet behaviour expectations critical to an effective learning environment. The SCOC includes information about school expectations and policies, consequences and processes for addressing bullying and acceptable use of technology. The SCOC replaces the Responsible Behaviour Plan for Students from the commencement of the 2021 school year.
The document is available on our school website.

Message from the Department of Transport
The Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) will soon start works to reconstruct the Normanby Overpass at the Bruce Highway in Gympie.

Social Distancing Restrictions
Although students are able to be near each other in classrooms, we are still under the direction from Qld Health to adhere to social distancing rules for adults. Therefore, we are restricting adult contact in school, by asking parents/carers to not enter classrooms and to drop off and pick up children in safe locations, outside the school gates or as arranged by the teacher. Thank you for your assistance in helping to keep everyone safe.
Hygiene Measures
We will continue to implement consistent hygiene measures to keep our students and staff safe. The following hygiene procedures are in place at school.
- regular handwashing and hand sanitising, particularly before and after eating, and after going to the toilet
- encouraging students and staff to cough or sneeze into their elbow
- increased cleaning of school classrooms, particularly high frequency touch points including water fountains or bubblers
- regular cleaning of play equipment and materials
- individual water bottles for personal use
Parent Helpers
Parent helpers can assist in classrooms as arranged with the teacher. The following measures will be in place:
- Helpers must complete the mandatory training booklet (available at the office).
- Helpers must sign in and out at the office.
- Hygiene measures need to be adhered to. Sanitising hands on entry and exit to learning spaces.
- Do not attend if sick or showing signs of illness.
- Helpers who are not the parent/carer will require a blue card (information available at the office).
Kind Regards,
James Watt - Principal

Healthy Lunchbox Week 2021
This year, Healthy Lunchbox Week will be on from 7th - 13th February!
Healthy Lunchbox Week is a Nutrition Australia initiative that aims to inspire parents and carers across Australia to create healthy lunchboxes their children will enjoy.
Did you know children consume around 30% of their daily food intake at school? Most of this comes from the contents of their lunchbox. What children eat during their day at school plays a crucial role in their learning and development.
Healthy Lunchbox Week helps families prepare healthy lunchboxes by:
- Inspiring healthy lunchbox ideas and recipes
- Ensuring a healthy lunchbox balance across core food groups
- Awareness of lunchbox food hygiene and safety
As part of Healthy Lunchbox Week, Nutrition Australia has joined forces with Life Education for Australia’s Healthiest Lunchbox competition. For more information and to enter the competition, click here.

MATHS
The Australian Curriculum Mathematics aims for students to become confident, creative uses and communicators of mathematics. At Jones Hill State School, each class uses warm up activities to engage students in practicing skills and gaining confidence.
Here is an activity that families can have fun with at home:
Ladders: Years 1-7
10-sided dice
The aim of the game is for each player to write 2-digit numbers and order them correctly.
Instructions:
- Each player draws a ladder with 6 rungs.
- Players take turns to roll the dice and use the digits to make a 2-digit number. For example, Player 1 rolls 6 and 8. He can make 68 or 86.
- Players write their chosen number in one of the spaces on their ladder.
- Players continue to roll the dice and add numbers to their ladder, keeping a sequence of smallest to biggest (bottom to top)
- The first player who fills their entire ladder is the winner.
There will be times when a player is unable to write a number on their ladder, they simply miss their turn. For example, a player with the ladder above rolls a 5 and a 6, there is nowhere to put 56 or 65, so they miss their turn.
Guiding Questions:
- What strategy did you use when choosing numbers to put on the ladder?
- How did you decide where to place your numbers?
- What are you doing now that you weren’t doing the first time you played this game?
Change it up:
- Using three dice and making 3-digit whole numbers
- Rolling two dice to make numbers with decimals, e.g. 6 and 6 are rolled. Possible numbers are 5.6 and 6.5
- Varying the number of rungs on the ladder.
- Using fewer or more dice to suit ages and abilities.
- Using a 6-sided dice.
LEMS PHONICS
LEM Phonics is the spelling program used at Jones Hill State School. The phonics program includes spelling and reading rules and phonograms.
LEM phonics lessons include teaching students to recognise the written symbols for the sounds of the English language. The letter symbols representing these sounds are called phonograms. Phonograms may consist of a single letter (d, t), called single phonograms, or a group of letters (ay, dge), called multiple phonograms.
Let’s look at single phonograms.
The letter ‘a’ has 5 sounds
Have a go at home, when reading, see how many words you can find that have the letter ‘a’ saying its first sound.
The next night, how many words can you find that have the letter ‘a’ saying its third sound.
SCHOOL WIDE POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR SYSTEM
Students have started the new school year off with great enthusiasm and it has been wonderful to see students engaged in learning and displaying respectful behaviour.
Classes have been revising our four school expectations of Safety, Learning, Respect and Relationships. Students have been discussing how these expectations are demonstrated in a variety of learning areas. Students have also been practicing transitions around the school, walking quietly in two lines and showing respect to others.
