LEADERSHIP TEAM REPORT

NAPLAN Online

Year 3 and year 5 students will be participating in the NAPLAN Online testing this year, in the areas of Writing, Reading, Language Conventions and Numeracy. The testing will be conducted over two weeks, 11th – 21st May. We will be preparing the students with practice sessions in the computer LAB during term 1 and early term 2.

Birthdays at School

Due to the number of children with allergies and medical conditions, we will be unable to give cupcakes to children when celebrating birthdays at school. Parents are able to purchase the Birthday Bucket of Ice Blocks from the tuckshop, to share with their child’s class. This is a safer dietary option for the majority of our students. The safety of our students is our priority and we appreciate your understanding and support.

Attendance

Attendance at school is essential and the only way for your child to achieve their best. We aim for 95% attendance or better for every student at Jones Hill. Schools are required to have no unexplained absences. If your child is sick please keep them at home.

Student Absence

Each parent of a child who is of compulsory school age has the legal obligation to ensure their child is enrolled and attends a state school or a non-state school, on every school day for the educational program in which the child is enrolled, unless the parent has a reasonable excuse. The safety and wellbeing of students are the highest priorities for the Department. Parents need to know if their child hasn't turned up for school, and schools need to know when and why a child is absent. Parents are required to contact the school on, or prior, to a student being absent. Absences may be reported by phone, written note or by using the QParent App. State schools will be required to notify parents on the same day that any student is absent from school without explanation. The school will send out daily SMS text messages to notify parents that their child is absent and allows a reply service for you to explain the absence.

Parents Attendance at Parades

As of next Friday, February 26 we will welcome parents of award recipients to attend parade. Please sign in on arrival, sanitise and use provided seating.

Social Distancing Restrictions

Although students are able to be near each other in classrooms, we are still under the direction from Qld Health to adhere to social distancing rules for adults. Therefore, we are restricting adult contact in school, by asking parents/carers to not enter classrooms and to drop off and pick up children in safe locations, outside the school gates or as arranged by the teacher. Thank you for your assistance in helping to keep everyone safe.

Hygiene Measures

We will continue to implement consistent hygiene measures to keep our students and staff safe. The following hygiene procedures are in place at school.

  • regular handwashing and hand sanitising, particularly before and after eating, and after going to the toilet
  • encouraging students and staff to cough or sneeze into their elbow
  • increased cleaning of school classrooms, particularly high frequency touch points including water fountains or bubblers
  • regular cleaning of play equipment and materials
  • individual water bottles for personal use

Kind Regards,

James Watt - Principal

MATHS

Students practise efficient ways to work out number problems. A fun activity that can be played at home is Secret Sums. Secret Sums is a simple but powerful warm up because it requires students to focus on the quantity of each number and not the procedure suggested by the operation sign in a number sentence. For this reason, it supports students to develop flexible mental computation strategies.

Reasoning plays a part in this task as students learn to eliminate particular combinations and search for potential addition pairs.

This activity can be adapted for all year levels. Numbers are written on a piece of paper, the adult secretly chooses two numbers from the paper and adds them.

The adult then says the ‘secret sum’ (the total). The children work to identify the original two numbers that were added to make the total.

Be aware that:

  • Children may attempt this task by using an inefficient ‘guess and check’ method. Children need to see that the number of potential addition pairs can be reduced by reasoning about the numbers, e.g. If they add to 58, the ones digits will add to 8 (or 18).
  • Children may use inefficient strategies to add 2-digit numbers, including finger counting and an over-reliance on a written column method.

Change the activity:

For younger children – use single digits.

To challenge children years 4-6 – change the operation (addition/subtraction/multiplication/division)

SCHOOL WIDE POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR SYSTEM

Over last two weeks, classes have been discussing the importance of using the toilet areas safely. This involves following personal hygiene procedures of leaving the toilets clean, washing hands thoroughly and using the hand sanitizer before entering the learning area. Class have discussed the importance of being respectful of everyone’s privacy and to respect school property.

Transitions are an everyday routine for classes. Students transition from eating areas to learning areas and from one activity to another. Classes have been practising how to have respectful transitions. This involves classes lining up in designated areas, walking quietly and following instructions. When students move around the school in a respectful manner, other classes can continue to work and learning will not be disrupted. It is wonderful to see the students transitioning quietly and proudly walking in their Jones Hill uniforms to their next learning activity.
