LEADERSHIP TEAM REPORT
Sports Day
The Jones Hill Sports Day will be on the last day of term 2, Friday, June 25. The students are busy practising their running, throwing and jumping skills in preparation for a fun-filled day of competition and doing their best. Parents are welcome to attend this event, although we are required to follow COVID restrictions. Students will need to wear their coloured shirt for Sports Day – Doran is yellow, McPaul is blue and Radford is red.
Teddy Bears’ Play Day
The Preps held our Annual Teddy Bears’ Play Day last week. The morning was attended by our 2022 Prep students who had a lovely morning full of fun teddy bear activities and games.

Social Distancing Restrictions
Although students are able to be near each other in classrooms, we are still under the direction from Qld Health to adhere to social distancing rules for adults. Therefore, we are restricting adult contact in school, by asking parents/carers to not enter classrooms and to drop off and pick up children in safe locations, outside the school gates or as arranged by the teacher. Thank you for your assistance in helping to keep everyone safe.
Hygiene Measures
We will continue to implement consistent hygiene measures to keep our students and staff safe. The following hygiene procedures are in place at school.
- regular handwashing and hand sanitising, particularly before and after eating, and after going to the toilet
- encouraging students and staff to cough or sneeze into their elbow
- increased cleaning of school classrooms, particularly high frequency touch points including water fountains or bubblers
- regular cleaning of play equipment and materials
- individual water bottles for personal use
Kind Regards,
James Watt – Principal

FROM THE BUSINESS MANAGER
Hi Everyone,
OVAL BANK LANDSCAPING
We are excited to announce that we are planning to construct an exciting new project on the oval near the hall. Jones Hill School will have its very own Outdoor Stage! The outdoor stage will be constructed on the area below the office where the tyre terraces presently are. This area will have two terraces bound by concrete form seating. The top of the outdoor stage area will have an amazing feature wall consisting of split sandstone look block features, alongside honed blocks. Three new flag poles will be installed at the same time. All going well, construction will be finished by the end of the June/July holidays. In the future, we plan to add an ANZAC designed backdrop to the stage. The size of this project makes it a great centrepiece to any of our school events from sports day to our Christmas concert. The outdoor stage is a fantastic addition to the school’s resources.

Keep reading everyone!
MATH
Open-ended questions are used to encourage students to gain deeper understanding of the question. This type of questions allows students to use a variety of strategies to form multiple answers. Open-ended questions do not require one answer but can have multiple answers. Students can engage in rich conversations around comparing and contrasting ideas and solutions for open-ended questions.
Here are some examples of open-ended questions at different levels and how they can be extended.
SWPBS
Students have been enjoying playing in our fantastic new playground. We are so grateful for our beautiful playgrounds and areas to play.

- Wait patiently for your turn
- Use the equipment safely
- Speak respectfully
- Follow instructions
- Always wear a sun safe hat
- Walk on the concrete

JAPANESE CORNER
Minna-san Konnichiwa (Hello everyone),
We have been having so much fun in years 3-6 learning how to say the months of the year in Japanese.
If you can already count to 12 or even 10 in Japanese it is really simple. It goes like this:
All you have to do is add the word 'gatsu' (pronunced guts) to the end of the number that corresponds with the relevant month.
For example: The number one in Japanese is ichi so January would be ichi-gatsu, ni means two so February would be ni-gatsu. Here is March to December:
March: San-gatsu
April: Shi-gatsu
May: Go-gatsu
June: Roku-gatsu
July: Nana-gatsu
August: Hachi-gatsu
September: Kyu-gatsu
October: Juu-gatsu
November: Juu-ichi-gatsu
December: Juu-ni gatsu
Next time I see you around, see if you can tell me your birthday month in Japanese.
Have a SENSEI-tional Week
Stay Japanesey

YEAR 5/6C NEWS
Brisbane Excursion
Recently 5/6C students went on an excursion into the Brisbane CBD for the day. The purpose of the trip was to discover the unique experiences that a city has to offer so that the students could use this first-hand knowledge to write a persuasive letter for a travel magazine. The students have to agree or disagree with the statement – the city offers more unique experiences than a country town. After an early start, our first experience of the city was the traffic! Three lanes crawling along the highway before we entered the Clem Jones Tunnel. We saw skyscrapers with a wide variety of designs and the Brisbane Wheel. We walked across the Brisbane River into the Queen Street Mall and then made our way up to Central Railway Station. Along the way we saw electric bikes, scooters, cars, buses, city cats, pedestrians and interesting art sculptures. There were escalators going down underneath shops, a three-story Hungry Jacks and some interesting fashion. We walked through arcades that had high end shops with security guards inside, crossed the road on a diagonal crossing and went up a really long escalator. We witnessed people enter and leave the train station using their Go Cards and then saw the trains as they came into the station. We saw the Eternal Flame in Anzac Square and found some familiar towns close to Gympie on the bronze screens. These carry the names of the Queensland towns that servicemen and women left to fight in battles across the world. Throughout the day we found common discussion points were on the noise, the amount of people, the traffic and the amount of building construction happening. At Southbank we looked at QPAC and the upcoming events and had a walk through the beach area. On the way home, we were lucky to be able to stop at Suncorp Stadium and look inside the gates at the field. We also saw statues of famous Queensland players and the ‘Walk of Fame’ which was plaques with every player who has worn the Queensland maroon jersey in Origin showing the number of games played, the years played and their Queensland playing number. We had an interesting day and experienced many new things, it will be interesting to see who will be persuaded by the city life!

Science Activities
This term in Science Year 5/6C students are learning about microorganisms. We have learnt about yeast and that the water temperature needs to be warm so that it activates. Yeast also plays an important role in bread making. In groups we made two loaves of bread, mixing and kneading the ingredients. Each dough mixture was left to ‘prove’ for 2 hours before we were able to knead it again. The dough then ‘proved’ for a further 2 hours before it was baked in the oven. Soon we will be using the bread that we baked to grow mould so that we can identify the best environment to store bread and minimise mould growth.

OWL AND THE PUSSYCAT
The Owl and the Pussycat is a magical musical journey for children, and represents a beautiful and intelligent collaboration between nationally-recognised artists. It is an award-winning production based on Edward Lear’s beloved childhood poem.
Children are welcomed on board a beautiful pea-green boat. They are encouraged to engage with the characters of the story, and, sometimes, they have real agency in the story, helping to sail the boat or becoming stars in the sky to guide the characters. The music, by Lisa Cheney, is designed to imbue curiosity in our young audiences, and is full of intriguing and playful sounds and instruments. Children love this work, and their parents do too!”, said writer, Kathryn Marquet.”
