We know the students will have a great time, enjoy new learning and experiences.

Cybersafety Session

The Department of Education's Cybersafety and Reputation Management team (CSRM) advises, investigates and supports schools to manage online behaviours and digital reputation issues. This term the CSRM will be running a session at Jones Hill for year 4-6 students to deliver up-to-date information about positive social media use.

The CSRM team will be visiting Jones Hill State School on Friday 6 August to conduct sessions with students in Years 4-6 and are also offering a parent and caregiver information session on Thursday 5 August at One Mile State School. The parent session is an overview of cybersafety, trending platforms, online dos and don’ts, and useful settings to be aware of. This session goes for about 45 minutes, and will allow parents to ask questions throughout. Please RSVP online if you are planning to attend:

Social Distancing Restrictions

Although students are able to be near each other in classrooms, we are still under the direction from Qld Health to adhere to social distancing rules for adults. Therefore, we are restricting adult contact in school, by asking parents/carers to not enter classrooms and to drop off and pick up children in safe locations, outside the school gates or as arranged by the teacher. Thank you for your assistance in helping to keep everyone safe.

Hygiene Measures

We will continue to implement consistent hygiene measures to keep our students and staff safe. The following hygiene procedures are in place at school.

  • regular handwashing and hand sanitising, particularly before and after eating, and after going to the toilet
  • encouraging students and staff to cough or sneeze into their elbow
  • increased cleaning of school classrooms, particularly high frequency touch points including water fountains or bubblers
  • regular cleaning of play equipment and materials
  • individual water bottles for personal use

Kind Regards,

James Watt - Principal

JAPANESE CORNER

Welcome to Term Three everyone.

How exciting!!! There are only a few more sleeps until one of the world's largest sporting events kicks off (Yes, even bigger than Jones Hill State School Sports Day) the Tokyo 2020 (2021?) Olympics!!!!! One of the beauties of this particular Olympics is that because Japan is only one hour behind Queensland, most sporting events will be on at a reasonable hour.

It is interesting to note that in Japanese, Australia actually starts with the letter O, so when the athletes march out in the Opening Ceremony, Australia will be one of the middle to last countries to march out, rather than one of the first like at other Olympics.

I, like most sports lovers around the world, am very intrigued to see how an Olympics is run during a global pandemic. Even though there will be no crowds, there will still be millions of people around the world glued to their TVs, cheering the athletes of their respective countries. Of course, we will be cheering on the Aussies, but I hope that most you will find a place in your heart to cheer on the Japanese competitors as well.

Stay Japanesey

PREMIER’S READING CHALLENGE

The challenge is still on, let’s keep reading! Our goal is for all students to complete the reading challenge and have read 20 books. The challenge finishes on 27th August 202. Over the last few years, Jones Hill State School has been on the Premier’s Reading Challenge honour list with all students completing the challenge, whether they read at home or at school. How exciting that we have read so many books. Please send in your reading log sheets as soon as they are completed.

What amazing book adventure will you being going on this week?

MATHEMATICS

This term, several year levels are learning about time. While telling the time may appear to be a relatively simple skill to learn or teach, the measurement of time is in reality much more complex. Once students start to learn all of the facets of time (digital, analogue, seconds, minutes, hours, time duration, days, months years etc.) it tends to be very confusing.

Along with knowledge of time, students need to develop an understanding of the language associated with time. For instance, 9:15 is often referred to as ‘nine fifteen’ whereas an analogue clock showing the same time is often referred to as ‘quarter past nine’. Students will need to be familiar with the language (written and spoken) to use with time.

Additionally, other mathematical knowledge which is used with time – fractions, place value with decimal places and sequencing. Teachers do a fantastic job at teaching time gradually from Prep with new skills learnt in each year level.

There are ways to help at home too. Refer to the time often, start simple with o’clock times and gradually add more difficult concepts. Use questions such as:

What time is it? What will the time be in one hour? When will bed time be? How long did it take to brush our teeth?

Parents can talk with the class teacher to find out what skills they could be focusing on at home to help students practice telling the time.

SWPBS

Students have been focused on Safety and Learning for the first two weeks of this term. Students have been reviewing how they can learn safely in different learning areas. Here are some points that they have been discussing:

  • Use equipment safely
  • Leave learning areas clean and tidy
  • Follow instructions
  • Walking
  • Give everyone some personal space
  • Cleaning up after yourself
  • Moving around the room carefully and quietly

Students have also been reviewing how to be learning while in outdoor areas. Having lessons or small group work in outdoor areas can add interest into lessons. When working outdoors, students remember that it is important to follow the instructions that have been given, use equipment safely and continue to focus on learning. Transitions to outdoor areas are important so other classes are not disturbed. When everyone is working together we will have a great learning environment.
