LEADERSHIP TEAM REPORT

2022 CLASSES

We are currently organising our 2022 classes. The class lists will be posted on the noticeboards under the old Admin building on Wednesday 8th December. A lot to time and thought goes into classes and we place the students based on their learning, social and emotional needs.

YEAR 3 LUTHER HEIGHTS CAMP

The year 3 classes are off on an adventure this Thursday 25th and Friday 26th November to the Luther Heights Camp. The students will be involved in activities to build team work, communication, participate in new experiences and enjoy some fun. Activities include: designing and building mini catapults, low ropes, team challenge, junior flying fox and night games. Please ensure all belongings are labelled and students are at school, under the old Admin building at 8:40am. The bus will leave Jones Hill at 9:00am.

YEAR 5 MARANATHA CAMP

The year 5 students are attending a Leadership Camp at Maranatha on Monday 29th November to Wednesday 1st December. The students will be involved Mid ropes, Tower of Tremble, Archery, Bridge Building, Challenge Trail, Raft Building, Radio Rogaining and Pool Sports. The aim of the camp is to: develop leadership and teamwork, develop a shared identity among our Year Five students before they head into their final year of primary school, develop social, emotional and physical skills, encourage calculated risk taking and lateral thinking skills, have fun and enjoy learning in an outdoor setting. Please ensure all belongings are labelled and students are transported to Maranatha Recreation Camp at Mothar Mountain by 9am. Pick is at 1:00pm on Wednesday 1st December at Maranatha.

AWARDS NIGHT

On Thursday, December 2 we will hold the School’s annual Awards Presentations. The evening will start at 6:30pm and will be held in the school hall. Our strings and instrumental ensemble will be performing on the night. Parents whose children are receiving awards will be contacted this week.

MESSAGE FOR STRINGS STUDENTS

As Miss Smith is away on leave there will be no strings lessons for the rest of the year. However, students who are performing in the ensemble at Awards Night will have rehearsals at the following times and will need to bring their instrument and music on these days.

Tuesday, November 30 at 8am – Beginning and Continuing Students
Friday, November 26 at 11:45am – Continuing Students

Students who have hired instruments from the school will need to return them to the school office no later than Friday, December 3.

SOLAR PANELS

Jones Hill School has been accepted into the National Schools Solar Program. This week solar panels are being installed on the roof of the school library. Once connected the school will receive solar rebates on our electricity bills. If you are visiting the library please be aware of the work being carried out and use caution around the barricades.

NEW STAGE PARADE

Last Friday we held our Friday parade on our recently completed outdoor stage. Students, staff and parents were very excited. The spacious three-tiered stage area will allow plenty of room for many parades and performances in the future. As a special treat to celebrate our new outdoor stage, our very own school choirs entertained us. These two choirs have a membership of 135 students (combined of students in the lower and upper school). The choirs sang partner songs called Shoo Fly and Get That Fly. Everyone was delighted with the professional entertainment. It was indeed a very special treat and we were all very proud of this wonderful performance.

Kind Regards,
James Watt - Principal

YEAR 3 MATH

This week year 3 have had some fun with fractions.

Double it – Prove it – Measure it

We took a recipe and had to double it and work out the new measurements required.

¼ of a cup of cocoa becomes ½ a cup. The children had to rename this fraction. Is it quicker to measure using the half cup or the 2 quarter cups? We discussed it and they had to prove it.

½ cup sugar becomes 1 cup of sugar when doubled. How many different ways could we measure one cup? Which one would be the best choice and why?

¾ of a cup of flour becomes 1 ½ cups of flour once the recipe is double. This required a bit of working out and even required some drawing and colouring in of quarters to help work out and understand how to get to 1 ½.

CHRISTMAS LIGHTS FUNDRAISER

As a lot of you know my husband and I have a large Christmas light display every year. This year we have some very special new lights for everyone to enjoy. Our light display will run from December 1 to December 25. Lights will be switched on between 7pm and 9pm Sunday to Thursday and 7pm and 10pm Friday and Saturday.

We welcome everyone to drop in and view the lights. Please feel free to get out of the car for a closer look. Cold drinks and Zooper Doopers will be on sale and on Friday November 17, sausages on bread will also be available. For $1 you will also be able to take a guess on how many light bulbs make up the zig zag pattern on the side of our house. Funds raised from these sales, or from donations placed in our wishing well, will all be donated to the Queensland Cancer Council. We hope to see many familiar faces and hope our display brings a bit of Christmas cheer into many lives.

Social Distancing Restrictions

Although students are able to be near each other in classrooms, we are still under the direction from Qld Health to adhere to social distancing rules for adults. Therefore, we are restricting adult contact in school, by asking parents/carers to not enter classrooms and to drop off and pick up children in safe locations, outside the school gates or as arranged by the teacher. Thank you for your assistance in helping to keep everyone safe.

Hygiene Measures

We will continue to implement consistent hygiene measures to keep our students and staff safe. The following hygiene procedures are in place at school.

  • regular handwashing and hand sanitising, particularly before and after eating, and after going to the toilet
  • encouraging students and staff to cough or sneeze into their elbow
  • increased cleaning of school classrooms, particularly high frequency touch points including water fountains or bubblers
  • regular cleaning of play equipment and materials
  • individual water bottles for personal use
