NAPLAN ONLINE

NAPLAN is used by governments, education authorities and schools to determine whether young Australians are meeting important goals in literacy and numeracy.

All students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 are expected to sit the NAPLAN tests, which are held in May each year.

NAPLAN gives a snapshot of how children are performing in reading, writing, spelling, punctuation, grammar, and numeracy. It complements other effective classroom assessment and reporting practices.

Online testing

In 2020, federal, state and territory education ministers agreed that all schools will transition to delivering NAPLAN online by 2022.

Benefits of online testing include:

  • 'tailored testing', which gives students questions better suited to their ability, resulting in more precise results
  • improving student engagement through computer-based tests.

2022 Test dates

NAPLAN testing window — 10–20 May 2022.

For information regarding the NAPLAN testing timetable, contact your child’s school or visit ACARA’s NAPLAN test timetables website.

Test times and materials

This document summarises the session time of each test and lists the materials allowed.

https://www.qcaa.qld.edu.au/downloads/p_10/naplan_online_test_times.pdf

Format of the tests

For all eligible year levels (Years 3, 5, 7 and 9) there are 4 test domains: writing, reading, conventions of language and numeracy. Below is a summary of the format for each test.

  • Writing: Students are given a stimulus and asked to construct a response to the task. Their response will be based on a particular text type (narrative or persuasive). Students in Years 3 and 5 will receive different writing stimuli to students in Years 7 and 9, both of the same genre. All Year 3 students sit the writing test on paper.
  • Reading: Students are given a range of texts to read. They respond to the test items using a range of response types such as multiple choice, hotspot and drag and drop items.
  • Conventions of language: Students will respond to grammar and punctuation as well as spelling items. The response formats will be multiple choice, short response and other interactive response types such as hotspot and drag and drop items.
  • Numeracy: Students will respond to numeracy items. The response formats will be multiple choice, short response and other interactive response types such as hotspot and drag and drop items. Students will also have access to online numeracy tools (ruler, protractor or calculator), depending on their year level. For Years 7 and 9, the numeracy test includes a non-calculator section and a calculator-allowed section.

SCHOOL WIDE POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR SUPPORT

At Jones Hill State School we explicitly teach our learners the behaviours we expect in all areas of our school.

In week 9, our behaviour learning focus will be addressing the behaviour we expect to see during our weekly parades. Children will be discussing the following expectations:

  • Quiet and orderly transition to enter and exit the hall.
  • Respect is shown by sitting quietly, not moving or talking during parade.
  • Following instructions given by teachers and school leaders.
  • Respectfully applauding when appropriate.
  • Singing the National Anthem respectfully, hands by your side and facing the front.

Our children at Jones Hill do a great job when attending our parades which is a fantastic reflection of their behaviour in a community setting. We are very proud of them.

In week 10, our focus will be around our school expectations on arrival before school and after school. Where appropriate, we encourage students to be at school from 8.30am. Before this time, it is the expectation that learners come to the designated undercover areas and be seated until the 8.30am bell. This week in classrooms, students will be reminded of the following expectations:

  • All students are to remain in designated areas until bell goes – they should not be roaming the school.
  • Enter classrooms only when teacher is present – students are able to check in at their classroom from 8.30am.
  • Play safely in correct areas
  • Follow correct routines before and after school
  • Use problem solving skills
  • Play safely and follow the rules
  • Respect school routines before and after school
  • Use respectful language with adults and peers
  • Act responsibly when travelling to and from school
  • Cooperate with adults and peers

These rules are in place to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our school community. Please engage in discussion with your child about where they go and what they do. If you are ever unsure, please see your classroom teacher and they can reassure you of the correct routine.

P&C NEWS

NAPLAN

Students in year 3 and 5 have been busy preparing for NAPLAN online. Students have been learning the tools in the NAPLAN online platform and practising the keyboard and mouse skills associated with answering the different types of questions. Part of our lessons has been to understand multiple choice questions and which ones we can eliminate and how to use our strategies learnt in classes to find the answers.

Have a go at these questions:

Numeracy

Year 3:

Year 5:

Language Conventions

Year 3: – the circled word is spelt incorrectly, write the correct spelling in the box.

Year 5: – there is a word spelt incorrectly in this sentence, write the correct spelling for this word in the box.

BOOK FAIR

Last week, we took our school and community on an underwater adventure … Book Fair: Dive Into Reading!

Students were lured into the Book Fair to help them get hooked on Reading. Dive Into Reading was smooth sailing throughout the week with the assistance of many people. We thank Mrs Spence and her wonderful team of staff and student leaders for looking after and floating around the Book Fair to ensure our enthusiastic readers had a swishing good time. A big thank you goes out to all those who were able to provide underwater & seaside items for our beautiful “Dive Into Reading” display, to help make our Library look swimmingly swell!

Our school and community are so generous and supportive of our Book Fairs, with the total being $4870.10. We receive approximately 30 -35% in commission, some of this is spent on books selected from Book Fair and the remaining scholastic reward points are used to purchase new or replacement of resources, throughout the year.

Thank you for supporting Book Fair through a very difficult time for so many. It has been greatly appreciated.

We had a “Guess How Many Shells I Have” competition, again to lure our best Jones Hill State School Guesstimators.
All winners received a $10 voucher to spend at the Book Fair.
Congratulations to these students and staff -
Sophia (PM), Jaylen (1S), Jada (2A), Lila (2F), Theo (2A), Bethany (3D), Stella (4B),
Xavier (5/6C), Jaymz (6R) and our Deputy Principal, Mrs Seed.

Thank you everyone, do yourself a favour today and Dive Into Reading!

MATH

Maths In 1B

During this term we have been counting to 100 and investigating two-digit numbers. We are learning addition facts for adding and taking 1 and 2, through various activities, including dice games. We are also learning ways to make ten and practising these 10 facts with games like "Ten In The Bag" and "Ten Drop".

We have had fun investigating the "chance" of events occurring and the likelihood that something will, won't or might happen.

Yours in learning,
Mrs Beyer and 1B
