Welcome Back to Term 2

Welcome back to term 2.

ANZAC DAY

School Parade

This Thursday, April 21 we will hold a special ANZAC Parade at our outside stage area. Parents are invited to join us for our Commemorative Service starting at 9am.

Dawn Service

Gympie’s Commemorative Dawn Service will be held Monday, April 25 at 5am at the Memorial Lane Cenotaph, Reef Street. Staff and students attending will be meeting in front of the Gympie RSL in Mary Street at 4:30am. Parents are welcome to join us. Just before 5am the students will march from Mary Street to the Memorial Gates for the Dawn Service. Students are asked to wear full school uniform and leadership badges, if they have one. Students can be collected from Reef Street near the bus stop at the conclusion of the service.

ANZAC Day March

Our school will be participating in the ANZAC Day parade on Monday, April 25. Parents and students are invited to participate to show their respect and to commemorate this special occasion. We will be meeting at 9am in front of the Good Price Pharmacy Warehouse. We will then march at 9:30am down Mary Street, past the Memorial Gates and around to Memorial Park (Reef Street).

Students are asked to wear full school uniform, hat and if they wish a poppy. Children can be collected from Reef Street in Memorial Park at the conclusion of the march.

NAPLAN ONLINE

NAPLAN is used by governments, education authorities and schools to determine whether young Australians are meeting important goals in literacy and numeracy.

All students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 are expected to sit the NAPLAN tests, which are held in May each year.

NAPLAN gives a snapshot of how children are performing in reading, writing, spelling, punctuation, grammar, and numeracy. It complements other effective classroom assessment and reporting practices.

Online testing

In 2020, federal, state and territory education ministers agreed that all schools will transition to delivering NAPLAN online by 2022.

Benefits of online testing include:

  • 'tailored testing', which gives students questions better suited to their ability, resulting in more precise results
  • improving student engagement through computer-based tests.

2022 Test dates

NAPLAN testing window — 10–20 May 2022.

For information regarding the NAPLAN testing timetable, contact your child’s school or visit ACARA’s NAPLAN test timetables website.

Test times and materials

This document summarises the session time of each test and lists the materials allowed.

Format of the tests

For all eligible year levels (Years 3, 5, 7 and 9) there are 4 test domains: writing, reading, conventions of language and numeracy. Below is a summary of the format for each test.

  • Writing: Students are given a stimulus and asked to construct a response to the task. Their response will be based on a particular text type (narrative or persuasive). Students in Years 3 and 5 will receive different writing stimuli to students in Years 7 and 9, both of the same genre. All Year 3 students sit the writing test on paper.
  • Reading: Students are given a range of texts to read. They respond to the test items using a range of response types such as multiple choice, hotspot and drag and drop items.
  • Conventions of language: Students will respond to grammar and punctuation as well as spelling items. The response formats will be multiple choice, short response and other interactive response types such as hotspot and drag and drop items.
  • Numeracy: Students will respond to numeracy items. The response formats will be multiple choice, short response and other interactive response types such as hotspot and drag and drop items. Students will also have access to online numeracy tools (ruler, protractor or calculator), depending on their year level. For Years 7 and 9, the numeracy test includes a non-calculator section and a calculator-allowed section.

MATH

Maths in 2A & 2F

2A & 2F have been quite busy over this past term learning lots of new things to add to their mathematician hats.

This term we have

  • counted to 100 in 1’s, 2’s, 3’s, 5’s and 10’s.
  • looked at number patterns and learnt how to work out the missing numbers.
  • represented and explored 3-digit numbers
  • represented data in picture graphs
  • added strings of numbers together
  • worked out missing numbers in magic squares
  • practiced our number facts (including rainbow and doubles)
  • looked at the value of Australian coins

And of course, we’ve had lots of fun along the way learning.

2F have played games such as roll 2, doubles dash and number string safari have helped us practice these concepts. We also had a go at singing the rainbow and doubles fact song.

2A have also played games such as double trouble bingo, rainbow facts, addition mix up and let’s go shopping. We also identified our Australian coins, ordered them from least to most and determined which set of coins was worth the most.
