Year 6 into 7 Parent Information Session
James Nash and Gympie High School will be holding an information session for parents of children currently in year 6 on Thursday, June 2 from 5:30pm to 6:30pm. This session will be held in the Jones Hill Year 6 rooms, top floor of F Block. You will receive information regarding the transition process from Primary to High School. Jones Hill Sports Day
Jones Hill Sports Day will be held on the last day of term 2, Friday, June 24. The students are busy practising their running, throwing and jumping skills in preparation for a fun-filled day of competition and doing their best. Parents are welcome to attend this event. Students will need to wear their coloured shirt for Sports Day – Doran is yellow, McPaul is blue and Radford is red. Long distance races will be held on Wednesday, June 22.
Peer Skills: Helping Young People To Help Others
It is often said that while many young people share their problems with their parents, often they turn first to their peers when troubled.
In recognition of this, selected Senior students at Jones Hill State School will be receiving training to support and help their friends through Peer Skills - a Uniting Care Lifeline program. The program will be run by Sensei (Sonny Pellinkhof) and Mrs Munn at Jones Hill State School.
The two-day workshop, planning to be held June 9th and 10th, week 8 of this term, will train students in support skills, help seeking, communication and problem-solving strategies in a bid to prevent everyday problems escalating to more serious mental health issues.
Jones Hill State School would like to thank the People at Uniting Care Lifeline program for the opportunity to present this workshop.
REPORT CARD
Report Cards will be emailed home in Week 1, Term 3.
This is to allow teachers more time to complete units of work and assessments, due to Term 1 interruptions.
Kind Regards,
James Watt - Principal
Stacey Seed – Deputy Principal

Due to this change there was a small rise in price for our accommodation of $40. Invoices for this will be sent home today.
A parent meeting will be held next term. Please don’t hesitate to contact the school office if you have any questions on 54890555.

PREMIER’S READING CHALLENGE
The Premier's Reading Challenge has begun. The PRC is not a competition but a way to encourage students to develop a love of reading for life. Students are encouraged to select a range of fiction and non-fiction books suited to their reading ability and record books read during the reading period, between 9 May to 26 August. Teachers will be handing out reading record forms for students to complete.
Over the last few years, we have had great success with having every student at Jones Hill State School complete the challenge and our school has an honourable mention on the PRC website.
To complete the challenge:
- Prep to Year 2 must read or experience at least 20 books
- Years 3 and 4 must read at least 20 books
- Years 5 to 9 must read at least 15 books.
Class teachers will receive a reading record form for each student to complete. Prep and year 1 teachers can choose whether to complete a whole class form or individual forms.
Students can record books read at home, in home reading, guided reading groups, class reading, library books and books that are read to them or that they listen to.
We encourage all students to complete the challenge. Please send completed forms to the school office.
Every student who completes the challenge will receive a Certificate of Achievement signed by the Premier. I look forward to seeing as many of our students as possible take part in the 2022 Premier’s Reading Challenge.
MATH
Maths Madness in Year 5
Our Year 5PD students have already covered a range of topics in maths this term. They have been working hard on building a range of mental multiplication and division strategies. So far they have developed their capabilities in using the split strategy, the compensate strategy and the area model. These are tough concepts drawing on a deep knowledge of place value and automaticity of number facts so well done to our students for tackling these concepts.
5PD students have also been learning about fractions and decimal numbers. We cut up a cake and found the more people we had to share and divide the cake with, the smaller our pieces of cake got. This helped students understand the relationship between the denominator and the size of the fractions allowing us to order and compare fractions. We also practised adding and subtracting fractions and found equivalent fractions using coloured water and baking cups. The class enjoyed combining some kinaesthetic learning in their Maths lesson on ordering, representing and reading decimal numbers. The class was split into six groups and each group was timed doing four yoga poses. After each group had their turn we recorded the time to the hundredth of the second and then ordered them on a number line. We also practised how to convert numbers written in decimal representation to fractional representation.
We are now learning about reflectional and rotational symmetry. Students have enjoyed the opportunity to use the iPads to photograph symmetry they found in our school grounds and to create rotational symmetrical patterns and designs.
There’s never a dull moment in Maths in year 5 and we are very proud of the all of the effort our students apply to their maths learning.
