STUDENT RESOURCE SCHEME

Invoices for the 2023 SRS will be generated this week. If you have outstanding SRS fees from 2022, you will not be eligible to join the scheme in 2023 until your fees are paid.

Jones Hill School operates a Student Resource Scheme (SRS) to:

  • Minimise the costs to parents/carers of providing textbooks and other learning resources for their child/ren, by securing discounts, through early payment and bulk ordering.
  • Ensure that an adequate bank of resources is available to guarantee a good quality education for all students.
  • The cost per child is $120 and has been this amount since the program started 5 years ago. The majority of parents utilise the SRS.
  • The scheme does not provide any funds for the Parents' and Citizens' Association, is entirely voluntary and parents/carers are under no obligation to join.
  • The SRS operates under the policies and guidelines of the Department of Education. A parent who does not wish to join the scheme is responsible for providing the student with the items that would otherwise have been provided to the student by the scheme as detailed on the year level subject requirements list, to enable the student to engage with the curriculum.
  • Parents wishing to take advantage of the services provided by the SRS sign the relevant form agreeing to the conditions therein upon enrolment and then pay the annual SRS participation fee. The SRS provides the entire package for the specified participation fee and is not available in part.

A parent's participation or non-participation in the scheme will continue as per their previously completed Participation Agreement Form. A parent can opt in or out of the scheme in subsequent years by completing another “Participation Agreement Form".

MATH

In Mathematics, Prep M have been using number to represent quantities up to 20 and beyond. We make quantities by using many varied materials such as counters, teddies, paddle pop sticks, farm animals, rubber bugs, pom poms, sticks, leaves and other items which can be manipulated through ‘hands on’ investigations.

We gain understanding by connecting number names, numerals and quantities. Our fluency is built through counting numbers in sequence and continuing patterns. We use problem solving when we use familiar counting sequences to solve unfamiliar problems and discuss the reasonableness of our answers with our friends. We use reasoning when we explain our solutions to our team members. And most important of all, we have fun while we learn new mathematical skills and grow our understanding of numbers together!

WRITING COMPETITION

One of our year 5 students, Indy recently took part in a Writing competition. She wrote a very moving poem called The Outback. Indy was in the top 5% and received an Excellence in Writing certificate. Congratulations Indy. Below is the poem she wrote.

PEER SKILLS

In the coming weeks, ten of our Year 5 students at Jones Hill State School will be chosen to participate in a Uniting Care/Lifeline 2-day Peer Skills Workshop facilitated by staff of the school. These students will be selected from the current Year 5 cohort.

Peer Skills is based on research that suggests that while many young people share their problems with their parents, often they turn first to their peers and friends. Research supports the idea that young people view their peers as an approachable and credible source of support, and that young people can successfully help each other. Help seeking and help giving skills are also significantly increased through training.

The workshop will aim to provide our students with the confidence and skills they need to respond in the best possible way when a friend turns to them with a concern and/or problem.

The students will be supported by Mr Sonny Pellinkhof (Sensei) and we look forward to building on our positive and supportive school environment.

BOOK FAIR

We wish to say a huge thank you to everyone involved for supporting our School Library’s Book Fair, “Paws for Books.”

It was so much fun, having so many visit our Book Fair to ‘paws’, read through a great ‘tail’ or two and select some great buys.

Every book or product you bought from our Book Fair, earned free books for our School Library!

We are now lucky enough to be able to buy approximately $2000 worth of new books and valuable resources for your School Library … again, thank you!

Our “Guess How Many Dog Bone Biscuits” in the jar competition was very popular. Each winner received a $10 voucher to spend at the Book Fair. Great guessing from our winners.

P- 2 jar had 16 biscuits. Winners were: William B, Khai (PM); Ferris, Carter, Jack (1B); Fleur Bella (1D); Stanley (1S) & Theo (2A).

3-6 jar had 40 biscuits. Winners were Sunny (4/5C); Zac (5PD); Charlee (5PD) & Mrs Delisser.
