ACARA NAPLAN Trial – Testing Questions
Jones Hill SS has been selected by the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) to participate in this year’s Item Trial. The purpose of the Item Trial is to evaluate potential NAPLAN test questions (‘items’) for use in future NAPLAN tests. ACARA appreciates the participation of your child in the Item Trial.
Your child’s involvement and the results from the trial will help ACARA ensure that NAPLAN tests are valid, reliable and fair for all students. About the Item Trial • The Item Trial is being held in approximately 400 schools across Australia between Monday 19 May and Friday 13 June 2025.
- Schools are carefully selected to ensure that a range of student backgrounds and abilities is represented.
- The Item Trial is about testing the questions, not about testing your child or their ability. Your child’s results are not reported.
- Your child will sit two Item Trial tests. These will be, for example, a Reading and a Numeracy test, a Reading and a Conventions of language (spelling, grammar and punctuation) test, or two Writing tests. • The tests will be administered at the school by external invigilators. As the tests are online, your child will use the device that they use for everyday classroom activities, such as a computer, a laptop or a tablet.
- All selected students are expected to participate in the Item Trial unless they have been exempted or withdrawn from NAPLAN tests. If you have questions about your child’s participation, please raise these with your school.
Further information about NAPLAN is available at www.nap.edu.au
To read the ACARA Item Trial privacy notice, please visit www.nap.edu.au/naplan/privacy

2025 PREMIER’S READING CHALLENGE
We are delighted to invite all JHSS students to join in the 2025 Premier’s Reading Challenge (PRC).
The PRC is not a competition but a way to encourage students to develop a love of reading for life. Students are encouraged to select a range of fiction and non-fiction books suited to their reading ability and record books read during the reading period, from 6 May to 22 August.
To complete the challenge:
- Prep to Year 6 must read or experience at least 20 books
Experiencing books can include shared reading, listening to stories, or reading picture books. The aim for the 2025 challenge is to encourage students to make time to read. Last year saw more than 216,000 children from around the state participate.
Book suggestions are available on the PRC website:
Every student who completes the challenge, and returns the completed record reader form, will receive a Certificate of Achievement. We look forward to seeing as many of our students as possible take part in the 2025 Premier’s Reading Challenge.

HERITAGE FAIR
We are thrilled to announce that the Mary Valley Rattler is a proud supporter of the upcoming Gympie Rotary Heritage Makers Fair, taking place on July 5–6, 2025, at the Gympie Showgrounds. This biennial event celebrates traditional craftsmanship and offers a unique, educational experience for students.
We kindly request your assistance in promoting this enriching event through your school's newsletter. Admission is free for children under 15 when accompanied by an adult.
Why the Heritage Makers Fair is Great for Kids:
- Interactive Learning: Students can engage with over 70 artisans demonstrating heritage trades such as blacksmithing, woodworking, and weaving, providing a tangible connection to history.
- Creative Exploration: The "Mini Makers" program offers hands-on activities, allowing children to create and understand traditional crafts, fostering creativity and fine motor skills.
- Cultural Appreciation: Exhibits like the quilting showcase and yarnbombing displays introduce students to diverse artistic expressions and the importance of preserving cultural heritage.
- Historical Context: The event provides insights into the tools and techniques of the past, enhancing students' understanding of historical lifestyles and technologies.
For more information, please visit makersfair.au
Thank you for supporting educational opportunities that connect our students with history and craftsmanship.
