LEADERSHIP TEAM REPORT
Hi Everyone,
ROAD SAFETY
Keeping our kids safe as they get to and from school is everyone’s responsibility. As children come to and from school it is important for drivers and pedestrians to be aware and take extra care during these busy times. Please help keep our students safe by driving to conditions, the signed speed limit and by parking in designated car spaces. Those who park on yellow lines, in the bus turn around area and do U-turns on our school crossings are putting our children in danger.
ADOPT A COP
We are happy to announce the Jones Hill School Adopt a Cops for 2018 remain Senior Constable Reegan Cunningham and Senior Constable Michelle De Pellegrin. We look forward to having them visit us on special days and helping support our students during the year.
COLES SPORTS FOR SCHOOLS
Coles Sports for Schools has begun. If you shop at Coles please don’t forget to collect your vouchers and place them in the blue box at our school office. Ask your friends and family to collect them too. The more vouchers we collect the more free sports equipment we receive for our students to enjoy.

These promotions continue to provide valuable resources for the benefit of all students with the great response from last year’s Woolworths Earn and Learn program we have purchased reading books, dice, math resources, class sets of mini white boards and erasers and much more.
LEM PHONICS NEWS
Spelling rules answer the question, "What phonogram do I need to use to say that particular sound?" For example, “Should the word ‘clown’ be spelled with a ‘c’ or a ‘k’?
- LEM Rule: usually use ‘c’ for the /k/ sound before ‘a’, ‘o’, ‘u’ or a consonant.
Yours truly, child will also learn specific syllable rules giving them the tools to confidently break any word into its parts. Syllabication is an essential skill to successfully decode (read) and encode (spell) unfamiliar words.
Children in Years 1 to 6, have already learnt the following rules:
Rule for Week 2: Vowels usually say their first sound when followed by a consonant in the same syllable. For example, can, step, trip, flop, fun.
Rule for Week 3: Vowels usually say their second sound at the end of a syllable. For example, pa·per, si·lent, be·lieve, mo·tor, mu·sic
The rules that your child will be learning this week and next week are:
Rule for Week 4: Usually use ‘c’ for the /k/ sound if followed by ‘a’, ‘o’, ‘u’ or a consonant. For example, catch, cook, cutlery, cloud.
Rule for Week 5: Usually use ‘k’ for the /k/ sound if followed by ‘e’, ‘i’ or ‘y’. For example, kettle, kitten, Kylie.
Exercise: Use the above rules to write down the correct phonogram ‘c’ or ‘k’ to represent the /k/ sound in the following words:
___itchen |
___amera |
___onfidence |
___idney |
___riminal |
___elpie |
___autious |
___indred |
___ustomer |
Every week, your child will bring home spelling words to practise and reinforce the rule that they are learning in class. Your child may be asked to ‘code’ the words. LEM Phonics uses explanation marks to assist your child in applying what they’ve learnt through analytical thinking. If you would like to learn more about explanation marks, please don’t hesitate to ask your child’s teacher. If you would like more information about the LEM Phonics programme and how it can help your child to be a successful reader and speller, please attend the Parents LEM Phonics session Tuesday 27th February—5:00—6:00pm in the Library.
PLEASE BE NUT AWARE
We would like to remind Prep Parents to be aware that we have students in Prep that may have an anaphylactic reaction caused by exposure to certain foods. We strongly encourage you to pack food items that do not contain nuts (especially peanut butter sandwiches).
To minimise the risk of exposure, every person entering the Prep classrooms will be required to wash their hands.

YOU CAN DO IT NEWS
Parade Performance
PARENTS OF PREP, YRS 1 &2: We'd love you to join us for a short performance at this Friday's parade 9am. The children will sing a song that reminds them that plant growth is similar to how we can grow strong in character and learning...what "nutrients" (attitudes & skills) do we need in our "soil" (character) to grow well at school and at home?
"MAN-BAND", a performance group for boys in years 4-6, has begun rehearsing on Thursdays 2nd Break in the Library. We will be practising "Limbo Rock" and an item from "Pirates of Penzance" (wooden swords and eye-patches supplied!). An information letter for the boys who have already signed-up will be sent home tomorrow. Talk to your son to see if he might be interested: there is still room for some more stout-hearted "men"!

MEET OUR STAFF
SONIA BLAKE
I was born in Proserpine but grew up in the outback mining town of Mt Isa which was a wonderful place to spend my childhood. After graduating from Teachers Training College in Brisbane I taught in far north and western Queensland for three years. My husband and I moved to Gympie in 1990 to a Macadamia farm at Dagun where we raised our three lovely children. Whilst at Dagun, I taught at Amamoor, Imbil and Monkland. In 2011 we moved to Gympie and I transferred to Jones Hill State School where I have loved being ever since.
My niece and I at Mt Isa
I am a real ‘homebody’ at heart and love to spend time with my family including my extended family of two sisters and a brother and four nieces and nephews. We are a close bunch! I enjoy reading, swimming at the beach, yoga and gardening. I am also a little bit of a ‘crazy cat lady’ with two cats whom I adore and one small cockatiel. My obsession is travel and I never stop dreaming of the next holiday destination with my family. Finally, my passion is teaching and my 28 years working for Education Queensland have been incredibly busy and rewarding. Thanks for the opportunity to tell a little about myself.

EMMA MILLERS
My name is Mrs Emma Millers and I am teaching 4ML this year on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays. I am really enjoying the atmosphere at Jones Hill State School and am excited to enter my second year here. My family and I moved back to Gympie last year from Emerald where I taught for 3 years. Prior to Emerald, I have also taught at Maleny State School, where I first started out.
On a more personal level, I have two small children under 3. We enjoy visiting all the lovely beaches around us and picnics in the park. We are lucky enough to have made this our home where we are surrounded by our family.
BEFORE AND AFTERSCHOOL CARE
Camp Australia will be again running before and after school care in our hall. For more information please see our office staff.
